The techniques discussed are sufficient for the study of systems in the steady state, but systems that are evolving towards the steady state, or show some other time-depen dent behavior, require in addition the techniques of mathematical modelling. These are dealt with in some detail in Chapter 2, where network representation of the system is treated at length as the method of choice in carrying out appropriate simulations. Specifically, restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)… is a clinical problem without any effective drug therapy so far. Thus, there is need for an improved drug therapy but also for an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of growth control in SMC. Cyclooxygenase products, such as prostaglandins and thromboxane, are intimately involved in growth responses. Vasodilatory prostaglandins, such as PGI , PGE or their analogues, have 2 1 been shown to inhibit SMC proliferation. There is also evidence for a markedly increased endogenous prostaglandin production during neointirna formation under the influence of growth factors which includes induction of COX-2. These data suggest that prostaglandins might be considered both targets and tools of growth control. However, there are still many open questions, including the possible interaction of prostaglandins with other growth modulating factors, in particular NO, the intracellular signal transduction pathways and the role of oxidative stress. 140 pp. Englisch.

Much of this growth in the traditionally separate sciences of chemistry and molecular gerontology occurred independently, with little interaction or communi cation between the scientists working in these two fields. In view of the growing maturity of the two fields and the potential importance of advancing our knowledge in the area of oxidative stress and aging, we perceived a critical need to organize an international conference the 'First Inter national Conference on Oxidative Stress and Aging' in Hawaii in 1994 to bring together the world's leading scientists in the fields of reactive oxygen species and molecular gerontology. The objective of this conference was to provide a unique opportunity for scholars working in these two related and rapidly growing fields to participate in the exchange, integration, and synthesis of new concepts and ideas, to engage in constructive criticism and to initiate new collaborative research projects. The conference focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of aging as related to oxidative stress. It was one of the largest and most comprehensive international conferences held in molecular gerontology. Ein Bericht iiber die in dieser Phase erfolgten Kontakte fmdet sich im Anhang A. 1m Anhang B sind die Protokolle der wichtigsten Besprechungen zusammengestellt. 1.2 Thematik und zentrale Begriffe Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, vor dem 65. Lebensjahr zu sterben, ist!p den letzten hundert Jahren von etwa 70% auf etwa 20% gesunken. Geophysikalische Risiken (Uberflutung, Diirre, Erdbeben . ) haben wir in unserem Lebensbereich zu beherrschen gelemt. Hungerkatastrophen sind ffir den 'westlichen' Menschen keine Gefahr mehr. Infektionskrankheiten sind praktisch beseitigt. Selbst der Anteil der Toten durch UnfaIle ging im Laufe der Jahre zuriick. Wir leben Hinger und weniger gefahrlich als unsere Vorfahren. Das ist weitgehend auf den Einsatz der Technik zuriickzufiihren. Die Technik erhOht eindeutig die Lebenserwartung des Menschen. Freilich beeintrachtigt die durch erhOhte Anforderungen an die Lebenaqualitiit hervorgerufene Technik gleichzeitig die Sicherheit: Die Vergiftung von Luft, Wasser und Boden nimmt zu. Nachstehender, im Aufbau etwas eigenwilliger Versuch berucksichtigt im allgemeinen die geologischen Grundlagen, die Sedimentchemie sowie die be sonderen Erscheinungen der Sedimentologie, wie sie in Binnenlandern von Ge birgscharakter auftreten, starker, ohne den so wichtigen allgemeinen syste matischen Teil zu vernachlassigen. So scheint er als Erganzung und als neue umfassende Darstellung seinen Platz beanspruchen zu durfen. Indessen konnten in Riicksicht auf die erwahnten Bucher im urspriinglichen Manuskript Kiir zungen vorgenommen werden. Die zahlreichen Literaturangaben steUen ein zelneHinweiseaufimTexterwahnteneuereArbeitenverschiedenerSprachgebiete dar, wobei es im Interesse der Fachwelt erwiinscht war, die in manchen anderen Publikationen wenig benutzten Arbeiten Kontinentaleuropas (besonders der Schweiz, Deutschlands, Frankreichs, der Niederlande und Osterreichs) etwas starker hervortreten zu lassen, ohne die angelsachsische wissenschaftliche Literatur zu vernachlassigen. Nach der Formulie rung der sog. 'speziellen Relativitatstheorie' (SRT) im Jahr 1905 nah men zunachst nur ein…ige Spezialisten von ihr Kenntnis, bis mit ungefiihr fiinf Jahren Verspatung dann auch zunehmend Nicht-Physiker sich mit ihr zu beschaftigen begannen, angeregt durch populiirwissenschaftliche, all gemeinverstiindliche 'Einfiihrungen' von Kollegen Einsteins wie z. B. Paul Langevin in Frankreich oder Max von Laue in Deutschland. Diese Pha senverschiebung zwischen fachwissenschaftlichem Ausbau der Theorie und offentlicher Notiznahme wiederholte sich bei Einsteins 'allgemeiner Theorie der Relativitat und Gravitation' (ART). Zwischen 1913 und 1915 in ihren wesentlichen Ziigen ausformuliert, wurde sie erst nach einer spektakuliiren experimentellen Bestatigung im Jahr 1919 einem breiterem Publikum be kannt. In meiner Arbeit werde ich den Facettenreichtum der Ausdeutungen, die beide RT erfuhren, zunachst zu referieren und durch repriisentative Zi tate aus der Literatur der Zeit zu belegen haben. Der Umfang dieser Arbeit geht wesentlich auf das Konto dieser ausgewahlten Belege - davon verspre che ich mir, dafi nicht nur bislang unveroffentlichte Dokumente, sondern auch entlegene Texte hier in ihren zentralen Passagen leicht zuganglich ge macht werden. Fernerhin werde ich aber auch zu analysieren haben, warum derartig vielfaltige, einander mitunter diametral entgegengesetzte Interpre tationen einer wissenschaftlichen Theorie vorgelegt wurden. 574 pp. Deutsch.
