In 1982 Tsfasman, Vladut and Zink, using algebraic geometry and ideas of Go…ppa, constructed a seqeunce of codes that exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The result was considered sensational. Furthermore, it was surprising to see these unrelated areas of mathematics collaborating. The aim of this course is to give an introduction to coding theory and to sketch the ideas of algebraic geometry that led to the new result. Finally, a number of applications of these methods of algebraic geometry to coding theory are given. Since this is a new area, there are presently no references where one can find a more extensive treatment of all the material. However, both for algebraic geometry and for coding theory excellent textbooks are available. The combination ofthe two subjects can only be found in a number ofsurvey papers. A book by C. Moreno with a complete treatment of this area is in preparation. We hope that these notes will stimulate further research and collaboration of algebraic geometers and coding theorists. It was the…first essen tially multidimensional representation in which the integration takes place over the whole boundary of the domain. This integral representation has a universal 1 kernel (not depending on the form of the domain), like the Cauchy kernel in e . However, in en when n 1, the Bochner-Martinelli kernel is harmonic, but not holomorphic. For a long time, this circumstance prevented the wide application of the Bochner-Martinelli integral in multidimensional complex analysis. Martinelli and Bochner used their representation to prove the theorem of Hartogs (Osgood Brown) on removability of compact singularities of holomorphic functions in en when n 1. In the 1950's and 1960's, only isolated works appeared that studied the boundary behavior of Bochner-Martinelli (type) integrals by analogy with Cauchy (type) integrals. This study was based on the Bochner-Martinelli integral being the sum of a double-layer potential and the tangential derivative of a single-layer potential. Therefore the Bochner-Martinelli integral has a jump that agrees with the integrand, but it behaves like the Cauchy integral under approach to the boundary, that is, somewhat worse than the double-layer potential. Thus, the Bochner-Martinelli integral combines properties of the Cauchy integral and the double-layer potential. 324 pp. Englisch.

During the 1930s, in the work of such mathemati cians as Alon…zo Church, Stephen Kleene, Barkley Rosser and Alfred Tarski, Godel's idea evolved into the concept of a recursive function. Church pro posed the thesis, generally accepted today, that an effective algorithm is the same thing as a procedure whose output is a recursive function of the input (suitably coded as an integer). With these concepts, it became possible to prove that many familiar theories are undecidable (or non-recursive)-i. e. , that there does not exist an effective algorithm (recursive function) which would allow one to determine which sentences belong to the theory. It was clear from the beginning that any theory with a rich enough mathematical content must be undecidable. On the other hand, some theories with a substantial content are decidable. Examples of such decidabLe theories are the theory of Boolean algebras (Tarski [1949]), the theory of Abelian groups (Szmiele~ [1955]), and the theories of elementary arithmetic and geometry (Tarski [1951]' but Tarski discovered these results around 1930). Control and Chaos-it brings back memories of the endless reruns of 'Get Smart' where the good guys worked for Control and the bad guys were associated with Chaos. In keeping with current events, Control and Chaos are no longer adversaries but are now working together. In fact, bringing together workers in the two areas was the focus of the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to bring together experts in dynamical systems theory and control theory, and applications workers in both fields, to focus on the problem of controlling nonlinear and potentially chaotic systems using limited control effort. This involves finding and using orbits in nonlinear systems which can take a system from one region of state space to other regions where we wish to stabilize the system. Control is used to generate useful chaotic trajectories where they do not exist, and to identify and take advantage of useful ones where they do exist. A controller must be able to nudge a system into a proper chaotic orbit and know when to come off that orbit. To obtain high yields, combined nitrogen… has to be supplied as fertilizer. However, the che- cal production of nitrogen fertilizers is very energy consuming and costly. In underdeveloped countries there is in addition the problem of how to get such fertilizer and how to distribute it. Efforts to replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers by other means of nitrogen fertilization are therefore important. Some bacteria have the capability to use molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere. Such nitrogen is thus transformed into a bound form. Responsible for this capability is a gene group they carry, the nif genes, and an enzyme system, they produce, nitrogenase. An example for such bacteria are rhizobia, which grow in symbioses with leguminous plants, and in their root nodules bind molecular nitrogen. The host plant takes advantage of this. Less well known, but being studied with increasing intensity, are the so called Azospirillum bacteria. They too bind molecular nitrogen. But, in contrast to rhizobia, they do not form nodules on the roots of legumes, but live in loose associations with the roots of other plants, for instance maize, wheat, rice or other grain crops. By exploiting the capabilities of these bacteria it can be hoped to find a way for supplying biologically bound nit- gen to grain crops. 152 pp. Englisch.

These essays were delivered as lectures by the authors at the second annual 'C…urrent Issues in Blood Substitute Research and Development - 1995' course sponsored jointly by the Departments of Medicine and Bioengineer ing, University of California, San Diego, the National Institutes of Health (NHLBI), and the U.S. Army on March 30, 31, and April 1, 1995 in San Diego. This course had three goals: to present fundaniental discussions of scientific issues critical to further development of artificial oxygen carriers, to provide academicians a forum to discuss their current research, and to provide the companies involved in developing products the opportunity to update the audience on their progress. The organization owes much to the solicited comments of the attendees of the 1994 course. We would like especially to thank the U.S. Army, particularly through the efforts of COL John Hess, who provided significant funding to make publication of this volume possible. In addition, a number of the participating companies provided additional financial support to offset the costs of the course.
