Extracellular stimuli that inform cells about such needs are hormones, cytokines and neurotransmitters, which bind to specific cell surface receptors. Inside the cell, secondary signals are then produced which, ultimately, initiate the expression of proteins giving novel functional properties to the stimulated cells. This process can be controlled at a transcriptional, posttranscriptional, translational or posttranslational level. Extensive research over the past fifteen years has shown that transcriptional regulation is probably the most impor tant strategy used to control the production of new proteins in response to hormonal signals. At the level of gene transcription, the initiation of mRNA synthesis is most frequently used to govern gene expression. The key elements controlling transcription initiation in eukaryotes are acti vator proteins (transactivators) that bind in a sequence-specific manner to short DNA sequences in the proximity of genes. The activator binding sites are elements oflarger control units, called promoters and enhancers, which bind many distinct proteins that may synergize or negatively cooperative with the activators. The de novo binding of an activator to DNA or, if already bound to DNA, its functional activation is what ultimately turns on a high-level expression of genes. One reason for the timeliness was perhaps that experiments of the seventies had already lent confirmation to the separate theories of strong and of electroweak forces, so that for the eighties it now seems especially compelling to attempt the grand unification of these two forces. Also, the planned experiments to search for proton decay and the new experiments which are suggestive, though not yet conclusive, of non-zero neutrino rest masses add further stimulus to the theory. Thus, the workshop provided an ideal forum for exchange of ideas amongst active physicists. The presentations at the workshop covered the present status of both theory and experiment with a strong interplay. Also, there were presentations from the discipline of astrophysics which is becoming very intertwined with that of high-energy physics especially when in the latter one is addressing energies and temperatures that were extant only in the first nanosecond of the universe. The principal theme of the workshop shares the title of this volume and the latter is a direct outgrowth of the workshop. IWAA was founded in 1984 by Professor Caslav V. Stanojevic. Algebraic geometry may, in an elementary way, be viewed as the study of the structure and properties of the solutions of systems of algebraic equations. The aim of these notes is to provide access to the methods of algebraic geometry for engineers and applied scientists through the motivated context of control theory. I began the development of these notes over fifteen years ago with a series of lectures given to the Control Group at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden. Over the following years, I presented the material in courses at Brown several times and must express my appreciation for the feedback (sic!) received from the students. In recent years, powerful tools such as X-ray crystal lography, electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and infra-red and Raman spectroscopy have been developed to characterize the structure and dy namics of biomembranes. Despite this progress, many of the factors responsible for the function of biomembranes are still not well understood. The membrane is a very complicated supramolecular liquid-crystalline structure that is largely composed of lipids, forming a bilayer, to which proteins and other biomolecules are anchored. Often, the lipid bilayer environment is pictured as a hydropho bic structureless slab providing a thermodynamic driving force to partition the amino acids of a membrane protein according to their solubility. However, much of the molecular complexity of the phospholipid bilayer environment is ignored in such a simplified view. It is likely that the atomic details of the polar head group region and the transition from the bulk water to the hydrophobic core of the membrane are important. The purpose of the project was to use stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) to describe the flow of fluid in a medium where some of the parameters, e.g., the permeability, were stochastic or 'noisy'. We soon realized that the theory of SPDEs at the time was insufficient to handle such equations.
