Neuware - Asymptotic analysis is an old subject that has found applications in vari- ous fields of pure and applied mathematics, physics and engineering. For instance, asymptotic techniques are used to approximate very complicated integral expressions that result from transform analysis. Similarly, the so- lutions of differential equations can often be computed with great accuracy by taking the sum of a few terms of the divergent series obtained by the asymptotic calculus. In view of the importance of these methods, many excellent books on this subject are available [19], [21], [27], [67], [90], [91], [102], [113]. An important feature of the theory of asymptotic expansions is that experience and intuition play an important part in it because particular problems are rather individual in nature. Our aim is to present a sys- tematic and simplified approach to this theory by the use of distributions (generalized functions). The theory of distributions is another important area of applied mathematics, that has also found many applications in mathematics, physics and engineering. It is only recently, however, that the close ties between asymptotic analysis and the theory of distributions have been studied in detail [15], [43], [44], [84], [92], [112]. As it turns out, generalized functions provide a very appropriate framework for asymptotic analysis, where many analytical operations can be performed, and also pro- vide a systematic procedure to assign values to the divergent integrals that often appear in the literature.

Development of recombinant human G-CSF has had a profound impact on the treatment of many diseases, including severe chronic neutropenia and cancer, and has enabled peripheral stem cell transplantation to supplant bone marrow transplantation in the autologous setting. This Milestones in Drug Therapy volume describes the experience of the last 20 years of treatment with recombinant human G-CSF, including the basic science, the use of recombinant human G-CSF in both the oncology and nononcology settings, and the safety and economics of its use. Many of the authors were the original investigators of recombinant human G-CSF and other authors are key researchers who provide their outlook for the next 20 years for use of and research with recombinant human G-CSF.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 500 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This concise text on geometry with computer modeling presents some elementary methods for analytical modeling and visualization of curves and surfaces. The author systematically examines such powerful tools as 2-D and 3-D animation of geometric images, transformations, shadows, and colors, and then further studies more complex problems in differential geometry. Well-illustrated with more than 350 figures---reproducible using Maple programs in the book---the work is devoted to three main areas: curves, surfaces, and polyhedra. Pedagogical benefits can be found in the large number of Maple programs, some of which are analogous to C++ programs, including those for splines and fractals. To avoid tedious typing, readers will be able to download many of the programs from the Birkhauser web site. Aimed at a broad audience of students, instructors of mathematics, computer scientists, and engineers who have knowledge of analytical geometry, i.e., method of coordinates, this text will be an excellent classroom resource or self-study reference. With over 100 stimulating exercises, problems and solutions, {it Geometry of Curves and Surfaces with Maple} will integrate traditional differential and non- Euclidean geometries with more current computer algebra systems in a practical and user-friendly format. 324 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -My main goal in writing this monograph is to provide a detailed treatment of uncertainty analysis for sampled-data systems in the context of sys tems control theory. Here, sampled-data system refers to the hybrid sys tem formed when continuous time and discrete time systems are intercon nected; by uncertainty analysis I mean achievable performance in the pres ence of worst -case uncertainty and disturbances. The focus of the book is sampled-data systems; however the approach presented is applicable to both standard and sampled-data systems. The past few years has seen a large surge in research activity centered around creating systematic methods for sampled-data design. The aim of this activity has been to deepen and broaden the, by now, sophisticated viewpoint developed for design of purely continuous time or discrete time systems (e.g. J{oo or -I!l optimal synthesis, J1 theory) so that it can be ap plied to the design of sampled-data systems. This research effort has been largely successful, producing both interesting new mathematical tools for control theory, and new methodologies for practical engineering design. Analysis of structured uncertainty is an important objective in control design, because it is a flexible and non-conservative way of analyzing sys tem performance, which is suitable in many engineering design scenarios. 196 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In most countries, primary prevention programmes against the HIV / AIDS epidemic have been implemented. Broadly speaking, three levels of intervention can be identified: - national campaigns directed to the general population; most of them are multi phase campaigns aimed at providing information about HIV transmission and protective behaviour; they use the various mass media channels and are mainly directed to sexual behaviour modifi cation; - community-based interventions, addressed to specific target popula tions; these populations have been typically selected according to both the high risk of infection (gay men and prostitutes) and the difficulty to reach the members of these communities (intravenous drug users); - individual testing and counselling, often supported by public funds or large non-governmental organizations. Major efforts have been devoted to the development and the implemen tation of these preventive programmes, both in terms of human re sources and financial support. On the other hand, in most countries, far less energy has been put into the evaluation of these campaigns. This gap is not explained by the fact that evaluation of AIDS/HIV cam paigns is a totally new challenge in terms of methodology: there are classical methods, developed over twenty years and used in other fields of prevention. 320 pp. Englisch.

Already during and mainly just after World War II the then newly invented electron microscopy was introduced also in Switzerland and its importance quickly increased. In 1955, our Society was split into two sections, i.e. for Optics and for Electron Microscopy, both with their own secretaries. Other foreign Societies for electron microscopy in Europe and all over the world have celebrated their anniversaries in the last few years and held reviews at these occasions. In view of this and facing the fact that many of the pioneers and founders of our Society might help to record the history of electron microscopy in our country, the board of SGOEM-SSOME has decided to have a short review of its history written and published. This short review has now developed into a book. viii I would like to thank here all the authors, who have contributed to this volume very much. My special thanks go to Prof. Dr.John R. Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A basic principle governing the boundary behaviour of holomorphic func tions (and harmonic functions) is this: Under certain growth conditions, for almost every point in the boundary of the domain, these functions ad mit a boundary limit, if we approach the bounda-ry point within certain approach regions. For example, for bounded harmonic functions in the open unit disc, the natural approach regions are nontangential triangles with one vertex in the boundary point, and entirely contained in the disc [Fat06]. In fact, these natural approach regions are optimal, in the sense that convergence will fail if we approach the boundary inside larger regions, having a higher order of contact with the boundary. The first theorem of this sort is due to J. E. Littlewood [Lit27], who proved that if we replace a nontangential region with the rotates of any fixed tangential curve, then convergence fails. In 1984, A. Nagel and E. M. Stein proved that in Euclidean half spaces (and the unit disc) there are in effect regions of convergence that are not nontangential: These larger approach regions contain tangential sequences (as opposed to tangential curves). The phenomenon discovered by Nagel and Stein indicates that the boundary behaviour of ho)omor phic functions (and harmonic functions), in theorems of Fatou type, is regulated by a second principle, which predicts the existence of regions of convergence that are sequentially larger than the natural ones. 172 pp. Englisch.

The 20th volume, however, is in the customary form; it contains 17 contributions from various areas of drug research and therapy. Whereas the articles concentrate on a short representation of the progress which has already been made, nevertheless reference is also made to the many unsolved problems within the particular areas. The editor hopes that the 20th volume will not only represent a comprehensive review but will also be of some use in focusing further investigations on problems of medicine that have still not been overcome. During these eleven years various fields of drug research have undergone important, partly revolutionary, changes. A number of these have already been dealt with, so that the series PROGRESS IN DRUG RESEARCH contains a comprehensive review of a substantial part of our current knowledge. The Editor is particularly grateful for the opportunity of transmitting to those connected with the development of drugs the extensive knowledge of the Authors, who, without exception, are themselves actively engaged in research. Drug research is currently in a state of transformation: reconsideration in the light of the past and reorientation with a view to the future. To a large extent this is due to the tumultuous developments in the last 20 years, developments which are unparalleled in the history of medicine and the consequences of which cannot yet be completely evaluated. Unfortunately, however, the current situation is not devoid of its unpleasant and even tragic aspects, aspects which fall outside the research worker's sphere or influence. Those connected with drug research, be they in industry, in universities or in clinics, are aware of these problems, and, as a result of this awareness, are all the more in need of an aid which will assist them in ascertaining the current position and in fixing future goals. 586 pp. Englisch.

In the 33 years that POR has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valu able help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews, and last but not least, the reviewers have all contributed greatly to the success of this series. So far, it has been the Editors intention to help disseminate informa tion on the vast domain of drug research, and to provide the reader with a tool with which to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The present 18th volume differs from previous volumes insofar as, with the exception of two contributions, it is exclusively concerned with problems of a single field, namely Tropical Medicine. This was occasioned by the Internatio nal Symposium on the investigation and treatment of infectious tropical diseases held in Bombay in January 1974 and organized by the editor in collaboration with the Minister of Health of the State of Maharashtra, Dr. Rafiq Zakaria, the Director of the Hafl'kine Institute, Dr. B. Gaitonde, and with Dr. J. N. Banerjee, Dr. S. K. Bhattacharya and Mr. P. D'Souza. The Hafl'kine Institute celebrated on this occasion the 75th year of its existence and everyone entrusted with the organisation of the Symposium considered themselves fortunate to have been able to help in strengthening the contacts between Indian and foreign research workers, in the hope of, in this way, making a contribution to the fight against infectious tropical diseases. The editor hopes that the present 18th volume will represent comprehensive information on the topics treated at the Symposium; the 19th volume, which will soon appear, is concerned with the same area, so that the two volumes together should give a good picture of the many still unsolved problems. The editor would also like to take this opportunity of expressing his gratitude to his collaborator, Dr. A. Neuware -Volumes 18 and 19 of 'Progress in Drug Research' differed from the earlier volumes insofar as they were concerned almost exclusively with problems in the field of Tropical Medicine. The editor and publishers believed that in this way some contribution could be made to the solution of some of the many problems with which the developing countries are burdened. The editor would also like to take this opportunity of expressing his gratitude to Dr. A. Naffor carefully working over the manuscripts and correcting proofs. Thanks are also due to the publishers and the printers, Druckerei Birkhauser, especially Dr. A. Birkhauser, Th. Birkhauser and C. Einsele, for their painstaking work on the printing and lay-out of the volume. August 1976 Dr. E. Schoenberg's published articles. The selection made and the grouping in which the papers are presented here reflect most strongly Schoenberg's wishes. The first volume of these seleeta is drawn from Schoenberg's remarkable work on Number Theory, Positive Definite Functions and Metric Geometry, Real and Complex Analysis, and on the Landau Problem. Schoenberg's fundamental papers on Total Pos itivity and Variation Diminution, on P6lya Frequency functions and sequences, and on Splines, especially Cardinal Splines, make up the second volume. In addition, various commentaries have been provided. Lettered references in these refer to items listed alphabetically at the end of each commentary. Numbered references refer to the list of Schoenberg's publications to be found in each volume. Those included in these seleeta are starred. It has been an honor to have been entrusted with the editorial work for these seleeta. I am grateful to the writers of the various commentaries for their illuminating contributions and to Richard Askey for solid advice.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 428 pp. Englisch.
