The originator, Niels Jerne, hypothesized that the vast diversity of antibodies in each individual forms a network of mutual 'idiotypic' recognition, thus regulating the immune system. In context of emerging concepts of systems biology such as cybernetics and autopoesis, the 'Eigenbehavior' of the immune system fascinated an entire generation of young immunologists. But fascination led to experimental errors and overinterpretation, eventually magnifying the immune system from a mere infection-fighting device to a substrate of personality and individuality. As a result, what initially appeared as an exciting new perspective of the immune system is now viewed as a scientific vagary, and is largely abandoned.The author, himself a participant in the network vagary, begins with a description of the leading theoretical concepts on fact finding in science. This is followed by a historical account of the rise and fall of the network paradigm, complemented by personal interviews with some of the prominent protagonists. By comparing the network paradigm to other, more lasting concepts in life science, the author develops a general perspective on how solid knowledge is derived from error-prone scientific methodology, namely by exposure of scientific notions to the scrutiny of reality.

These developments lead to several fas cinating probabilistic objects, which combine spatial motion with a continuous branching phenomenon and are closely related to certain semilinear partial dif ferential equations. Our first objective is to give a short self-contained presentation of the measure valued branching processes called superprocesses, which have been studied extensively in the last twelve years. We then want to specialize to the important class of superprocesses with quadratic branching mechanism and to explain how a concrete and powerful representation of these processes can be given in terms of the path-valued process called the Brownian snake. To understand this representation as well as to apply it, one needs to derive some remarkable properties of branching trees embedded in linear Brownian motion, which are of independent interest. A nice application of these developments is a simple construction of the random measure called ISE, which was proposed by Aldous as a tree-based model for random distribution of mass and seems to play an important role in asymptotics of certain models of statistical mechanics. We use the Brownian snake approach to investigate connections between super processes and partial differential equations. One of the most famous predictions of the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence is the so-called Kolmogorov-obukhov five-thirds law. As is known, this law is heuristic and, to date, there is no rigorous justification. The article of A. Biryuk deals with the Cauchy problem for a multi-dimensional Burgers equation with periodic boundary conditions. Estimates in suitable norms for the corresponding solutions are derived for 'large' Reynolds numbers, and their relation with the Kolmogorov-Obukhov law are discussed. Similar estimates are also obtained for the Navier-Stokes equation. In the late sixties J. L. Lions introduced a 'perturbation' of the Navier Stokes equations in which he added in the linear momentum equation the hyper dissipative term (-Ll),Bu, f3 ~ 5/4, where Ll is the Laplace operator. This term is referred to as an 'artificial' viscosity. In the March 7, 1985 issue of Nature, Alec Jeffreys and coworkers described the first develop ment ofmu1tilocus probes capable of simultaneously revealing hypervari ability at many loci in the human genome and called the procedure DNA fingerprinting.
