Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This book deals with the constructive Weierstrassian approach to the theory of function spaces and various applications. The first chapter is devoted to a detailed study of quarkonial (subatomic) decompositions of functions and distributions on euclidean spaces, domains, manifolds and fractals. This approach combines the advantages of atomic and wavelet representations. It paves the way to sharp inequalities and embeddings in function spaces, spectral theory of fractal elliptic operators, and a regularity theory of some semi-linear equations. The book is self-contained, although some parts may be considered as a continuation of the author's book Fractals and Spectra. It is directed to mathematicians and (theoretical) physicists interested in the topics indicated and, in particular, how they are interrelated. The book under review can be regarded as a continuation of [his book on 'Fractals and spectra', 1997] (.) There are many sections named: comments, preparations, motivations, discussions and so on. These parts of the book seem to be very interesting and valuable. They help the reader to deal with the main course.(Mathematical Reviews)Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 440 pp. Englisch.

In the last thirty years it owes very much to the scientific pre-eminence of Ennio De Giorgi, Professor of Mathemati cal Analysis at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. His fundamental theorems in Calculus of Variations, in Minimal Surfaces Theory, in Partial Differential Equations, in Axiomatic Set Theory as well as the fertility of his mind to discover both general mathematical structures and techniques which frame many different problems, and profound and meaningful examples which show the limits of a theory and give origin to new results and theories, makes him an absolute reference point for all Italian mathematicians, and a well-known and valued personage in the international mathematical world. We have been students of Ennio de Giorgi. Now, we are glad to present to him, together with all his collegues, friends and former students, these Essays of Mathematical Analysis written in his hon our on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday (February 8th, 1988), with our best wishes and our thanks for all he gave in the past and will give us in the future. It comprises the author¿s lectures on classical approximation methods based on orthogonal polynomials and selected modern tools such as splines and wavelets. Methods for approximating functions on the real line are treated first, as they provide the foundations for the methods on the sphere and the ball and are useful for the analysis of time-dependent (spherical) problems. The author then examines the transfer of these spherical methods to problems on the ball, such as the modeling of the Earth¿s or the brain¿s interior. Specific topics covered include:\* the advantages and disadvantages of Fourier, spline, and wavelet methods\* theory and numerics of orthogonal polynomials on intervals, spheres, and balls\* cubic splines and splines based on reproducing kernels\* multiresolution analysis using wavelets and scaling functionsThis textbook is written for students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and the geosciences who have a basic background in analysis and linear algebra. This book is notan introductory book to parallel processing, nor is it an introductory book to parallelizing compilers. Weassume thatreaders are familiar withth Elektronisches Buch High Performance Compilers for Parallel Computingby Wolfe [121] and Super compilers for Parallel and Vector Computers by Zima and Chapman [125], and that they want to know more about scheduling transformations. In this book we describe both task graph scheduling and loop nest scheduling. Taskgraphschedulingaims atexecuting tasks linked by prece dence constraints; it is a run-time activity. Loop nest scheduling aims at ex ecutingstatementinstances linked bydata dependences;it is a compile-time activity. We are mostly interested in loop nestscheduling, butwe also deal with task graph scheduling for two main reasons: (i) Beautiful algorithms and heuristics have been reported in the literature recently; and (ii) Several graphscheduling, like list scheduling, are the basis techniques used in task ofthe loop transformations implemented in loop nest scheduling. As for loop nest scheduling our goal is to capture in a single place the fantastic developments of the last decade or so. Dozens of loop trans formations have been introduced (loop interchange, skewing, fusion, dis tribution, etc.) before a unifying theory emerged. The theory builds upon the pioneering papers of Karp, Miller, and Winograd [65] and of Lam port [75], and it relies on sophisticated mathematical tools (unimodular transformations, parametric integer linear programming, Hermite decom position, Smithdecomposition, etc.).Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 284 pp. Englisch.

Within the small area of Bad Nauheim, Giessen and Marburg (in alphabetical order) a greater concentration of students of thenno regulation has been trained or worked or is working than probably in any other single area of Europe, if not the world. It is thus most appropriate to hold the Ninth International Symposium on the Pharmacology of Thennoregulation in Giessen, from August 7 to 12, 1994. The community of students of thennoregulation was extremely grateful that Professor Kurt Bruck and the lustus-Liebig-University of Giessen had extended this invitation. The same community was even more saddened that Kurt Bruck died on April 27, 1992 and thus could not participate in this event that had been planned to honour his achievements. As a small token of friendship and affection, the many friends of Kurt Bruck from all over the world who will participate in this event dedicate this symposium to the memory of Kurt Bruck. Furthermore, these results are used to study several other problems, especially fully nonlinear ones.Owing to the new unified approach chosen, known theorems are presented from a novel perspective and new results are derived. The book is self-contained. It is addressed to PhD students and researchers interested in abstract evolution equations and in parabolic partial differential equations and systems. It gives a comprehensive overview on the present state of the art in the field, teaching at the same time how to exploit its basic techniques. This very interesting book provides a systematic treatment of the basic theory of analytic semigroups and abstract parabolic equations in general Banach spaces, and how this theory may be used in the study of parabolic partial differential equations; it takes into account the developments of the theory during the last fifteen years. The evolution of the three-dimensional simulation tools is directly linked to the scaling of the devices and the increasing complex ity of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) cells. Scaling of MOSFET devices led to a three-dimensional geometry with effects which cannot be handled by two-dimensional simulations anymore. With increasing integration density in DRAMs the third dimen sion had to be utilized to realize the storage capacitor. The result ing leakage problems have to be investigated and the cell design optimized by means of three-dimensional simulations. This book is intended for senior undergraduate students in applied physics, electrical engineering and computational physics, as well as for scientists and engineers involved in semiconductor device re search and development. It is also intended for software engineers and all those who are concerned with simulation. The book will give an overview on the problems and activities con cerning three-dimensional device simulation, without the claim of being a classical textbook. It starts from the classical semiconduc tor equations, discusses the physical models used in device simu lation, describes the discretization and some numerical methods for solving the differential equations.

They are characterised by conserved structural elements and a broad commonality of function. Major structural elements All members of the TGF-13 superfamily contain as their major structural hallmark a conserved spacing and distribution of seven cysteine residues. This structure is known as the cysteine knot and tethers together regions of the peptide as well as binding the two chains of the dimer to each other. High resolution structures are now available on proteins from three families within this group including glial derived neurotropic factor (GDNF), BMP-7 and several of the TGF-13s. Despite low similarity between some of these proteins (eg, TGF-13s and GDNF are only 13% identical) they share a strikingly similar three dimensional conformation (Fig. 1). These structural elements imbue the protein with some of its familial characteristics. These include its physico-chemical stability due to tight tethering of portions of the peptide chain via criss-crossing disulphide bonds. Much of its surfaces are coated with hydrophobic patches leading to a propensity to bind non-specifically to other proteins as well as to its self. This also causes a marked propensity for aggregation when the recombinant protein is present at high concentration. 220 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is based on a one year course of lectures on structural sta bility of differential equations which the author has given for the past several years at the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics at the University of Leningrad. The theory of structural stability has been developed intensively over the last 25 years. This theory is now a vast domain of mathematics, having close relations to the classical qualitative theory of differential equations, to differential topology, and to the analysis on manifolds. Evidently it is impossible to present a complete and detailed account of all fundamental results of the theory during a one year course. So the purpose of the course of lectures (and also the purpose of this book) was more modest. The author was going to give an introduction to the language of the theory of structural stability, to formulate its principal results, and to introduce the students (and also the readers of the book) to some of the main methods of this theory. One can select two principal aspects of modern theory of structural stability (of course there are some conventions attached to this state ment). The first one, let us call it the 'geometric' aspect, deals mainly with the description of the picture of trajectories of a system; and the second, let us say the 'analytic' one, has in its centre the method for solving functional equations to find invariant manifolds, conjugating homeomorphisms, and so forth. 204 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In this book, the new and rapidly expanding field of scientific computing is understood in a double sense: as computing for scientific and engineering problems and as the science of doing such computations. Thus scientific computing touches at one side mathematical modelling (in the various fields of applications) and at the other side computer science. As soon as the mathematical models de scribe the features of real life processes in sufficient detail, the associated computations tend to be large scale. As a consequence, interest more and more focusses on such numerical methods that can be expected to cope with large scale computational problems. Moreover, given the algorithms which are known to be efficient on a tradi tional computer, the question of implementation on modern supercomputers may get crucial. The present book is the proceedings of a meeting on 'Large Scale Scientific Computing' , that was held a t the Oberwolfach Mathematical Institute (July 14-19, 1985) under the auspices of the Sonderforschungsbereich 123 of the University of Heidelberg. Participants included applied scientists with computational interests, numerical analysts, and experts on modern parallel computers. 'l'he purpose of the meeting was to establish a common under standing of recent issues in scientific computing, especially in view of large scale problems. Surprisingly, the discrete L 1 analogue, least absolute deviations (LAD) seems to have been considered first. Possibly the LAD criterion was forced into the background because of the com putational difficulties associated with it. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in LAD. It was spurred on by work that has resulted in efficient al gorithms for obtaining LAD fits. Another stimulus came from robust statistics. LAD estimates resist undue effects from a feyv, large errors. Therefore. in addition to being robust, they also make good starting points for other iterative, robust procedures. The LAD criterion has great utility. LAD fits are optimal for linear regressions where the errors are double exponential. However they also have excellent properties well outside this narrow context. In addition they are useful in other linear situations such as time series and multivariate data analysis. Finally, LAD fitting embodies a set of ideas that is important in linear optimization theory and numerical analysis. viii PREFACE In this monograph we will present a unified treatment of the role of LAD techniques in several domains. Some of the material has appeared in recent journal papers and some of it is new. This presentation is organized in the following way. There are three parts, one for Theory, one for Applicatior.s and one for Algorithms. 368 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The second volume of the series on inorganic biochemistry and bio physics is singularly devoted to magnetic resonance on systems of high molecular complexity. Recently, there have been important advances in magnetic resonance studies of polymers; these advances touch on all aspects of magnetic resonance, both theoretical and applied. Particular emphasis is placed here on multipulse experiments. We believe such an report will be of considerable interest to the readers of our series owing to the importance of magnetic resonance techniques in the investigation of biopolymers. Ivano Bertini Harry Gray Series Editors Preface This book is a record of the Proceedings of the International Symposium on 'Advanced Magnetic Resonance Techniques in Systems of High Molecular Complexity', which was held in Siena between 15 and 18 May 1985. The idea of the meeting is due to Proff. N.M. Atherton, G. Giacometti and E. Tiezzi with the aim of honouring the scientific personality of Prof. S.I. Weissman. The meeting has been organized with the assistance of a National Committee formed by R. Basosi, I. Bertini, P. Bucci, C. Corvaia, A. Gamba, G. Martini, G.F. Pedulli, P.A. Temussi, and C.A. Veracini. The invited lecturers responded enthusiastically and a comprehensive picture of the theoretical and practical aspects of magnetic resonance could be therefore provided. The book contains all the plenary lectures delivered during the meeting and also a wide selection among the huge amount of contributions collected by the organizers. 528 pp. Englisch.

The present text is devoted to the mathematical studyofsome particular cases ofdisordered systems. It deals with waves in disordered media. To understand the significance of the influence of disorder, let us start by describing the propagation of waves in a sufficiently ordered or regular environment. That they do in fact propagate is a basic experience that is verified by our senses; we hear sound (acoustic waves) see (electromagnetic waves) and use the fact that electromagnetic waves travel long distances in many aspects ofour daily lives. The discovery that disorder can suppress the transport properties of a medium is oneof the fundamental findings of physics. In its most prominent practical application, the semiconductor, it has revolutionized the technical progress in the past century. A lot of what we see in the world today depends on that relatively young device. The basic phenomenon of wave propagation in disordered media is called a metal-insulator transition: a disordered medium can exhibit good transport prop erties for waves ofrelatively high energy (like a metal) and suppress the propaga tion of waves of low energy (like an insulator). Here we are actually talking about quantum mechanical wave functions that are used to describe electronic transport properties. To give an initial idea of why such a phenomenon could occur, we have to recall that in physical theories waves are represented by solutions to certain partial differential equations. These equations link time derivatives to spatial derivatives. 188 pp.

We have added to the research papers of this book the text of a conversation with Ennio De Giorgi about the diffusion and the communication of science and, in particular, of Mathematics. 544 pp. Englisch.

If such a career is to be achieved by seientists in developing countries where the faeilities are not easily available, even more dedication is required. Dr. K. M. Sivanandaiah, having completed a successful career in the field of peptide chemistry, is such a seientist. Being weIl aware of the limited research facilities available in India, we are extraordinarily appreciative of Professor Sivanandaiah's dedication to the advancement of science. As a Professor of Chemistry and, until his retirement in 1992, the Head of the Department of Studies in Chemistry at Bangalore University, India, he not only devoted much of his time to his students, teaching basic organic chemistry, but was also able to contribute to the field of peptide chemistry. After completing 25 years of service at Central College, Bangalore, where he was admired as an outstanding teacher, Professor Sivanandaiah is still active in research. He is now Professor Emeritus and continues to contribute to the field of peptides. As former students of Professor Sivanandaiah, we felt that publishing a book containing articles related to the design, synthesis, conformation, and biological activity of peptides and written by eminent scientists in the field of peptide research would be a fitting tribute to his role in the field of bioorganic chemistry. 328 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Tbe task of defining the aerothermodynamic environment for a vehicle flying through the air at hypersonic speeds offers diverse challenges to the designer. He must integrate a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, blending mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements. Many of the manned reentry vehicles are relatively blunt or fly at very high angles of attack (so that the drag is relatively large) and enter the atmosphere at a relatively low entry angle. As a result, the hypersonic deceleration occurs at very high altitudes. Because the conversion of kinetic energy to internal energy modes occurs in a low density environment, the flow-field chemistry is an im portant consideration. Experiments on the U. S. Space Shuttle demonstrated the importance of nonequilibrium flow and surface catalycity on the heating to the vehicle. To determine the aerothermodynamic environment of other vehicles op erating hypersonically at very high altitudes, e. g. , the Aero-Assisted Space Transfer Vehicle, the designer may have to consider viscous/inviscid interactions and the modeling of noncontinuum flows. Configurations that have a relatively high ballistic coefficient (such as slender reentry vehicles) and reenter the atmosphere at relatively high angles of attack experience severe heating rates and high dynamic pressures, but only for a short period of time. For these vehicles, continuum flow models incorporating equi librium chemistry are reasonable. 560 pp. Englisch.

The conference, and this volume which contains its proceedings, is a tribute to Professor Ruberti in acknowledgement of his major contributions to System Theory, at a time in which this area was emerging and consolidat ing as an independent discipline, his role as a leader of the Italian academic community, his activity in promoting and fostering close scientific relations between Italian and U.S. scholars in Systems and Control. The format of this conference is inspired by a series of seminars initi ated exactly twenty years ago under the direction of Professor Ruberti, in Italy, and Professor R. R. Mohler, in the U.S. By bringing together many authoritative talents from both countries, these seminars were instrumental in promoting the expansion of System Theory in new areas, notably that of Nonlinear Control, and were the key to successful scientific careers for many of the younger attendants. 416 pp. Englisch.
