The programming of MPSs is still the big obstacle, and solving this software problem is sometimes referred to as one of the most challenging tasks of the 1990's. The 1994 working conference on 'Programming Environments for Massively Parallel Systems' was the latest event of the working group WG 10.3 of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) in this field. It succeeded the 1992 conference in Edinburgh on 'Programming Environments for Parallel Computing'. The workshop sessions and review lectures, while intense, provided much new data in the areas defined and provided useful debates on controversial issues, which in some instances still remain unresolved. However, the relaxed, informal atmosphere of the Salamander Bay resort provided the greatest incentive for open discussion, the renewal of old, and establishment of new, friendships, all of which are important aspects of our scientific community. While it was not possible to publish all the papers presented at the Salamander Bay Symposium, I trust that those contained herei n will provide some indication of the overall quality and scope of the meeting. All of them have subsequently been shown to have significant and specific biological activities not only in inflammatory responses but also in other physiological pro cesses. The explosion of research in this area has been an indi cation of the importance of this field but has also meant that it is time for an evaluation of activities of prostaglandins and products of the arachidonate pathway - collectively described as eicosanoids. For this reason the organizers of this conference felt it was timely to bring together workers in the field and critically evaluate some aspects of the role of different eico sanoids in inflammatory responses and the action of the anti inflammatory agents drugs used to modulate or inhibit these responses. The conference held at King's College Hospital Medical School produced lively and constructive discussions. While there are still many complexities to be investigated several important conclusions did emerge. This symposium commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Swiss Association of Parents of Asthmatic and Allergic Children. The incidence of asthma and allergies generally is on the increase and demands everyone's attention, including that of physicians, researchers, allied health professionals and parents. There have been no recent breakthroughs in our understanding of asthma pathogenesis or treatment. However, forms of treatment, pathogenetic insights and public awareness are undergoing rapid changes as our knowledge of atopic diseases increases. For this reason we chose the title 'Update on Childhood Asthma'. The purpose of the papers is to summarize recent research results, to provide an update on the current approach to therapeutic interventions and to alert readers to the psychosomatic aspects of asthma. Whether the state of knowledge has already changed while you are holding this book in your hands is not so much dependent on a delay in publishing but on the speed of appearance of new research results. Fortunately, our ambitious target to edit the proceedings in advance of the conference has been successful. Although the separate character of both domains is reflected by their historical development, the latest research shows that the numerical treatment of Delay Equations leads to various appro ximation and optimization problems. An introductory survey of this circle of problems written by the editors is included at the beginning of the book. Delay Equations have their origin in domains of applications, such as physics, engineering, biology, medicine and economics. They appear in connection with the fundamental problem to analyse a retarded process from the real world, to develop a corresponding mathematical model and to determine the future behavior. Thirty mathematicians attended the conference coming from Germany, West- and Eastern Europe and the United States- more than twenty of them presented a research talk. The lectures about Delay Equations were mainly oriented on the following subjects: single-step, multi-step and spline methods; monotonicity methods for error estimations; asymptotic behavior 10 and periodicity of solutions. The topics of the talks on Approxi mation Theory covered different aspects of approximation by poly nomials, splines and rational functions and their numerical rea lization. As usual in such a situation, it may be tedious to collect all the necessary ingredients. The present book is intended to give the nonspecialist a solid introduction to the recent developments in symplectic and contact geometry. Chapter 1 gives a review of the symplectic group Sp(n,R), sympkctic manifolds, and Hamiltonian systems (last but not least to fix the notations). The 1Iaslov index for closed curves as well as arcs in Sp(n, R) is discussed. This index will be used in chapters 5 and 8. Chapter 2 contains a more detailed account of symplectic manifolds start ing with a proof of the Darboux theorem saying that there are no local in variants in symplectic geometry. The most important examples of symplectic manifolds will be introduced: cotangent spaces and Kahler manifolds. In most cases, these interactions involve and are driven by proteins, which are the main conductors of any life proce…ss within the organism. The physical nature of these interactions is still not well known. This book presents an entirely new approach to analysis of biomolecular in teractions, in particular protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, based on the assumption that these interactions are electromagnetic in nature. This new ap proach is the basis of the Resonant Recognition Model (RRM), which was devel oped over the last 15 years. Certain periodicities within the distribution of energies of delocalised electrons along a protein molecule are crucial to the protein's biological function, i.e. inter action with its target. If protein conductivity were introduced, then charges mov ing through the protein backbone might produce electromagnetic irradiation or ab sorption with spectral characteristics corresponding to energy distribution along the protein. The RRM is capable of calculating these spectral characteristics, which we hypothesized would be in the range of the infrared and visible light. These characteristics were confirmed with frequency characteristics obtained ex perimentally for certain light-induced biological processes. 148 pp. Englisch.

Free radicals form in biological systems through metabolism, but it is also realized that exogenous environmental sources,…such as radiation, food, and drugs, contribute significantly to the generation of free radicals in biological systems. Being reactive species, free radicals are short-lived and do not travel far from cellular targets. Their concentration in biological systems is very low and is difficult to detect directly by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). Indirect methods of reactions of radicals with specific biomolecules are also sufficiently sensitive to detect quantitatively their presence. Thus the response of antioxidant defenses which react with radical species, can serve as an indirect measure that free radicals have been formed. Redox-based antioxidants change their oxidation state and antioxidants become free radicals themselves. Often, however, the antioxidants give rise to more persistent free radicals, sometimes owing to delocalization of the lone electron around ring structures (in vitamin E, ubiquinones, and certain carotenes). Persistent free radicals react only rarely and the precursors often can be regenerated in biological systems. In recent years, it is becoming clearer from biochemical studies on how the major lipophilic antioxidants work. Particular attention has been given to vitamin E and quinones found in animal and plant membranes and in carotenoids, for the protection of membranes in lipoprotein systems. The symposium was an official satellite of the Ixth Interna…tional Congress of Pharmacology (IUPHAR). This volume contains the proceedings from this satellite meeting. The IAIS was constituted in 1988 when representatives of the Inflammation Research Association (IRA), European Workshop on Inflammation (EWI) and British Inflammation Research Association (BIRAs) met at White Haven, Pennsylvania during the Fourth International Conference of the IRA and the group decided that improved communication between inflammation societies could be achieved by establishment of a society. The IAIS would encourage and foster collaboration between the many inflammation societies throughout the world and assist in the establishment of new societies whenever possible. The satellite was a major success thanks to the efforts of the planning committee: Wim van den Berg, the local organizer, Mike Bray, the programme chairman, Rodger McMillan, Greg Harper, Mike Parnham and Kay Brune. In addition, the chairman and presenters ensured the scientific content of the meeting was of a very high standard. Most importantly, the 100 participants from 15 countries made the sessions lively and interactive. The IAIS will hopefully organize additional symposiums in the future. Alan J.
