The exposition is clearly motivated and unfolds systematically, aided by numerous graphics. Key features of the book: The important role of the spectrum of a transfer operator is studied Excellent graphics show how wavelets depend on the spectra of the transfer operators Key topics of wavelet theory are examined: connected components in the variety of wavelets, the geometry of winding numbers, the Galerkin projection method, classical functions of Weierstrass and Hurwitz and their role in describing the eigenvalue-spectrum of the transfer operator, isospectral families of wavelets, spectral radius formulas for the transfer operator, Perron-Frobenius theory, and quadrature mirror filters New previously unpublished results appear on the homotopy of multiresolutions, on approximation theory, and on the spectrum and structure of the fixed points of the associated transfer and subdivision operators Concise background material for each chapter, open problems, exercises, bibliography, and comprehensive index make this work a fine pedagogical and reference resource. This self-contained book deals with important applications to signal processing, communications engineering, computer graphics algorithms, qubit algorithms and chaos theory, and is aimed at a broad readership of graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in applied mathematics and engineering. The book is also useful for other mathematicians with an interest in the interface between mathematics and communication theory. 424 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is an axiomatic treatment of the properties of continuous multivariable functions and related results from topology. The author covers boundedness, extreme values, and uniform continuity of functions, along with connections between continuity and topological concepts such as connectedness and compactness. The order of topics mimics the order of development in elementary calculus, with analogies and generalizations from such familiar ideas as the Pythagorean theorem. 220 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is primarily a research monograph that presents in a unified man ner some recent research on a class of hybrid dynamical systems (HDS). The book is intended both for researchers and advanced postgraduate stu dents working in the areas of control engineering, theoretical computer science, or applied mathematics and with an interest in the emerging field of hybrid dynamical systems. The book assumes competence in the basic mathematical techniques of modern control theory. The material presented in this book derives from a period of fruitful research collaboration between the authors that began in 1994 and is still ongoing. Some of the material contained herein has appeared as isolated results in journal papers and conference proceedings. This work presents this material in an integrated and coherent manner and also presents many new results. Much of the material arose from joint work with students and colleagues, and the authors wish to acknowledge the major contributions made by Ian Petersen, Efstratios Skafidas, Valery Ugrinovskii, David Cook, Iven Mareels, and Bill Moran. There is currently no precise definition of a hybrid dynamical system; however, in broad terms it is a dynamical system that involves a mixture of discrete-valued and continuous-valued variables. Since the early 1990s, a bewildering array of results have appeared under the umbrella of HDS, ranging from the analysis of elementary on-off control systems to sophis ticated mathematical logic-based descriptions of large real-time software systems. 168 pp. Englisch.…
