This collection contains all the published papers, with the exception of some short announcements that Whitney did not wish to be included. We also include the introduction to his book Geometric Integration Theory, and one previously unpublished manuscript on the four-color problem. The papers are presented under some broad categories: graphs and combinatorics, differentiable functions and singularities, analytic spaces, manifolds, bundles and characteristic classes, topology and algebraic topology, geometric integration theory. Whitney intended to write an introduction to this collection. Unfortunately he left us no manuscript at the time of his death, May 10, 1989. We had discussed the possibility of using his paper 'Moscow 1935 - Topology moving toward America,' written for the Centennial of the American Mathematical Society, as part of his introduction to this collection, an idea which he much liked. We therefore include this paper, which contains personal information as well as mathematical reflections, as Whitney's own introduction to these volumes. Whitney's mathematical style, like his personal style, was that of an explorer and pioneer. One of the pictures included in these volumes shows him as a mountain climber. In mathematics, he preferred to work on undeveloped areas: break new ground and build foundations. It is evident from years of research and development that certain classes of compounds (e.g., NSAIDs, steroids, and so on) have had a meas ure of success in alleviating pain and even dampening cellularlhormonal mechanisms involved in the process. Clear, mechanism-related therapies (e.g., for arthritis) and targeted drugs (e.g., for transplantation) have not been available in the past and, in reality, research in inflammation has re lied on more phenomenological approaches for resolving symptoms or on blatant cytoreductive approaches in cases like organ transplantation. A common formalism for these theories and algorithms is obtained in a variational form. Thank to this formalization, mathematical questions about the soundness of algorithms can be raised and answered. Perception theory has to deal with the complex interaction between regions and 'edges' (or boundaries) in an image: in the variational seg mentation energies, 'edge' terms compete with 'region' terms in a way which is supposed to impose regularity on both regions and boundaries. This fact was an experimental guess in perception phenomenology and computer vision until it was proposed as a mathematical conjecture by Mumford and Shah. The third part of the book presents a unified presentation of the evi dences in favour of the conjecture. It is proved that the competition of one-dimensional and two-dimensional energy terms in a variational for mulation cannot create fractal-like behaviour for the edges. The proof of regularity for the edges of a segmentation constantly involves con cepts from geometric measure theory, which proves to be central in im age processing theory. The available evidence suggests that, at present, the Brueckner-Bethe method can be used to locate the saturation point with an uncertainty of -1 2-3 MeV in energy and about 0.1 fm in~. This is not very high accuracy, but it is good enough to make a start on physically interesting calculations. In this paper I describe the Brueckner-Bethe method and illustrate it with numerical results. Like the previous symposia at the University of Nottingham (1983) and Virginia Commonwealth University (1989) the topics discussed were related to bioelectric phenomena, including solid state theoretical and experimental approaches to charge and energy transfer in biomolecular and cellular systems, ion and electron transport properties of biological and artifical membranes, the effects of electric fields on biological systems, photoinduced bioelectrochemical phenomena, and the applications of bioelectrochemical technology. The present conference also introduced procedures which may well serve to define the mechanisms of various bioelectrical phenomena, including electroporation for gene transfer and electro fusion for hybridoma formation. The significance of this objective is obvious. A technique finally materialized in 1990 when Dr. Ashley T. Haase and coworkers published results that used multiple prim ers with complementary tails in intact cells. Since then, a number of laboratories have successfully developed their own versions of the technique. In situ peR is now a well-recognized method that permits the detection of minute quantities of DNA or RNA in intact cells or tissue sections. As a result, morphological analysis of those target nucleotide sequences becomes possible. As anticipated, this ad vancement has led to significant improvement in our understanding of many nor mal and abnormal conditions, and its impact is becoming more evident as time passes. In situ peR has the characteristics of a new landmark in morphologic technol ogy-it is scientifically fascinating and technically challenging. It was sponsored by the Center for Brain Sciences and Metabolism Charitable Trust, a foun dation which, during the past few years, had also organized seven other conferences related to interactions between circulating compounds (drugs, nutrients, hormones, toxins) and brain function. The Center's most recent other conferences were on 'Melatonin in Humans' (Vienna, Austria; November 1985) and 'The Pharmacology of Memory Disorders Associ ated with Aging' (Zurich, Switzerland; January 1987). The available evidence suggests that, at present, the Brueckner-Bethe method can be used to locate the saturation point with an uncertainty of -1 2-3 MeV in energy and about 0.1 fm in~. This is not very high accuracy, but it is good enough to make a start on physically interesting calculations. In this paper I describe the Brueckner-Bethe method and illustrate it with numerical results. It extends the idea of finite local model-checking, which was introduced by Stirling and Walker: rather than traversing the entire state space of a model, as is done for model-checking in the sense of Emerson, Clarke et ai. (checking whether a (finite) model satisfies a formula), local model-checking asks whether a particular state satisfies a formula, and only explores the nearby states far enough to answer that question. The technique used was a tableau method, constructing a tableau according to the formula and the local structure of the model. This tableau technique is here generalized to the infinite case by considering sets of states, rather than single states; because the logic used, the propositional modal mu-calculus, separates simple modal and boolean connectives from powerful fix-point operators (which make the logic more expressive than many other temporal logics), it is possible to give a rela tively straightforward set of rules for constructing a tableau. Much of the subtlety is removed from the tableau itself, and put into a relation on the state space defined by the tableau-the success of the tableau then depends on the well-foundedness of this relation. These workshops have been held at the Abisko Research Station of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, a remote location far above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. During the period of the midnight sun, from May 4-8, 1987 this exotic venue served as the gathering place for a small group of scientists, scholars, and other connoisseurs of the unknown to ponder the problem of how to model 'living systems,' a term singling out those systems whose principal components are living agents. The 1987 Abisko Workshop focused primarily upon the general system-theoretic concepts of process, function, and form. In particular, a main theme of the Workshop was to examine how these concepts are actually realized in biological, economic, and linguistic situations. Like the previous symposia at the University of Nottingham (1983) and Virginia Commonwealth University (1989) the topics discussed were related to bioelectric phenomena, including solid state theoretical and experimental approaches to charge and energy transfer in biomolecular and cellular systems, ion and electron transport properties of biological and artifical membranes, the effects of electric fields on biological systems, photoinduced bioelectrochemical phenomena, and the applications of bioelectrochemical technology. The present conference also introduced procedures which may well serve to define the mechanisms of various bioelectrical phenomena, including electroporation for gene transfer and electro fusion for hybridoma formation. The significance of this objective is obvious. A technique finally materialized in 1990 when Dr. Ashley T. Haase and coworkers published results that used multiple prim ers with complementary tails in intact cells. Since then, a number of laboratories have successfully developed their own versions of the technique. In situ peR is now a well-recognized method that permits the detection of minute quantities of DNA or RNA in intact cells or tissue sections. As a result, morphological analysis of those target nucleotide sequences becomes possible. As anticipated, this ad vancement has led to significant improvement in our understanding of many nor mal and abnormal conditions, and its impact is becoming more evident as time passes. In situ peR has the characteristics of a new landmark in morphologic technol ogy-it is scientifically fascinating and technically challenging. In essence, it is a combination of in situ hybridization and conventional peR. The wealth of litera ture, experience and protocols for the two latter techniques can be applied to in situ peR. It brought together European researchers who, under the inspiration of the Schwartz Seminar in Paris, were using probabi listic methods in the study of the geometry of Banach spaces, a rather small number of probabilists who were already studying classical limit laws on Banach spaces, and a larger number of probabilists, specialists in various aspects of the study of Gaussian processes, whose results and techniques were of interest to the members of the first two groups. This first conference was very fruitful. It fos tered a continuing relationship among 50 to 75 probabilists and analysts working on probability on infinite-dimensional spaces, the geometry of Banach spaces, and the use of random methods in harmonic analysis. Six more international conferences were held since the 1975 meeting. Two of the meetings were held at Tufts University, one at S¢nderborg, Denmark, and the others at Oberwolfach. This volume contains a selection of papers by the partici pants of the Seventh International Conference held at Oberwolfach, West Ger many, June 26-July 2, 1988. This exciting and provocative conference was at tended by more than 50 mathematicians from many countries. These papers demonstrate the range of interests of the conference participants.
