This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The TGF-13 superfamily is a large and expanding multigene family which in verte brates includes the TGF-13 proteins themselves, the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), the growth and differentiation factors (GDF), the activins/inhi…bins (INH), Mullerian inhibitory substance (MIS), glial derived neurotropic factor (GDNF) and more recently macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC-1). They are characterised by conserved structural elements and a broad commonality of function. Major structural elements All members of the TGF-13 superfamily contain as their major structural hallmark a conserved spacing and distribution of seven cysteine residues. This structure is known as the cysteine knot and tethers together regions of the peptide as well as binding the two chains of the dimer to each other. High resolution structures are now available on proteins from three families within this group including glial derived neurotropic factor (GDNF), BMP-7 and several of the TGF-13s. Despite low similarity between some of these proteins (eg, TGF-13s and GDNF are only 13% identical) they share a strikingly similar three dimensional conformation (Fig. 1). These structural elements imbue the protein with some of its familial characteristics. These include its physico-chemical stability due to tight tethering of portions of the peptide chain via criss-crossing disulphide bonds. Much of its surfaces are coated with hydrophobic patches leading to a propensity to bind non-specifically to other proteins as well as to its self. This also causes a marked propensity for aggregation when the recombinant protein is present at high concentration. 220 pp. Englisch.

The theory of structural stability has been developed intensively over the last 25 years. This theory is now a vast domain of mathematics, having close relations to the classical qualitative theory of differential equations, to differential topology, and to the analysis on manifolds. Evidently it is impossible to present a complete and detailed account of all fundamental results of the theory during a one year course. So the purpose of the course of lectures (and also the purpose of this book) was more modest. The author was going to give an introduction to the language of the theory of structural stability, to formulate its principal results, and to introduce the students (and also the readers of the book) to some of the main methods of this theory. One can select two principal aspects of modern theory of structural stability (of course there are some conventions attached to this state ment). The first one, let us call it the 'geometric' aspect, deals mainly with the description of the picture of trajectories of a system; and the second, let us say the 'analytic' one, has in its centre the method for solving functional equations to find invariant manifolds, conjugating homeomorphisms, and so forth. 204 pp. Englisch.

There are, however, some separate topics on this su…bject covered in the mathematical literature. For instance, the elementary theory of holomorphic vector functions.and mappings on Banach spaces is presented in the monographs of E. Hille and R. Phillips [1] and L. Schwartz [1], whereas some results on Banach algebras of holomorphic functions and holomorphic operator-functions are discussed in the books of W. Rudin [1] and T. Kato [1]. Apparently, the need to study holomorphic mappings in infinite dimensional spaces arose for the first time in connection with the development of nonlinear anal ysis. A systematic study of integral equations with an analytic nonlinear part was started at the end ofthe 19th and the beginning ofthe 20th centuries by A. Liapunov, E. Schmidt, A. Nekrasov and others. Their research work was directed towards the theory of nonlinear waves and used mainly the undetermined coefficients and the majorant power series methods. The most complete presentation of these methods comes from N. Nazarov. In the forties and fifties the interest in Liapunov's and Schmidt's analytic methods diminished temporarily due to the appearence of variational calculus meth ods (M. Golomb, A. Within the small area of Bad Nauheim, Giessen and Marburg (in alphabetical order) a greater concentration of students of thenno regulation has been trained or worked or is working than probably in any other single area of Europe, if not the world. It is thus most appropriate to hold the Ninth International Symposium on the Pharmacology of Thennoregulation in Giessen, from August 7 to 12, 1994. The community of students of thennoregulation was extremely grateful that Professor Kurt Bruck and the lustus-Liebig-University of Giessen had extended this invitation. The same community was even more saddened that Kurt Bruck died on April 27, 1992 and thus could not participate in this event that had been planned to honour his achievements. As a small token of friendship and affection, the many friends of Kurt Bruck from all over the world who will participate in this event dedicate this symposium to the memory of Kurt Bruck. Another staunch friend, researcher of temperature regulation and supporter of this series of symposia died in October 1993: Professor Wilhelm Siegmund Feldberg. Die jüngste Arbeit von Bemd Heinrich, die er in seinem Buch Bumblebee Economics wunderbar zusammen gefaßt hatte, zeigte den Erfolg einer besonderen Sichtweise: Er betrachtete das Hummelvolk als ökonomische Einheit, die durch die natürliche Selektion dazu gebracht worden war, ihre Energie ressourcen effektiv zu sammeln und zu verwerten. Mich fesselte der Gedanke, diese Sichtweise auf Honigbienen anzuwenden. Weil Bienenvölker größer sind als Hummelvölker und ausgefeil tere Kommunikationssysteme besitzen, war es offensichtlich, daß sie einen noch größeren Schatz an Organisationsstrukturen für ihren Energiehaushalt besitzen müssen. Im Gegensatz zum Monitoring nach 50 - 52 des Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch (LFGB) ist der BÜp ein risikoorientiertes Überwachungsprogramm. Das heißt, dass die Auswahl der zu untersuchenden Proben und der zu kontrollierenden Betriebe gezielt auf Basis einer Risikoanalyse erfolgt. Im Rahmen des BÜp können Lebensmittel, Kosmetika und Bedarfsgegenstände untersucht werden. Die Untersuchungen von Erzeugnissen können dabei beispielsweise die folgenden Aspekte abdecken: chemische Parameter, mikrobiologische Parameter, die Anwendung bestimmter Herstellungsverfahren oder die Überprüfung von Kennzeichnungselementen. Als äußerst reizvolles Thema erschien mir… die Frage, wie der Prozeß der Nahrungsbeschaffung im Bienenvolk organisiert wird. Die jüngste Arbeit von Bemd Heinrich, die er in seinem Buch Bumblebee Economics wunderbar zusammen gefaßt hatte, zeigte den Erfolg einer besonderen Sichtweise: Er betrachtete das Hummelvolk als ökonomische Einheit, die durch die natürliche Selektion dazu gebracht worden war, ihre Energie ressourcen effektiv zu sammeln und zu verwerten. Mich fesselte der Gedanke, diese Sichtweise auf Honigbienen anzuwenden. Weil Bienenvölker größer sind als Hummelvölker und ausgefeil tere Kommunikationssysteme besitzen, war es offensichtlich, daß sie einen noch größeren Schatz an Organisationsstrukturen für ihren Energiehaushalt besitzen müssen.
