The aim of this book is to provide structural and civil engineers working in construction and environmental engineering with practical guidelines for counteracting vibration problems. Dynamic actions are considered from the following sources of vibration: - human body motions, - rotating, oscillating and impacting machines, - wind flow, - road traffic, railway traffic and construction work. The main section of the book presents tools that aid in decision-making and in deriving simple solutions to cases of frequently occurring 'normal' vibration problems. Complexer problems and more advanced solutions are also considered. In all cases these guidelines should enable the engineer to decide on appropriate solutions expeditiously. The appendices of the book contain fundamentals essential to the main chapters.

In 1982 Tsfasman, Vladut and Zink, using algebraic geometry and ideas of Go…ppa, constructed a seqeunce of codes that exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The result was considered sensational. Furthermore, it was surprising to see these unrelated areas of mathematics collaborating. The aim of this course is to give an introduction to coding theory and to sketch the ideas of algebraic geometry that led to the new result. Finally, a number of applications of these methods of algebraic geometry to coding theory are given. Since this is a new area, there are presently no references where one can find a more extensive treatment of all the material. However, both for algebraic geometry and for coding theory excellent textbooks are available. The combination ofthe two subjects can only be found in a number ofsurvey papers. A book by C. Moreno with a complete treatment of this area is in preparation. We hope that these notes will stimulate further research and collaboration of algebraic geometers and coding theorists. To obtain high yields, combined nitrogen… has to be supplied as fertilizer. However, the che- cal production of nitrogen fertilizers is very energy consuming and costly. In underdeveloped countries there is in addition the problem of how to get such fertilizer and how to distribute it. Efforts to replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers by other means of nitrogen fertilization are therefore important. Some bacteria have the capability to use molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere. Such nitrogen is thus transformed into a bound form. Responsible for this capability is a gene group they carry, the nif genes, and an enzyme system, they produce, nitrogenase. An example for such bacteria are rhizobia, which grow in symbioses with leguminous plants, and in their root nodules bind molecular nitrogen. The host plant takes advantage of this. Less well known, but being studied with increasing intensity, are the so called Azospirillum bacteria. They too bind molecular nitrogen. But, in contrast to rhizobia, they do not form nodules on the roots of legumes, but live in loose associations with the roots of other plants, for instance maize, wheat, rice or other grain crops. By exploiting the capabilities of these bacteria it can be hoped to find a way for supplying biologically bound nit- gen to grain crops. 152 pp. Englisch.

It was the…first essen tially multidimensional representation in which the integration takes place over the whole boundary of the domain. This integral representation has a universal 1 kernel (not depending on the form of the domain), like the Cauchy kernel in e . However, in en when n 1, the Bochner-Martinelli kernel is harmonic, but not holomorphic. For a long time, this circumstance prevented the wide application of the Bochner-Martinelli integral in multidimensional complex analysis. Martinelli and Bochner used their representation to prove the theorem of Hartogs (Osgood Brown) on removability of compact singularities of holomorphic functions in en when n 1. In the 1950's and 1960's, only isolated works appeared that studied the boundary behavior of Bochner-Martinelli (type) integrals by analogy with Cauchy (type) integrals. This study was based on the Bochner-Martinelli integral being the sum of a double-layer potential and the tangential derivative of a single-layer potential. Therefore the Bochner-Martinelli integral has a jump that agrees with the integrand, but it behaves like the Cauchy integral under approach to the boundary, that is, somewhat worse than the double-layer potential. Thus, the Bochner-Martinelli integral combines properties of the Cauchy integral and the double-layer potential. 324 pp. Englisch.

It was hoped that the Congress would constitute a symbol of the development of the commu…nity of European nations. More than 1,300 persons attended the Congress. The purpose of the Congress was twofold. On the one hand, there was a scientific facet which consisted of forty-nine invited mathematical lectures that were intended to establish the state of the art in the various branches of pure and applied mathematics. This scientific facet also included poster sessions where participants had the opportunity of presenting their work. Furthermore, twenty-four specialized meetings were held before and after the Congress. The second facet of the Congress was more original. It consisted of six teen round tables whose aim was to review the prospects for the interactions of mathematics, not only with other sciences, but also with society and in particular with education, European policy and industry. In connection with this second goal, the Congress also succeeded in bring ing mathematics to a broader public. In addition to the round tables specific ally devoted to this question, there was a mini-festival of mathematical films and two mathematical exhibits. There were keen discussions about the intense bio logical changes which occur about the complex temporomandibular joint after excessive use or injury. These papers were followed by talks outlining the experiences of those involved in the imaging and non-surgical and surgical management of patients who were enduring such changes. The pitch and interchange of opinions and evidence as to why a disc or its position could effect little or profound disturbance of the temporomandibular apparatus were en lightening to each who listened - and thought. And even more sobering was to hear the report of a well-documented, multiple decades long study of a large number of patients with osteoarthrosis and internal derangement which defined a natural course and eventual end of the disease. By exploitation of these two properties, it is hoped to develop inoculation pro cedures that result in yield increases in agriculture, in par ticular in soils poor in nitrogen. The reports on the first afternoon focussed, as a result of the Bayreuth research interest, on the genetic basis and the regulation of nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum. In the philosophical part of his work Finsler de…velops his approach to the paradoxes, his attitude toward formalized theories and his defense of Platonism in mathematics. He insisted on the existence of a conceptual realm within mathematics that transcends formal systems. From the foundational point of view, Finsler's set theory contains a strengthened criterion for set identity and a coinductive specification of the universe of sets. The notion of the class of circle free sets introduced by Finsler is potentially a very fertile one although not very widespread today. Combinatorially, Finsler considers sets as generalized numbers to which one may apply arithmetical techniques. The introduction to this third section of the book extends Finsler's theory to non-well-founded sets. The present volume makes Finsler's papers on set theory accessible at long last to a wider group of mathematicians, philosophers and historians of science. To obtain high yields, combined nitrogen has… to be supplied as fertilizer. However, the che- cal production of nitrogen fertilizers is very energy consuming and costly. In underdeveloped countries there is in addition the problem of how to get such fertilizer and how to distribute it. Efforts to replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers by other means of nitrogen fertilization are therefore important. Some bacteria have the capability to use molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere. Such nitrogen is thus transformed into a bound form. Responsible for this capability is a gene group they carry, the nif genes, and an enzyme system, they produce, nitrogenase. An example for such bacteria are rhizobia, which grow in symbioses with leguminous plants, and in their root nodules bind molecular nitrogen. The host plant takes advantage of this. Less well known, but being studied with increasing intensity, are the so called Azospirillum bacteria. They too bind molecular nitrogen. But, in contrast to rhizobia, they do not form nodules on the roots of legumes, but live in loose associations with the roots of other plants, for instance maize, wheat, rice or other grain crops. This is particularly true for animal systems where an impressive amount of literature is appearing and where many importa…nt pathways have been clarified at a molecular level. In the elucidation of the functions of single components of a given pathway, gene cloning has played a major role and opened the field to the genetic engineering of these complex systems. At variance with this situation, plant systems are less well elucidated, even if in recent years exciting research of developments have been initiated especially with the view toward the most promising role plants in biotechnology. Recent studies have elucidated some of the events involved in the perception of the plant hormone signals and some steps concerning its transduction. Only for three of the five hormones in plants, namely auxin, ethylene and cytokinins, have specific receptors been isolated. The use of classical molecular approaches, together with the more recently isolated mutants, have produced crucial information on receptors and shed light on possible transduction pathways. As in the case of red light, more than one pathway can be triggered by one specific signal. Many systems involved in animal signaling are now shown to be present also in plants, and in view of the fast progress in this area, it will be possible in the near future to fully describe the content of the 'black boxes' in the reaction chain specifically triggered by a signal. 183 pp. Englisch.

Why: a workshop on trees Two main reasons motivated this workshop. First, the current plethora of tree representations in branchi…ng processes which has be come obvious by the Minneapolis IMA Congress Classica] and Modern Branching Processes in 1994. But this would not have been sufficient to organize an 'n-th' congress on branching processes. Secondly, regular discussions with researchers in algebra and computing sciences at the University of Versailles and at INRIA (lnstitut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) convinced us it would be fruitful to offer the workers in these different fields the opportunity to exchange their points of view on the subject. The organizers being probabilists, a large part of the meeting (two sessions) was devoted t~ probability theor:y (not only branching processes). Nevertheless, the other three sessions focused on algorithms, on ultrametric and combinatorial aspects of trees and on disordered systems. Most papers in this volume are both of high level and of pedagogical interest. They are intended for a large public, including graduate students looking for an initiation to tree structures. The papers have been grouped into four sections: - disordered systems, - probability and trees, - large deviations, - ultrametric and algebraic aspects of trees. Some of the speakers are, unfortunately, not represented in this volume. 158 pp. Französisch, Englisch.
