Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Today's Army has gone through some incredible transformations since the end of the Cold War. Since then, the Army has struggled with Force XXI concepts, and more recently, the concept of the "Prototype Brigade." This monograph examines other periods of transformation to determine whether any of the lessons learned can be applied to current force structure changes. Specifically, the monograph conducts an in-depth study of the 11th Air Assault Division (Test) from 1963-1965, when the Army conducted extensive experimentation with airmobility and helicopter operations. The monograph begins its study with an examination of a framework for analysis. Using the US Army Training and Doctrine Command's "domains" of Doctrine, Training, Leadership, Organization, Material, and Soldier Systems (DTLOMS), the monograph first proves that this is a valid methodology for analyzing change. It does this by showing that all "revolutions in military affairs (RMA)" have occurred when the DTLOMS all converge to provide a synergy to each other. Once the framework of DTLOMS is shown to be valid, the monograph applies the framework to the transformation of the US Army to airmobility in the early 1960's. The conclusions that the author reaches is that for change to be lasting in the US Army, there must be the impetus for change provided by the Army leadership. The US Army Tactical Mobility Requirements Board, commonly referred to as the Howze Board provided this impetus in the early 1960's and produced a lasting change that is still manifested within the current US Army force structure. It takes this type of leadership in order to make changes to a historically conservative organization, such as the US Army. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The United States is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and has considered the Alliance an integral component of U.S. defense strategy for over sixty years. At the height of the Cold War, a third of the entire U.S. Army postured in Germany in support of NATO and the defense of Europe. Additionally, before the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. Army officers routinely spent large portions of their careers in Europe training and serving with Alliance partners. The U.S. Army's officer professional development model reinforced this culture by focusing officer education on coalition and alliance operations, as well as providing officers with numerous overseas assignments. This methodology suffered when Europe's existential threat disappeared and U.S. focus shifted to the defeat of terrorism, but is making a significant resurgence because of ongoing overseas contingency operations. Senior leaders have realized that in a resource constrained environment, unilateral operations are less likely, and that military officers must possess the skills necessary to work and serve in complex multinational organizations. This monograph asserts that an officer professional development model that emphasizes postgraduate education and broadening assignments best prepares officers for service in multinational organizations. Beginning with a comprehensive literature review, this monograph examines existing work to show that it primarily focuses on officer development for service in the U.S. joint arena or for service as strategic leaders and not so much for service in multinational organizations. A brief synopsis of the history of officer professional development, beginning with the developments that occurred following the Spanish American War and concluding with the official Army boards that followed World War II, establishes the ever-changing environment that is U.S. officer development. This is an important section because it establishes a baseline under Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A study of General Walton H. Walker's career offers a lens through which to view the evolution of Army training doctrine, revealing its strengths and weaknesses over a period of nearly four decades. However, an understanding of the skills necessary to train units for combat cannot consist solely of a review of training doctrine. General Walker's career provides valuable insights into the real-world challenges a leader experienced training an Army unit, both in war and in peacetime. The resource constraints, political realities, and physical hardships that make Army training so difficult to accomplish with skill and foresight cannot be gleaned from classroom lectures or the pages of a journal or doctrinal publication. Further, an analysis of the breakout and pursuit Walker's XX Corps executed in Normandy, and later the performance of the Eighth Army during the first weeks of combat in Korea, reveal how General Walker applied contemporary training principles to develop combat formations that performed exceptionally well in combat. Finally, a review of current training principles demonstrates that Walker emphasized the same principles throughout his career that retain primacy in today's Army. This reveals Walker's lasting legacy: in addition to performing among the best of the Army's commanders in combat, Walker set himself apart as one of the leading trainers in U.S. Army history. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Jane Fonda visited North Vietnam in July 1972. Her actions during that infamous visit earned her the title "Hanoi Jane". Many feel she betrayed American troops and the United States; Vietnam veterans still despise the woman after nearly forty years. A factual historical account of her actions, words, and political alliances while in Hanoi provides insight to the strong emotional reactions that continue unabated. Her actions also exemplified the sometimes-narrow line between antiwar ideology and betrayal. Moreover, despite her stated intentions that she simply was an antiwar activist promoting peace, the ongoing debate continues if she committed treason by providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Her messages broadcast over the communist propagandist Radio Hanoi changed how the American troops perceived the political will of the United States from the beginning of the war to its latter stages. Fonda's words to the American POWs and servicemen embodied the inextricable connection between public support from the home front and the war effort overseas. Her statements against American prisoners-of-war and active pilots were so devastating that the North Vietnamese used them as a propaganda tool to deflate the morale of the American troops. The iniquitous legend of "Hanoi Jane" continues because Jane Fonda caused irreparable emotional damage to Vietnam veterans. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The concern over the infantry squad's effectiveness in the recent past has focused almost exclusively on its size. Critics argue that the current US Army infantry squads, both light and mechanized, are too small to accomplish their mission (particularly the mechanized squad). While it may be true that the squads' current nine man strength can not sustain as much attrition as the former eleven man squad, size is not the key issue in the squad's effectiveness. Historical analysis of the infantry squad since World War II would suggest that the US Army's current squad's primary shortcoming lies in its organization rather than its size. As such, it is possible to make the current squads more effective without increasing its size. This fact is significant since present personnel limitations at the Department of the Army level preclude increasing the squad's size. Based on data from both combat experience and peacetime testing, the author suggests that eliminating one of the squad's two M249 Squad Automatic Weapons, and M203 Grenade Launchers, would improve the nine man squad's overall effectiveness. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. For the major part of its history Australia's national defence policy has relied upon alliances with major world powers to ensure its security. The Nixon Doctrine and withdrawal of United Kingdom forces from East of the Suez persuaded Australia to develop a more independent strategy, which attempts to develop regional balances of power and cooperative security agreements. Australia's defence forces are required to become self reliant, but within a framework of alliances. Although contemplated throughout the 1970s, this strategy was first articulated in 1986, and was most recently reinforced through the release of the 1994 Defence White Paper "Defending Australia. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
