This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A number of years ago, Harriet Sheridan, then Dean of Brown University, organized a series oflectures in which individual faculty members described how it came about that they entered their various fields. I was invited to participate in this series and found in the invitation an opportunity to recall events going back to my early teens. The lecture was well received and its reception encouraged me to work up an expanded version. My manuscript lay dormant all these years. In the meanwhile, sufficiently many other mathematical experiences and encounters accumulated to make this little book. My 1981 lecture is the basis of the first piece: 'Napoleon's Theorem. ' Although there is a connection between the first piece and the second, the four pieces here are essentially independent. The sec ond piece, 'Carpenter and the Napoleon Ascription,' has as its object a full description of a certain type of scholar-storyteller (of whom I have known and admired several). It is a pastiche, contain ing a salad bar selection blended together by my own imagination. This piece purports, as a secondary goal, to present a solution to a certain unsolved historical problem raised in the first piece. The third piece, 'The Man Who Began His Lectures with 'Namely',' is a short reminiscence of Stefan Bergman, one of my teachers of graduate mathematics. Bergman, a remarkable person ality, was born in Poland and came to the United States in 1939. 316 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -To commemorate properly the 70th birthday of a man who, by his very nature, is too busy to pause for any kind of ceremonial event unless it has a concomitant functional output was a difficult problem for the Staff and Associates of the Neurosciences Research Program. Frank (F. O. S. ) has always dreaded the prospect that sometime it might be appropriate for his colleagues to present him a Fest schrift. In fact, 'Fest me no Schriften' became his battle cry, expressing his feeling that the idea of testimonials clustered into a book was anathema. So the 'break through' idea for the planners was to organize a symposium around the theme of discovery in neuroscience that would be valuable scientifically and, in its demon stration of interdisciplinary interaction, would support that emphasis in Frank's career. After much planning a program was developed, beginning with a birthday party the evening before, followed by the two-day symposium, and closing with the first F. O. Schmitt Lecture in Neuroscience. We hope that publication of the scientific proceedings in this volume will be of interest not only to the neuroscience community, but also to a broad general readership interested in discovery, under standing, and the creative processes in scientific work. An organizing committee, chaired by Fred Worden, collected advice and guidance leading to the selection of speakers whose scientific careers have played an important part in the recent history of modern neuroscience. 648 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The concept of symmetric space is of central importance in many branches of mathematics. Compactifications of these spaces have been studied from the points of view of representation theory, geometry, and random walks. This work is devoted to the study of the interrelationships among these various compactifications and, in particular, focuses on the martin compactifications. It is the first exposition to treat compactifications of symmetric spaces systematically and to uniformized the various points of view.Key features:\* definition and detailed analysis of the Martin compactifications\* new geometric Compactification, defined in terms of the Tits building, that coincides with the Martin Compactification at the bottom of the positive spectrum.\* geometric, non-inductive, description of the Karpelevic Compactification\* study of the well-know isomorphism between the Satake compactifications and the Furstenberg compactifications\* systematic and clear progression of topics from geometry to analysis, and finally to random walksThe work is largely self-contained, with comprehensive references to the literature. It is an excellent resource for both researchers and graduate students. 304 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The quadratic cost optimal control problem for systems described by linear ordinary differential equations occupies a central role in the study of control systems both from the theoretical and design points of view. The study of this problem over an infinite time horizon shows the beautiful interplay between optimality and the qualitative properties of systems such as controllability, observability and stability. This theory is far more difficult for infinite-dimensional systems such as systems with time delay and distributed parameter systems. In the first place, the difficulty stems from the essential unboundedness of the system operator. Secondly, when control and observation are exercised through the boundary of the domain, the operator representing the sensor and actuator are also often unbounded. The present book, in two volumes, is in some sense a self-contained account of this theory of quadratic cost optimal control for a large class of infinite-dimensional systems. Volume I deals with the theory of time evolution of controlled infinite-dimensional systems. It contains a reasonably complete account of the necessary semigroup theory and the theory of delay-differential and partial differential equations. Volume II deals with the optimal control of such systems when performance is measured via a quadratic cost. It covers recent work on the boundary control of hyperbolic systems and exact controllability. Some of the material covered here appears for the first time in book form. The book should be useful for mathematicians and theoretical engineers interested in the field of control. 368 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The book contains the methods and bases of functional analysis that are directly adjacent to the problems of numerical mathematics and its applications; they are what one needs for the understand ing from a general viewpoint of ideas and methods of computational mathematics and of optimization problems for numerical algorithms. Functional analysis in mathematics is now just the small visible part of the iceberg. Its relief and summit were formed under the influence of this author's personal experience and tastes. This edition in English contains some additions and changes as compared to the second edition in Russian; discovered errors and misprints had been corrected again here; to the author's distress, they jump incomprehensibly from one edition to another as fleas. The list of literature is far from being complete; just a number of textbooks and monographs published in Russian have been included. The author is grateful to S. Gerasimova for her help and patience in the complex process of typing the mathematical manuscript while the author corrected, rearranged, supplemented, simplified, general ized, and improved as it seemed to him the book's contents. The author thanks G. Kontarev for the difficult job of translation and V. Klyachin for the excellent figures. 272 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume consists of a collection of articles for the proceedings of the 40th Taniguchi Symposium Analysis and Geometry in Several Complex Variables held in Katata, Japan, on June 23-28, 1997. Since the inhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equation was introduced in the study of Complex Analysis of Several Variables, there has been strong interaction between Complex Analysis and Real Analysis, in particular, the theory of Partial Differential Equations. Problems in Complex Anal ysis stimulate the development of the PDE theory which subsequently can be applied to Complex Analysis. This interaction involves Differen tial Geometry, for instance, via the CR structure modeled on the induced structure on the boundary of a complex manifold. Such structures are naturally related to the PDE theory. Differential Geometric formalisms are efficiently used in settling problems in Complex Analysis and the results enrich the theory of Differential Geometry. This volume focuses on the most recent developments in this inter action, including links with other fields such as Algebraic Geometry and Theoretical Physics. Written by participants in the Symposium, this vol ume treats various aspects of CR geometry and the Bergman kernel/ pro jection, together with other major subjects in modern Complex Analysis. We hope that this volume will serve as a resource for all who are interested in the new trends in this area. We would like to express our gratitude to the Taniguchi Foundation for generous financial support and hospitality. We would also like to thank Professor Kiyosi Ito who coordinated the organization of the symposium. 332 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Analysis on Lie Groups with Polynomial Growth is the first book to present a method for examining the surprising connection between invariant differential operators and almost periodic operators on a suitable nilpotent Lie group. It deals with the theory of second-order, right invariant, elliptic operators on a large class of manifolds: Lie groups with polynomial growth. In systematically developing the analytic and algebraic background on Lie groups with polynomial growth, it is possible to describe the large time behavior for the semigroup generated by a complex second-order operator with the aid of homogenization theory and to present an asymptotic expansion. Further, the text goes beyond the classical homogenization theory by converting an analytical problem into an algebraic one. This work is aimed at graduate students as well as researchers in the above areas. Prerequisites include knowledge of basic results from semigroup theory and Lie group theory. 324 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The fourth Conference on Computation and Control was held at Mon tana State University in Bozeman, Montana from August 3-9, 1994. These proceedings represent the continued evolution of the cross-disciplinary dia logue begun at the 1988 conference (Volume 1 of PSCT) and continued on a biennial basis in 1990 and 1992. Those proceedings are housed in Volume 11 of PSCT and Volume 15 of PSCT, respectively. In recent years considerable effort has been devoted to the problem of developing rigorous numerical methods and computational tools for con trol design and analysis. Although computational problems in control are extremely complex, these problems often have special structures that can be exploited to obtain both theoretical and computational results. More over, problems that arise from applications are best addressed by interdis ciplinary approaches where experts in various disciplines (e. g. numerical analysis, control theory, fluid dynamics) come together and create numer ical algorithms specifically for use in control design. This communication not only creates new mathematical tools, it often produces new research problems in the individual disciplines. This conference continues to bring together leading experts in control theory, numerical mathematics and var ious application areas to discuss recent developments in interdisciplinary approaches to computational control. The organizers acknowledge the generous support of the Montana State University Foundation, the National Science Foundation's Division of Mathematical Sciences and the EPSCoR Program (Montana Group for Nonlinear Science). 372 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As a five year old I encountered a picture of a young man in a rakish hat and a yellow coat, on the wall of a large classroom. There was something instantly intriguing about the image, but it was also puzzling because it represented neither politician nor prince, the usual fare for Australian school decorations. I was eventually told that this was a reproduction of a painting, the artist was Vincent van Gogh, and that the subject was some young Frenchman. On special days we assembled in that room and during the next several years I found myself gazing beyond visiting speakers at the fellow in the yellow jacket. It was almost another fifty years before I felt properly conversant with the portrait and realized that van Gogh's subject, Armand Roulin, was seventeen at the time ofthe original painting and had died at seventy-four during my schoolboy contemplations. In the interim my enjoyment of the works of the Impressionists and Post Impressionists had grown and I occasionally ran into the name of Dr. Gachet, Vincent's last attending physician, in books and catalog essays. The doctor was my entree to the overlapping charms of medical and art histories. In 1987 I had the good fortune to participate as a biochemist in the centenary celebration of the Pasteur Institut in Paris. 336 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The mathematical theory of control, essentially developed during the last decades, is used for solving many problems of practical importance. The efficiency of its applications has increased in connection with the refine ment of computer techniques and the corresponding mathematical soft ware. Real-time control schemes that include computer-realized blocks are, for example, attracting ever more attention. The theory of control provides abstract models of controlled systems and the processes realized in them. This theory investigates these models, proposes methods for solv ing the corresponding problems and indicates ways to construct control algorithms and the methods of their computer realization. The usual scheme of control is the following: There is an object F whose state at every time instant t is described by a phase variable x. The object is subjected to a control action u. This action is generated by a control device U. The object is also affected by a disturbance v generated by the environment. The information on the state of the system is supplied to the generator U by the informational variable y. The mathematical character of the variables x, u, v and yare determined by the nature of the system. 340 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book considers methods of approximate analysis of mechanical, elec tromechanical, and other systems described by ordinary differential equa tions. Modern mathematical modeling of sophisticated mechanical systems consists of several stages: first, construction of a mechanical model, and then writing appropriate equations and their analytical or numerical ex amination. Usually, this procedure is repeated several times. Even if an initial model correctly reflects the main properties of a phenomenon, it de scribes, as a rule, many unnecessary details that make equations of motion too complicated. As experience and experimental data are accumulated, the researcher considers simpler models and simplifies the equations. Thus some terms are discarded, the order of the equations is lowered, and so on. This process requires time, experimentation, and the researcher's intu ition. A good example of such a semi-experimental way of simplifying is a gyroscopic precession equation. Formal mathematical proofs of its admis sibility appeared some several decades after its successful introduction in engineering calculations. Applied mathematics now has at its disposal many methods of approxi mate analysis of differential equations. Application of these methods could shorten and formalize the procedure of simplifying the equations and, thus, of constructing approximate motion models. Wide application of the methods into practice is hindered by the fol lowing. 1. Descriptions of various approximate methods are scattered over the mathematical literature. The researcher, as a rule, does not know what method is most suitable for a specific case. 2. 244 pp. Englisch.…

The demand for reliable functioning of these systems has become more and more important. Thus, there is a need for highly reliable technical devices and systems, for monitoring and controlling their functioning and for planning maintenance and corrective actions to fulfill given requirements considering eco nomic limitations. These tasks reflect the wide field of engineering activities that are accompa nied by and based on a wide range of stochastical models. The book presents the main contributions to a workshop on Stochastic Models of Reliability, Qual ity, and Safety held in Schierke near Magdeburg, Germany. This workshop was part of a series of meetings that take place every two years organized by the Society of Reliability, Quality and Safety. The basic idea of these workshops is to bring together theorists, applied statisticians, and practitioners to exchange experiences and ideas of common interest. The book contains recent results in reliability and related fields. The presentation aims at making at least a part of the results accessible to engineers. 412 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Unlike the conventional research for the general theory of stability, this mono graph deals with problems on stability and stabilization of dynamic systems with respect not to all but just to a given part of the variables characterizing these systems. Such problems are often referred to as the problems of partial stability (stabilization). They naturally arise in applications either from the requirement of proper performance of a system or in assessing system capa bility. In addition, a lot of actual (or desired) phenomena can be formulated in terms of these problems and be analyzed with these problems taken as the basis. The following multiaspect phenomena and problems can be indicated: - 'Lotka-Volterra ecological principle of extinction;' - focusing and acceleration of particles in electromagnetic fields; - 'drift' of the gyroscope axis; - stabilization of a spacecraft by specially arranged relative motion of rotors connected to it. Also very effective is the approach to the problem of stability (stabilization) with respect to all the variables based on preliminary analysis of partial sta bility (stabilization). A. M. Lyapunov, the founder of the modern theory of stability, was the first to formulate the problem of partial stability. Later, works by V. V. Rumyan tsev drew the attention of many mathematicians and mechanicians around the world to this problem, which resulted in its being intensively worked out. The method of Lyapunov functions became the key investigative method which turned out to be very effective in analyzing both theoretic and applied problems. 446 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Representation theory, and more generally Lie theory, has played a very important role in many of the recent developments of mathematics and in the interaction of mathematics with physics. In August-September 1989, a workshop (Third Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications) was held in the environs of C6rdoba, Argentina to present expositions of important recent developments in the field that would be accessible to graduate students and researchers in related fields. This volume contains articles that are edited versions of the lectures (and short courses) given at the workshop. Within representation theory, one of the main open problems is to determine the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Although this prob lem is as yet unsolved, the recent work of Barbasch, Vogan, Arthur as well as others has shed new light on the structure of the problem. The article of D. Vogan presents an exposition of some aspects of this prob lem, emphasizing an extension of the orbit method of Kostant, Kirillov. Several examples are given that explain why the orbit method should be extended and how this extension should be implemented. 244 pp. Englisch.…

When the first seafarers set out in their primitive ships they had to understand, as best they could, tides and currents, eddies and vortices, for lack of understanding often led to loss of live. These primitive oceanographers were, of course, primarily statisticians. They collected what empirical data they could, and passed it down, ini tially by word of mouth, to their descendants. Data collection continued throughout the millenia, and although data bases became larger, more re liable, and better codified, it was not really until surprisingly recently that mankind began to try to understand the physics behind these data, and, shortly afterwards, to attempt to model it. The basic modelling tool of physical oceanography is, today, the partial differential equation. Somehow, we all 'know' that if only we could find the right set of equations, with the right initial and boundary conditions, then we could solve the mysteries of ocean dynamics once and for all. 488 pp. Englisch. …

The three main streams of research in this field, Topological Degree, Singularity Theory and Variational Meth ods, have lately become impetuous rivers of scientific investigation. The process is still going on and the achievements in this area are spectacular. A most promising and rapidly developing field of research is the study of the role that symmetries play in nonlinear problems. Symmetries appear in a quite natural way in many problems in physics and in differential or symplectic geometry, such as closed orbits for autonomous Hamiltonian systems, configurations of symmetric elastic plates under pressure, Hopf Bifurcation, Taylor vortices, convective motions of fluids, oscillations of chemical reactions, etc . . . Some of these problems have been tackled recently by different techniques using equivariant versions of Degree, Singularity and Variations. The main purpose of the present volume is to give a survey of some of the most significant achievements obtained by topological methods in Nonlinear Analysis during the last two-three decades. The survey articles presented here reflect the personal taste and points of view of the authors (all of them well-known and distinguished specialists in their own fields) on the subject matter. A common feature of these papers is that of start ing with an historical introductory background of the different disciplines under consideration and climbing up to the heights of the most recent re sults. 548 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This collection of articles serves to commemorate the legacy of Joseph D'Atri, who passed away on April 29, 1993, a few days after his 55th birthday. Joe D' Atri is credited with several fundamental discoveries in ge ometry. In the beginning of his mathematical career, Joe was interested in the generalization of symmetrical spaces in the E. Cart an sense. Symmetric spaces, differentiated from other homogeneous manifolds by their geomet rical richness, allows the development of a deep analysis. Geometers have been constantly interested and challenged by the problem of extending the class of symmetric spaces so as to preserve their geometrical and analytical abundance. The name of D'Atri is tied to one of the most successful gen eralizations: Riemann manifolds in which (local) geodesic symmetries are volume-preserving (up to sign). In time, it turned out that the majority of interesting generalizations of symmetrical spaces are D'Atri spaces: natu ral reductive homogeneous spaces, Riemann manifolds whose geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups, etc. The central place in D'Atri's research is occupied by homogeneous bounded domains in en, which are not symmetric. Such domains were discovered by Piatetskii-Shapiro in 1959, and given Joe's strong interest in the generalization of symmetric spaces, it was very natural for him to direct his research along this path. 396 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference 'Topological Methods in Alg~braic Transformation Groups,' which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and related issues in algebraic and analytic geometry. The meeting was well attended, and these Proceedings offer a larger audience the opportunity to benefit from the excellent survey and specialized talks presented. The main topics concerned various as pects of group actions, algebraic quotients, homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. The meeting was made possible by support from Rutgers University and the National Science Foundation. We express our deep appreciation for this support. We also thank Annette Neuen for her assistance with the technical preparation of these Proceedings. 224 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Group actions on trees furnish a unified geometric way of recasting the chapter of combinatorial group theory dealing with free groups, amalgams, and HNN extensions. Some of the principal examples arise from rank one simple Lie groups over a non-archimedean local field acting on their Bruhat Tits trees. In particular this leads to a powerful method for studying lattices in such Lie groups. This monograph extends this approach to the more general investigation of X-lattices G, where X-is a locally finite tree and G is a discrete group of automorphisms of X of finite covolume. These 'tree lattices' are the main object of study. Special attention is given to both parallels and contrasts with the case of Lie groups. Beyond the Lie group connection, the theory has application to combinatorics and number theory. The authors present a coherent survey of the results on uniform tree lattices, and a (previously unpublished) development of the theory of non-uniform tree lattices, including some fundamental and recently proved existence theorems. Non-uniform tree lattices are much more complicated than uniform ones; thus a good deal of attention is given to the construction and study of diverse examples. The fundamental technique is the encoding of tree action in terms of the corresponding quotient 'graphs of groups.'Tree Lattices should be a helpful resource to researcher sin the field, and may also be used for a graduate course on geometric methods in group theory. Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This comprehensive textbook is intended for a two-semester sequence in analysis. The first four chapters present a practical introduction to analysis by using the tools and concepts of calculus. The last five chapters present a first course in analysis. The presentation is clear and concise, allowing students to master the calculus tools that are crucial in understanding analysis. From Calculus to Analysis prepares readers for their first analysis course-important because many undergraduate programs traditionally require such a course. Undergraduates and some advanced high-school seniors will find this text a useful and pleasant experience in the classroom or as a self-study guide. The only prerequisite is a standard calculus course. 260 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As in the case of the two previous volumes published in 1986 and 1997, the purpose of this monograph is to focus the interplay between real (functional) analysis and stochastic analysis show their mutual benefits and advance the subjects. The presentation of each article, given as a chapter, is in a research-expository style covering the respective topics in depth. In fact, most of the details are included so that each work is essentially self contained and thus will be of use both for advanced graduate students and other researchers interested in the areas considered. Moreover, numerous new problems for future research are suggested in each chapter. The presented articles contain a substantial number of new results as well as unified and simplified accounts of previously known ones. A large part of the material cov ered is on stochastic differential equations on various structures, together with some applications. Although Brownian motion plays a key role, (semi-) martingale theory is important for a considerable extent. Moreover, noncommutative analysis and probabil ity have a prominent role in some chapters, with new ideas and results. A more detailed outline of each of the articles appears in the introduction and outline to assist readers in selecting and starting their work. All chapters have been reviewed. 420 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Shanti S. Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us. 504 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The research detailed in this monograph was originally motivated by our interest in control problems involving partial and delay differential equations. Our attempts to apply control theory techniques to such prob lems in several areas of science convinced us that in the need for better and more detailed models of distributed/ continuum processes in biology and mechanics lay a rich, interesting, and challenging class of fundamen tal questions. These questions, which involve science and mathematics, are typical of those arising in inverse or parameter estimation problems. Our efforts on inverse problems for distributed parameter systems, which are infinite dimensional in the most common realizations, began about seven years ago at a time when rapid advances in computing capabilities and availability held promise for significant progress in the development of a practically useful as well as theoretically sound methodology for such problems. Much of the research reported in our presentation was not begun when we outlined the plans for this monograph some years ago. By publishing this monograph now, when only a part of the originally intended topics are covered (see Chapter VII in this respect), we hope to stimulate the research and interest of others in an area of scientific en deavor which has exceeded even our optimistic expectations with respect to excitement, opportunity, and stimulation. The computer revolution alluded to above and the development of new codes allow one to solve rather routinely certain estimation problems that would have been out of the question ten years ago. 332 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The present book is an edition of the manuscripts to the courses 'Numerical Methods I' and 'Numerical Mathematics I and II' which Professor H. Rutishauser held at the E.T.H. in Zurich. The first-named course was newly conceived in the spring semester of 1970, and intended for beginners, while the two others were given repeatedly as elective courses in the sixties. For an understanding of most chapters the funda mentals of linear algebra and calculus suffice. In some places a little complex variable theory is used in addition. However, the reader can get by without any knowledge of functional analysis. The first seven chapters discuss the direct solution of systems of linear equations, the solution of nonlinear systems, least squares prob lems, interpolation by polynomials, numerical quadrature, and approxima tion by Chebyshev series and by Remez' algorithm. The remaining chapters include the treatment of ordinary and partial differential equa tions, the iterative solution of linear equations, and a discussion of eigen value problems. In addition, there is an appendix dealing with the qd algorithm and with an axiomatic treatment of computer arithmetic. 568 pp. Englisch.…
