L. Byers) was born March 26, 1859, in Whiteside County, Illinois. He was converted among the Methodists in 1876 but later drifted from his faith. His father had been preaching among a group known as the River Brethren when, in the early 1880's, he subscribed to The Gospel Trumpet paper. In the meantime, Jacob had recommitted his life to Christ, married Jennie M. Shirk, and had also begun preaching in the River Brethren church. In 1884 Jacob claimed the experience of sanctification. In 1888, the Byers family met D. S. Warner and his company of singers, which forever changed their lives.They did not hesitate to take their stand with the reformation movement and the truths D. S. Warner was preaching. Although J. W. Byers wrote few songs, he did much writing for The Gospel Trumpet and authored a few books. One of the chief burdens of his ministry was the good news that Jesus still heals! He wrote the words of Evening Light Songs #407, 'He Is Just the Same Today,' which were set to music by his younger brother, Andrew. In 1896, Jacob and his wife, Jennie, moved to Oakland, California, where they opened a healing home mission and published a magazine called Tidings of Healing. J. W. Byers also did some excellent writings on the subject of 'sanctification' and authored the words of Evening Light Songs #297, 'Come Over Into Canaan,' which were also set to music by Andrew, his brother. J. W. Byers departed this life October 16, 1944, at the age of 85. His burial was in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. On his tombstone are written the words, 'I have fought a good fight.'Jennie M. (Shirk) Byers was born June 13, 1861 in Carrol County, Illinois. She departed this life on January 24, 1950, at the age of 88. She is buried beside her husband in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. On her tombstone are inscribed the words, 'The Lord Is My Shepherd.'.…

The student asks questions such as: Why do love and suffering exist side by side How far are heaven and hell from each other Are their men and women in heaven The mystics answers them by giving answers such as: love must have an object, therefore it exists side by side with suffering; heaven and hell are everywhere but their relationship is like day and night; there are no men and women in heaven but everyone is of the same sex.The answers are based on Scriptures. Where Scriptures do no provide a clear answer, the mystic does something that one may not have expected a mystic to do: he reasons by using metaphysical concepts, such as form and matter (not time and space), and quasi-metaphysical metaphorical ones, such as dark and light. He does not quote authorities (no namedropping!). Instead, he reduces metaphysics to these simple key concepts that he has distilled from his readings and study. Neither does the mystic appeal to his own supernatural experiences, even though the title of the book may have given the reader that impression. No, he did not ascend to heaven, neither in body nor in spirit, like his Swedish counterpart Emmanuel Swedenborg.There is a heavy emphasis on reasoning while experience is almost completely absent. The very beautiful Aztec and the Inca poetry belong to the earlier and more highly developed civilizations. Neuware - The work of Ambrose Bierce could sometimes be as mysterious as the author himself, who disappeared at age 71 possibly on a tour of Mexico, and his ultimate fate has been one of the great unsolved mysteries of the literary world. How fitting that the end of his life should mimic that of his characters in this stunning 1893 collection of horror shorts.'Can Such Things Be' consists of 24 stories with the running theme of mysterious deaths or disappearances, with a few exceptions of course. A Union officer is found hacked to death after having evidently tussled with a Confederate soldier already long since dead. While on a moonlight walk, a man loses his father who is never seen again. A man who has a fear of consulting his pocketwatch at the hour of 11 o'clock drops dead when he accidentally does so. A drifter in Napa Valley settles down in a random churchyard but is later found dead by law enforcement near the tomb of his mother. And so on.There are a few random stories that don't fit the theme but still contain supernatural elements, such as a fairy-tale about a boy who receives three fleeting visits by the fickle embodiment of Happiness. One of these could essentially be classified as science fiction, about a man who invents a robot (here called an automaton) with artificial intelligence, but it's a sore loser at chess.Also included in this collection is the famous story 'The Damned Thing,' which every lover of horror should read at least once.These stories certainly position Bierce as one of the progenitors of weird fiction. Many of these works have a distinct rural Americana vibe, and he does a great job of capturing the primal psychological awe of what lurks in the woods. He is a satirist so though his stories all have a serious tone, the prose is spiced with whimsy. Bierce is notorious for his 'sting' endings, which are mostly effective, but sometimes seem a bit contrived and overly confusing. There were times when I finished a story and had no idea what just happened.The likes of M.R. James, H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Gertrude Atherton, Oliver Onions, and others would also take up this style. So if you are a fan of the work of these writers and have not read Bierce, I can only ask 'Can such things be ' (Warren Fournier).…

Their joint pen-name, derived from their middle names (Philip and Mark), was coined soon after their original meeting, at a science-fiction convention. Both men were drunk at the time, which explains a good deal, and only one ever sobered up. A matter for constant contention between the collaborators was which one. They collaborated for some years, and devised an interesting method of work: Mr. Garrett handled the verbs, the adverbs and the interjections, Mr. Jenifer the nouns, pronouns, and adjectives. Conjunctions are a matter of joint decision, and in the case of a tie, the entire game was replayed at Fen way Park, Boston, the following year. Regardless of who wrote what, Brain Twister is a highly enjoyable novel about spies and telepathy, as only two great writers could have conceived it.…
