Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - European landscape architecture builds on a common horizon of understanding and yet produces quality works of very different expression and style. In Touch explores outstanding projects created within the European mindset, diving below the surface in an attempt to uncover the common values that bind European design work. The book presents 11 in-depth project 'features', which include thematically related essays, and 28 concise project 'icons'. The features focus both on big and small scale urban and rural situations. On the one hand, the newly installed and subtly designed railway line of the Glattalbahn in the Zurich metropolitan region, on the other the small scale urban spaces the privately developed and publicly used City Dune exterior spaces of the SEB Bank in Copenhagen. On the one hand French Sermange's redesigned heart of the village, focusing on a meadow, on the other and the far reaching site installations referring to local legends in Norway's Lake Seljord region. The essays include debates about landscape policies as well as about how to design with history, about the role of art and nature as well as about pioneer landscape architects across the European countries. In Touch is the third volume in the triennial Landscape Architecture Europe series, following On Site (2009) and Fieldwork (2006). Produced for the Landscape Architecture Europe Foundation (LAE), situated in the Netherlands, it aims to set standards, in design and design critique, by presenting an overview of carefully selected and edited projects and topics of contemporary European landscape architecture. The series is endorsed by the European Federation for Landscape Architecture (EFLA) within the International Federation for Landscape Architecture (IFLA). It is produced under the auspices of Meto Vroom (chairman), Fritz Auweck, Maria Goula, Alastair McCapra and Kathryn Moore, members of the board of the Landscape Architecture Europe Foundation (LAE). The jury of In Touch has been composed by Michael van Gessel (chairman), Antonio Angelillo, Lilli Lic ka, Tone Lindheim, João Ferreira Nunes. The book has been edited by Lisa Diedrich (editor-in-chief), Mark Hendriks, Thierry Kandjee, Claudia Moll, and produced by Harry Harsema.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the framework of the 'Annee non lineaire' (the special nonlinear year) sponsored by the C.N.R.S. (the French National Center for Scien tific Research), a meeting was held in Paris in June 1988. It took place in the Conference Hall of the Ministere de la Recherche and had as an organizing theme the topic of 'Variational Problems.' Nonlinear analysis has been one of the leading themes in mathemat ical research for the past decade. The use of direct variational methods has been particularly successful in understanding problems arising from physics and geometry. The growth of nonlinear analysis is largely due to the wealth of ap plications from various domains of sciences and industrial applica tions. Most of the papers gathered in this volume have their origin in applications: from mechanics, the study of Hamiltonian systems, from physics, from the recent mathematical theory of liquid crystals, from geometry, relativity, etc. Clearly, no single volume could pretend to cover the whole scope of nonlinear variational problems. We have chosen to concentrate on three main aspects of these problems, organizing them roughly around the following topics: 1. Variational methods in partial differential equations in mathemat ical physics 2. Variational problems in geometry 3. Hamiltonian systems and related topics. 492 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Award-winning monograph of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize 2001.Subgroup growth studies the distribution of subgroups of finite index in a group as a function of the index. In the last two decades this topic has developed into one of the most active areas of research in infinite group theory; this book is a systematic and comprehensive account of the substantial theory which has emerged. As well as determining the range of possible 'growth types', for finitely generated groups in general and for groups in particular classes such as linear groups, a main focus of the book is on the tight connection between the subgroup growth of a group and its algebraic structure. A wide range of mathematical disciplines play a significant role in this work: as well as various aspects of infinite group theory, these include finite simple groups and permutation groups, profinite groups, arithmetic groups and Strong Approximation, algebraic and analytic number theory, probability, and p-adic model theory. Relevant aspects of such topics are explained in self-contained 'windows'. 454 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Data quality is one of the most important problems in data management. A database system typically aims to support the creation, maintenance, and use of large amount of data, focusing on the quantity of data. However, real-life data are often dirty: inconsistent, duplicated, inaccurate, incomplete, or stale. Dirty data in a database routinely generate misleading or biased analytical results and decisions, and lead to loss of revenues, credibility and customers. With this comes the need for data quality management. In contrast to traditional data management tasks, data quality management enables the detection and correction of errors in the data, syntactic or semantic, in order to improve the quality of the data and hence, add value to business processes. While data quality has been a longstanding problem for decades, the prevalent use of the Web has increased the risks, on an unprecedented scale, of creating and propagating dirty data. This monograph gives an overview of fundamental issues underlying central aspects of data quality, namely, data consistency, data deduplication, data accuracy, data currency, and information completeness. We promote a uniform logical framework for dealing with these issues, based on data quality rules. The text is organized into seven chapters, focusing on relational data. Chapter One introduces data quality issues. A conditional dependency theory is developed in Chapter Two, for capturing data inconsistencies. It is followed by practical techniques in Chapter 2b for discovering conditional dependencies, and for detecting inconsistencies and repairing data based on conditional dependencies. Matching dependencies are introduced in Chapter Three, as matching rules for data deduplication. A theory of relative information completeness is studied in Chapter Four, revising the classical Closed World Assumption and the Open World Assumption, to characterize incomplete information in the real world. A data currency model is presented in Chapter Five, to identify the current values of entities in a database and to answer queries with the current values, in the absence of reliable timestamps. Finally, interactions between these data quality issues are explored in Chapter Six. Important theoretical results and practical algorithms are covered, but formal proofs are omitted. The bibliographical notes contain pointers to papers in which the results were presented and proven, as well as references to materials for further reading. This text is intended for a seminar course at the graduate level. It is also to serve as a useful resource for researchers and practitioners who are interested in the study of data quality. The fundamental research on data quality draws on several areas, including mathematical logic, computational complexity and database theory. It has raised as many questions as it has answered, and is a rich source of questions and vitality. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The chase has long been used as a central tool to analyze dependencies and their effect on queries. It has been applied to different relevant problems in database theory such as query optimization, query containment and equivalence, dependency implication, and database schema design. Recent years have seen a renewed interest in the chase as an important tool in several database applications, such as data exchange and integration, query answering in incomplete data, and many others. It is well known that the chase algorithm might be non-terminating and thus, in order for it to find practical applicability, it is crucial to identify cases where its termination is guaranteed. Another important aspect to consider when dealing with the chase is that it can introduce null values into the database, thereby leading to incomplete data. Thus, in several scenarios where the chase is used the problem of dealing with data dependencies and incomplete data arises. This book discusses fundamental issues concerning data dependencies and incomplete data with a particular focus on the chase and its applications in different database areas. We report recent results about the crucial issue of identifying conditions that guarantee the chase termination. Different database applications where the chase is a central tool are discussed with particular attention devoted to query answering in the presence of data dependencies and database schema design. Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This monograph is a presentation of a unified approach to a certain class of semimartingale inequalities, which can be regarded as probabilistic extensions of classical estimates for conjugate harmonic functions on the unit disc. The approach, which has its roots in the seminal works of Burkholder in the 80s, enables to deduce a given inequality for semimartingales from the existence of a certain special function with some convex-type properties. Remarkably, an appropriate application of the method leads to the sharp version of the estimate under investigation, which is particularly important for applications. These include the theory of quasiregular mappings (with deep implications to the geometric function theory); the boundedness of two-dimensional Hilbert transform and a more general class of Fourier multipliers; the theory of rank-one convex and quasiconvex functions; and more. The book is divided into a few separate parts. In the introductory chapter we present motivation for the results and relate them to some classical problems in harmonic analysis. The next part contains a general description of the method, which is applied in subsequent chapters to the study of sharp estimates for discrete-time martingales; discrete-time sub- and supermartingales; continuous time processes; the square and maximal functions. Each chapter contains additional bibliographical notes included for reference.¿Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 476 pp. Englisch.…

In the last two decades this topic has developed into one of the most active areas of research in infinite group theory; this book is a systematic and comprehensive account of the substantial theory which has emerged. As well as determining the range of possible 'growth types', for finitely generated groups in general and for groups in particular classes such as linear groups, a main focus of the book is on the tight connection between the subgroup growth of a group and its algebraic structure.A wide range of mathematical disciplines play a significant role in this work: as well as various aspects of infinite group theory, these include finite simple groups and permutation groups, profinite groups, arithmetic groups and Strong Approximation, algebraic and analytic number theory, probability, and p-adic model theory. Relevant aspects of such topics are explained in self-contained 'windows', making the book accessible to a wide mathematical readership.Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 480 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book deals with evolutionary systems whose equation of state can be formulated as a linear Volterra equation in a Banach space. The main feature of the kernels involved is that they consist of unbounded linear operators. The aim is a coherentpresentation of the state of art of the theory including detailed proofs and its applications to problems from mathematical physics, such as viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and electrodynamics with memory. The importance of evolutionary integral equations ¿ which form a larger class than do evolution equations¿¿ stems from such applications and therefore special emphasis is placed on these. A number of models are derived and, by means of the developed theory, discussed thoroughly. An annotated bibliography containing 450 entries increases the book¿s value as an incisive reference text. This excellent book presents a general approach to linear evolutionary systems, with an emphasis on infinite-dimensional systems with time delays, such as those occurring in linear viscoelasticity with or without thermal effects. It gives a very natural and mature extension of the usual semigroup approach to a more general class of infinite-dimensional evolutionary systems. This is the first appearance in the form of a monograph of this recently developed theory. A substantial part of the results are due to the author, or are even new. (¿) It is not a book that one reads in a few days. Rather, it should be considered as an investment with lasting value.(Zentralblatt MATH)In this book, the author, who has been at the forefront of research on these problems for the last decade, has collected, and in many places extended, the known theory for these equations. In addition, he has provided a framework that allows one to relate and evaluate diverse results in the literature.(Mathematical Reviews)This book constitutes a highly valuable addition to the existing literature on the theory of Volterra (evolutionary) integralequations and their applications in physics and engineering. (¿) and for the first time the stress is on the infinite-dimensional case.(SIAM Reviews)Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 392 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The present. volume is the second volume of the book 'Singularities of Differentiable Maps' by V.1. Arnold, A. N. Varchenko and S. M. Gusein-Zade. The first volume, subtitled 'Classification of critical points, caustics and wave fronts', was published by Moscow, 'Nauka', in 1982. It will be referred to in this text simply as 'Volume 1'. Whilst the first volume contained the zoology of differentiable maps, that is it was devoted to a description of what, where and how singularities could be encountered, this volume contains the elements of the anatomy and physiology of singularities of differentiable functions. This means that the questions considered in it are about the structure of singularities and how they function. Another distinctive feature of the present volume is that we take a hard look at questions for which it is important to work in the complex domain, where the first volume was devoted to themes for which, on the whole, it was not important which field (real or complex) we were considering. Such topics as, for example, decomposition of singularities, the connection between singularities and Lie algebras and the asymptotic behaviour of different integrals depending on parameters become clearer in the complex domain. The book consists of three parts. In the first part we consider the topological structure of isolated critical points of holomorphic functions. We describe the fundamental topological characteristics of such critical points: vanishing cycles, distinguished bases, intersection matrices, monodromy groups, the variation operator and their interconnections and method of calculation. 504 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The focus of this book and its geometric notions is on real vector spaces X that are finite or infinite inner product spaces of arbitrary dimension greater than or equal to 2. It characterizes both euclidean and hyperbolic geometry with respect to natural properties of (general) translations and general distances of X. Also for these spaces X, it studies the sphere geometries of Möbius and Lie as well as geometries where Lorentz transformations play the key role.Proofs of newer theorems characterizing isometries and Lorentz transformations under mild hypotheses are included, such as for instance infinite dimensional versions of famous theorems of A.D. Alexandrov on Lorentz transformations. A real benefit is the dimension-free approach to important geometrical theories.New to this third edition is a chapter dealing with a simple and great idea of Leibniz that allows us to characterize, for these same spaces X, hyperplanes of euclidean, hyperbolic geometry, or spherical geometry, the geometries of Lorentz-Minkowski and de Sitter, and this through finite or infinite dimensions greater than 1.Another new and fundamental result in this edition concerns the representation of hyperbolic motions, their form and their transformations. Further we show that the geometry (P,G) of segments based on X is isomorphic to the hyperbolic geometry over X. Here P collects all x in X of norm less than one, G is defined to be the group of bijections of P transforming segments of P onto segments. The only prerequisites for reading this book are basic linear algebra and basic 2- and 3-dimensional real geometry. This implies that mathematicians who have not so far been especially interested in geometry could study and understand some of the great ideas of classical geometries in modern and general contexts.Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 328 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Overview Many problems in mathematical physics and applied mathematics can be reduced to boundary value problems for differential, and in some cases, inte grodifferential equations. These equations are solved by using methods from the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, variational calculus, operational calculus, function theory, functional analysis, probability theory, numerical analysis and computational techniques. Mathematical models of quantum physics require new areas such as generalized functions, theory of distributions, functions of several complex variables, and topological and al gebraic methods. The main purpose of this book is to provide a self contained and system atic introduction to just one aspect of analysis which deals with the theory of fundamental solutions for differential operators and their applications to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, applied mathematics, and engineering, with the related applicable and computational features. The sub ject matter of this book has its own deep rooted theoretical importance since it is related to Green's functions which are associated with most boundary value problems. The application of fundamental solutions to a recently devel oped area of boundary element methods has provided a distinct advantage in that an integral equation representation of a boundary value problem is often x PREFACE more easily solved by numerical methods than a differential equation with specified boundary and initial conditions. This situation makes the subject more attractive to those whose interest is primarily in numerical methods.Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 444 pp. Englisch.…

Neuware -A four-day conference, 'Functional Analysis on the Eve of the Twenty First Century,' was held at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, from October 24 to 27, 1993, in honor of the eightieth birthday of Professor Israel Moiseyevich Gelfand. He was born in Krasnye Okna, near Odessa, on September 2, 1913. Israel Gelfand has played a crucial role in the development of functional analysis during the last half-century. His work and his philosophy have in fact helped to shape our understanding of the term 'functional analysis' itself, as has the celebrated journal Functional Analysis and Its Applications, which he edited for many years. Functional analysis appeared at the beginning of the century in the classic papers of Hilbert on integral operators. Its crucial aspect was the geometric interpretation of families of functions as infinite-dimensional spaces, and of op erators (particularly differential and integral operators) as infinite-dimensional analogues of matrices, directly leading to the geometrization of spectral theory. This view of functional analysis as infinite-dimensional geometry organically included many facets of nineteenth-century classical analysis, such as power series, Fourier series and integrals, and other integral transforms.Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 356 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -In a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the theory of plane algebraic curves, the authors examine this classical area of mathematics that both figured prominently in ancient Greek studies and remains a source of inspiration and atopic of research to this day. Arising from notes for a course given at the University of Bonn in Germany, ¿Plane Algebraic Curves¿ reflects the authors¿ concern for the student audience through its emphasis on motivation, development of imagination, and understanding of basic ideas. As classical objects, curves may be viewed from many angles. This text also provides a foundation for the comprehension and exploration of modern work on singularities. In the first chapter one finds many special curves with very attractive geometric presentations ¿ the wealth of illustrations is a distinctive characteristic of this book ¿ and an introduction to projective geometry (over the complex numbers). In the second chapter one finds a very simple proof of Bezout¿s theorem and a detailed discussion of cubics. The heart of this book ¿ and how else could it be with the first author ¿ is the chapter on the resolution of singularities (always over the complex numbers). (¿) Especially remarkable is the outlook to further work on the topics discussed, with numerous references to the literature. Many examples round off this successful representation of a classical and yet still very much alive subject.(Mathematical Reviews)Springer Nature c/o IBS, Benzstrasse 21, 48619 Heek 732 pp. Englisch.…
