Excessive chemotherapy threatens our immune system even further. This situation demands compensatory prophylactic therapeutic regimes. One of these - specific immunostimulation - is more difficult to achieve than the immunosuppression cur rently used in transplantation surgery and the medical treatment of autoimmune dis eases. The earliest attempts to develop suitable medication for immunostimulation were based on traditional remedies which embodied the accumulated experience of several centuries. Medicinal plants are already being used prophylactically as stan dardized and efficacy-optimized preparations for the treatment of various recur rent infections, or in combination with chemotherapeutics in standard medical practice. In order to rationally apply immunostimulants of plant origin, however, it is necessary to search for the active principles of these substances and to produce them in a pure form. Because suitable screening methods have become available only recently, research in this field is in its very beginning. Further progress can be expected from systematic basic research on the mechanisms underlying immunomodulation. The method he used was an ingenious histological technique (La reazione nera) which brought him fame for the discovery of neuronal networks and culminated in the award of the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1906. This technique, however, was not easily reproducible and led to a long-lasting controversy about the reality of the Golgi apparatus. Its identification as a ubiquitous organelle by electron microscopy turned out to be the breakthrough and incited an enormous wave of interest in this organelle at the end of the sixties. In recent years immunochemical techniques and molecular cloning approaches opened up new avenues and led to an ongoing resurgence of interest. The role of the Golgi apparatus in modifying, broadening and refining the structural information conferred by transcription/translation is now generally accepted but still incompletely understood. During the coming years, this topic certainly will remain center stage in the field of cell biology. It has received funds from the European Commission in order to organize four conferences as part of the pro gramme 'Training and Mobility of Researchers', to be held during the period 1997-1999 at Essen, Murcia, Bielefeld and Ioannina. The first Euroconference of this series took place at the University of Essen, April 1-4, 1997. It was devoted to 'Computational Methods for Representations of Groups and Algebras' . The organizers were P. Draxler (Bielefeld) and G. Michler (Essen). This volume collects most of the material presented at the conference. There had been an additional introductory lecture by H. Access to, use of and handing down of TK has been regulated by local laws, customs and tmditions. In most cases, these interactions involve and are driven by proteins, which are the main conductors of any life process within the organism. The physical nature of these interactions is still not well known. This book presents an entirely new approach to analysis of biomolecular in teractions, in particular protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, based on the assumption that these interactions are electromagnetic in nature. This new ap proach is the basis of the Resonant Recognition Model (RRM), which was devel oped over the last 15 years. Certain periodicities within the distribution of energies of delocalised electrons along a protein molecule are crucial to the protein's biological function, i.e. inter action with its target. If protein conductivity were introduced, then charges mov ing through the protein backbone might produce electromagnetic irradiation or ab sorption with spectral characteristics corresponding to energy distribution along the protein. The RRM is capable of calculating these spectral characteristics, which we hypothesized would be in the range of the infrared and visible light. In all there were 82 participants including 14 overseas participants from Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the USA. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. K. N. Pathak, Hon. Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh on October 2, 2000. Prof. Bruce C. Berndt of the University of Illinois, Urbana Chaimpaign, USA delivered the key note address entitled 'The Life, Not Elektronisches Buch and Mathematical Contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan'. He described Ramanujan--as one of this century's most influential Mathematicians. Quoting Mark K. ac, Prof. George E. Andrews of the Pennsylvania State University, USA, in his message for the conference, described Ramanujan as a 'magical genius'. All of them have subsequently been shown to have significant and specific biological activities not only in inflammatory responses but also in other physiological pro cesses. The explosion of research in this area has been an indi cation of the importance of this field but has also meant that it is time for an evaluation of activities of prostaglandins and products of the arachidonate pathway - collectively described as eicosanoids. For this reason the organizers of this conference felt it was timely to bring together workers in the field and critically evaluate some aspects of the role of different eico sanoids in inflammatory responses and the action of the anti inflammatory agents drugs used to modulate or inhibit these responses. The conference held at King's College Hospital Medical School produced lively and constructive discussions. While there are still many complexities to be investigated several important conclusions did emerge.
