Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -'Fractals in Biology and Medicine' explores the potential of fractal geometry for describing and understanding biological organisms, their development and growth as well as their structural design and functional properties. It extends these notions to assess changes associated with disease in the hope to contribute to the understanding of pathogenetic processes in medicine. The book is the first comprehensive presentation of the importance of the new concept of fractal geometry for biological and medical sciences. It collates in a logical sequence extended papers based on invited lectures and free communications presented at a symposium in Ascona, Switzerland, attended by leading scientists in this field, among them the originator of fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot. 'Fractals in Biology and Medicine' begins by asking how the theoretical construct of fractal geometry can be applied to biomedical sciences and then addresses the role of fractals in the design and morphogenesis of biological organisms as well as in molecular and cell biology. The consideration of fractal structure in understanding metabolic functions and pathological changes is a particularly promising avenue for future research. 397 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -One of the key concerns in modern control theory is the design of steering strategies. The implementation of such strategies is done by a regulator. Presented here is a self-contained introduction to the mathematical background of this type of regulator design. The topics selected address the matter of greatest interest to the control community, at present, namely, when the design objective is the reduction of the influence of exogeneous disturbances upon the output of the system. In a first scenario the disturbance signal is regarded as a deterministic time series with known dynamics but unknown parameters. The design objective is then the asymptotic disturbance compensation. In a second scenario, no information about the disturbance signal is available apart from some bounds. Here, in an H-approach, control strategies are worked out which will prove efficient for all such disturbances. The intention of this book is to present ideas and methods on such a level that the beginning graduate student will be able to follow current research. New results are included, especially for nonlinear control systems, and as a service to the reader, an extensive appendix presents topics from linear algebra, invariant manifolds and calculus of variations, information which is hardly to be found in standard textbooks. Contents: Introduction - The problem of output regulation - Introduction - Problem statement - Output regulation via full information - Output regulation via full error feedback - A particular case - Well-posedness and robustness - The construction of a robust regulator - Disturbance attenuation via H-methods - Introduction - Problem statement - A characterization of the L2-gain of a linear system - Disturbance attenuation via full information - Disturbance attenuation via measured feedback - Full information regulators - Problem statement - Time-dependent control strategies - Examples - Time-independent control strategies- The local case - Nonlinear observers - Problem statement - Time-dependent observers - Error feedback regulators - Examples - Nonlinear H-techniques - Introduction - Construction of the saddle-point - The local scenario - Disturbance attenuation via linearization - Matrix equations - Linear matrix equations - Algebraic Riccati equations - Invariant manifolds - Existence theorem - Outflowing manifolds - Asymptotic phase - Convergence for T - A special case - Dichotomies and Lyapunov functions - Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs equation - Introduction - Method of characteristics - The equation of Isaacs - The Hamiltonian version of Isaacs' equation - Bibliography 168 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The controversy between the wave theory and the emission theory of light early in the nineteenth century has been a subject of numerous studies. Yet many is sues remain unclear, in particular, the reasons for rejecting Young's theory of light. It appears that further progress in the field requires a better grasp of the overall situation in optics and related subjects at the time and a more thorough study of every factor suggested to be of importance for the dispute. This book is intended to be a step in this direction. It examines the impact of the concept of interference of light on the development of the early nineteenth century optics in general, and the theory of light, in particular. This is not a his tory of the wave theory of light, nor is it a history of the debate on the nature of light in general: it covers only that part of the controversy which involved the concept of interference. Although the book deals with a number of scientists, scientific institutions, and journals, its main character is a scientific concept, the principle of interference. While discussing the reasons for accepting or rejecting this concept I have primarily focused on scientific factors, although in some cases the human factor is examined as well. The book is a revised Ph. D. dissertation (University of Minnesota, 1984) writ ten under Alan E. Shapiro. 271 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The school, the book This book is based on lectures given by the authors of the various chapters in a three week long CIMPA summer school, held in Sophia-Antipolis (near Nice) in July 1992. The first week was devoted to the basics of symplectic and Riemannian geometry (Banyaga, Audin, Lafontaine, Gauduchon), the second was the technical one (Pansu, Muller, Duval, Lalonde and Sikorav). The final week saw the conclusion ofthe school (mainly McDuffand Polterovich, with complementary lectures by Lafontaine, Audin and Sikorav). Globally, the chapters here reflect what happened there. Locally, we have tried to reorganise some ofthe material to make the book more coherent. Hence, for instance, the collective (Audin, Lalonde, Polterovich) chapter on Lagrangian submanifolds and the appendices added to some of the chapters. Duval was not able to write up his lectures, so that genuine complex analysis will not appear in the book, although it is a very current tool in symplectic and contact geometry (and conversely). Hamiltonian systems and variational methods were the subject of some of Sikorav's talks, which he also was not able to write up. On the other hand, F. Labourie, who could not be at the school, wrote a chapter on pseudo-holomorphic curves in Riemannian geometry. 331 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many physical problems are meaningfully formulated in a cylindrical domain. When the size of the cylinder goes to infinity, the solutions, under certain symmetry conditions, are expected to be identical in every cross-section of the domain. The proof of this, however, is sometimes difficult and almost never given in the literature. The present book partially fills this gap by providing proofs of the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to various important cases of linear and nonlinear problems in the theory of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The book is a valuable resource for graduates and researchers in applied mathematics and for engineers. Many results presented here are original and have not been published elsewhere. They will motivate and enable the reader to apply the theory to other problems in partial differential equations. 192 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Stroke is a leading cause of death in developed countries. However, current therapeutic strategies for stroke have been largelyunsuccessful. One possible explanation is that research andpharmacological management have focused on very early events in brainischemia. New research has shown that brain ischemia and trauma elicitstrong inflammatory reactions driven by both external and brain cells. The recognition of inflammation as a fundamental response to brainischemia provides novel opportunities for new anti-inflammatorytherapies.For the first time, an international body of researchers presents thelatest findings about the cellular and humoral aspects of immune andinflammatory reactions in the brain. The work may have an impact on thetreatment of neuroinjuries and ancillary brain diseases, and increasethe understanding of the roles infections and immune reactions play inthe brain milieu. 376 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In several proofs from the theory of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, an essential contribution comes from the Jordan canonical structure of linear maps acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces. On the other hand, there exist classical results concerning Lie algebras which advise us to use infinite-dimensional vector spaces as well. For example, the classical Lie Theorem asserts that all finite-dimensional irreducible representations of solvable Lie algebras are one-dimensional. Hence, from this point of view, the solvable Lie algebras cannot be distinguished from one another, that is, they cannot be classified. Even this example alone urges the infinite-dimensional vector spaces to appear on the stage. But the structure of linear maps on such a space is too little understood; for these linear maps one cannot speak about something like the Jordan canonical structure of matrices. Fortunately there exists a large class of linear maps on vector spaces of arbi trary dimension, having some common features with the matrices. We mean the bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Certain types of bounded operators (such as the Dunford spectral, Foiadecomposable, scalar generalized or Colojoara spectral generalized operators) actually even enjoy a kind of Jordan decomposition theorem. One of the aims of the present book is to expound the most important results obtained until now by using bounded operators in the study of Lie algebras. 232 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The collection of papers in this volume represents recent advances in the under standing of the geometry and topology of singularities. The book covers a broad range of topics which are in the focus of contemporary singularity theory. Its idea emerged during two Singularities workshops held at the University of Lille (USTL) in 1999 and 2000. Due to the breadth of singularity theory, a single volume can hardly give the complete picture of today's progress. Nevertheless, this collection of papers provides a good snapshot of what is the state of affairs in the field, at the turn of the century. Several papers deal with global aspects of singularity theory. Classification of fam ilies of plane curves with prescribed singularities were among the first problems in algebraic geometry. Classification of plane cubics was known to Newton and classification of quartics was achieved by Klein at the end of the 19th century. The problem of classification of curves of higher degrees was addressed in numerous works after that. In the paper by Artal, Carmona and Cogolludo, the authors de scribe irreducible sextic curves having a singular point of type An (n 15) and a large (Le. , :::: 18) sum of Milnor numbers of other singularities. They have discov ered many interesting properties of these families. In particular they have found new examples of so-called Zariski pairs, i. e. 260 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These proceedings contain the main topics and results presented at the Fourth International Conference on Multivariate Approximation. The meeting took place during the week of September 24-29, 2000 at the now well-known 'Haus Bommerholz', the guest-house of the University of Dortmund. It hosted 43 participants from 16 countries, and the program included 9 invited one-hour lectures, 21 contributed talks, and two problem sessions. The articles collected here are carefully peer-refereed and suitably edited for publication. Following the tradition of this series of conferences, the meeting was aimed at advancing selected topics of Multivariate Approximation Theory. These include approximation on compact sets (such as spheres, balls, or compact ho mogeneous manifolds), spherical designs and energy functionals, interpolation by radial basis functions and by splines, frame theory and Gabor analysis, re finable function systems and subdivision, properties of harmonic, polyharmonic and blending functions, sampling and data compression, among others. The editors would like to express their thanks to all who have given their sup port to the conference, and to the preparation of this book. In particular, our thanks go to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for their funding of the con ference, to the University of Dortmund, and to the staff of Haus Bommerholz for their help running the conference, and to the Universities of Dortmund and Duisburg for the financial support of this proceedings volume. 268 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research into inflammatory mechanisms that may cause damage to the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain has now been ongoing for nearly two decades. Some two dozen clinical studies have strongly suggested that conventional anti-inflammatory drugs may be useful to delay the onset or slow the progression of the disorder. Moreover, virtually all the major systems of the innate immune response appear to be present, and most are upregulated, in pathologically-vulnerable regions of the AD brain. These new findings are described in this volume - first in overview form, followed by chapters on topics of special interest. In many ways, to understand AD brain inflammation, one need only review a text on peripheral inflammation biology, leaving out the chapters on humoral medi ators and substituting microglia for macrophages. In several other key respects, however, AD brain inflammation is unique, due primarily to idiosyncratic interac tions of inflammatory mediators and mechanisms with classical AD pathology: amyloid ~ peptide(A~) deposits and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). For this reason, some key concepts about the inflammation that occurs in AD may warrant discus sion in preparation for the more detailed chapters that follow. 284 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Three-dimensional topology includes two vast domains: the study of geometric structures on 3-manifolds and the study of topological invariants of 3-manifolds, knots, etc. This book belongs to the second domain. We shall study an invariant called the maximal abelian torsion and denoted T. It is defined for a compact smooth (or piecewise-linear) manifold of any dimension and, more generally, for an arbitrary finite CW-complex X. The torsion T(X) is an element of a certain extension of the group ring Z[Hl(X)]. The torsion T can be naturally considered in the framework of simple homotopy theory. In particular, it is invariant under simple homotopy equivalences and can distinguish homotopy equivalent but non homeomorphic CW-spaces and manifolds, for instance, lens spaces. The torsion T can be used also to distinguish orientations and so-called Euler structures. Our interest in the torsion T is due to a particular role which it plays in three-dimensional topology. First of all, it is intimately related to a number of fundamental topological invariants of 3-manifolds. The torsion T(M) of a closed oriented 3-manifold M dominates (determines) the first elementary ideal of 7fl (M) and the Alexander polynomial of 7fl (M). The torsion T(M) is closely related to the cohomology rings of M with coefficients in Z and ZjrZ (r ;::: 2). It is also related to the linking form on Tors Hi (M), to the Massey products in the cohomology of M, and to the Thurston norm on H2(M). 212 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Everybody having even the slightest interest in analytical mechanics remembers having met there the Poisson bracket of two functions of 2n variables (pi, qi) f g ~(8f8g 8 8 ) (0.1) {f,g} = L. ~[ji - [ji~ , ;=1 p, q q p, and the fundamental role it plays in that field. In modern works, this bracket is derived from a symplectic structure, and it appears as one of the main in gredients of symplectic manifolds. In fact, it can even be taken as the defining clement of the structure (e.g., [TIl]). But, the study of some mechanical sys tems, particularly systems with symmetry groups or constraints, may lead to more general Poisson brackets. Therefore, it was natural to define a mathematical structure where the notion of a Poisson bracket would be the primary notion of the theory, and, from this viewpoint, such a theory has been developed since the early 19708, by A. Lichnerowicz, A. Weinstein, and many other authors (see the references at the end of the book). But, it has been remarked by Weinstein [We3] that, in fact, the theory can be traced back to S. Lie himself [Lie]. 206 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The theory of Laplace transformation is an important part of the mathematical background required for engineers, physicists and mathematicians. Laplace transformation methods provide easy and effective techniques for solving many problems arising in various fields of science and engineering, especially for solving differential equations. What the Laplace transformation does in the field of differential equations, the z-transformation achieves for difference equations. The two theories are parallel and have many analogies. Laplace and z transformations are also referred to as operational calculus, but this notion is also used in a more restricted sense to denote the operational calculus of Mikusinski. This book does not use the operational calculus of Mikusinski, whose approach is based on abstract algebra and is not readily accessible to engineers and scientists. The symbolic computation capability of Mathematica can now be used in favor of the Laplace and z-transformations. The firstversion of the Mathematica Package LaplaceAndzTransforrns developed by the author appeared ten years ago. The Package computes not only Laplace and z-transforms but also includes many routines from various domains of applications. Upon loading the Package, about one hundred and fifty new commands are added to the built-in commands of Mathematica. The code is placed in front of the already built-in code of Laplace and z-transformations of Mathematica so that built-in functions not covered by the Package remain available. The Package substantially enhances the Laplace and z-transformation facilities of Mathematica. The book is mainly designed for readers working in the field of applications. 516 pp. Englisch.

Free boundary problems form a scientific area which attracts attention of many specialists in mathematics and mechanics. Increasing interest in the field has given rise to the 'International Conferences on Free Boundary Problems and Their Applications' which have convened, since the 1980s, in such countries as England, the United states, Italy, France and Germany. This book comprises the papers presented at the Interna tional Conference 'Free Boundary Problems in Continuum Mechanics', organized by the Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics, Russian Academy of Sciences, July 15-19, 1991, Novosibirsk, Russia. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When this book was first published (in Russian), it proved to become the fountainhead of a major stream of important papers in mathematics, physics and even chemistry; indeed, it formed the basis of new methodology and opened new directions for research. The present English edition includes new examples of applications to physics, hitherto unpublished or available only in Russian. Its central mathematical idea is to use topological methods to analyze isotropic invariant manifolds in order to obtain asymptotic series of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the multi-dimensional Schrödinger equation, and also to take into account the so-called tunnel effects. Finite-dimensional linear theory is reviewed in detail. Infinite-dimensional linear theory and its applications to quantum statistics and quantum field theory, as well as the nonlinear theory (involving instantons), will be considered in a second volume. 304 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These notes are based on lectures given at the University of Virginia over the past twenty years. They may be viewed as a course in function theory for nonspecialists. Chapters 1-6 give the function-theoretic background to Hardy Classes and Operator Theory, Oxford Mathematical Monographs, Oxford University Press, New York, 1985. These chapters were written first, and they were origi nally intended to be a part of that book. Half-plane function theory continues to be useful for applications and is a focal point in our account (Chapters 5 and 6). The theory of Hardy and Nevanlinna classes is derived from proper ties of harmonic majorants of subharmonic functions (Chapters 3 and 4). A selfcontained treatment of harmonic and subharmonic functions is included (Chapters 1 and 2). Chapters 7-9 present concepts from the theory of univalent functions and Loewner families leading to proofs of the Bieberbach, Robertson, and Milin conjectures. Their purpose is to make the work of de Branges accessible to students of operator theory. These chapters are by the second author. There is a high degree of independence in the chapters, allowing the material to be used in a variety of ways. For example, Chapters 5-6 can be studied alone by readers familiar with function theory on the unit disk. Chapters 7-9 have been used as the basis for a one-semester topics course. 250 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The English edition differs only slightly from the Russian original. The main struc tural difference is that all the material on the theory of finite noncooperative games has been collected in Chapter 2, with renumbering of the material of the remain ing chapters. New sections have been added in this chapter: devoted to general questions of equilibrium theory in nondegenerate games, subsections 3.9-3.17, by N.N. Vorob'ev, Jr.; and 4, by A.G. Chernyakov; and 5, by N.N. Vorob'ev, Jr., on the computational complexity of the process of finding equilibrium points in finite games. It should also be mentioned that subsections 3.12-3.14 in Chapter 1 were written by E.B. Yanovskaya especially for the Russian edition. The author regrets that the present edition does not reflect the important game-theoretical achievements presented in the splendid monographs by E. van Damme (on the refinement of equilibrium principles for finite games), as well as those by J.e. Harsanyi and R. Selten, and by W. Giith and B. Kalkofen (on equilibrium selection). When the Russian edition was being written, these direc tions in game theory had not yet attained their final form, which appeared only in quite recent monographs; the present author has had to resist the temptation of attempting to produce an elementary exposition of the new theories for the English edition; readers of this edition will find only brief mention of the new material. 496 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fourth European Multigrid Conference, held in Amsterdam, July 6-9,1993. There were 78 registered participants from 14 different countries, and 56 presentations were given. The preceding conferences in this series were held in Cologne (1981, 1985) and in Bonn (1990). Also at the other side of the Atlantic special multigrid conferences are held regularly, at intervals of two years, always in Copper Mountain, Colorado, US. The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods took place in April, 1993. Circumstances prevented us from putting a larger time interval between the Copper and Amsterdam meetings. The next European meeting is planned in 1996, a year later than the next Copper Meeting. When the first multigrid conference was held in 1981 there was no doubt about the usefulness of a conference dedicated specially to multigrid, because multigrid was a new and relatively unexplored subject, still in a pioneering stage, and pursued by specialists. The past twenty years have shown a rapid growth in theoretical understanding, useful applications and widespread acceptance of multi grid in the applied disciplines. Hence, one might ask whether there is still a need today for conferences specially dedicated to multigrid. The general consensus is that the answer is affirmative. New issues have arisen that are best addressed or need also be addressed from a special multigrid point of view. 358 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A set in complex Euclidean space is called C-convex if all its intersections with complex lines are contractible, and it is said to be linearly convex if its complement is a union of complex hyperplanes. These notions are intermediates between ordinary geometric convexity and pseudoconvexity. Their importance was first manifested in the pioneering work of André Martineau from about forty years ago. Since then a large number of new related results have been obtained by many different mathematicians. The present book puts the modern theory of complex linear convexity on a solid footing, and gives a thorough and up-to-date survey of its current status. Applications include the Fantappié transformation of analytic functionals, integral representation formulas, polynomial interpolation, and solutions to linear partial differential equations. 180 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The true history of physics can only be read in the life stories of those who made its progress possible. Matvei Bronstein was one of those for whom the vast territory of theoretical physics was as familiar as his own home: he worked in cosmology, nuclear physics, gravitation, semiconductors, atmospheric physics, quantum electrodynamics, astro physics and the relativistic quantum theory. Everyone who knew him was struck by his wide knowledge, far beyond the limits of his trade. This partly explains why his life was closely intertwined with the social, historical and scientific context of his time. One might doubt that during his short life Bronstein could have made truly weighty contributions to science and have become, in a sense, a symbol ofhis time. Unlike mathematicians and poets, physicists reach the peak oftheir careers after the age of thirty. His thirty years of life, however, proved enough to secure him a place in theGreaterSovietEncyclopedia. In 1967, in describing the first generation of physicists educated after the 1917 revolution, Igor Tamm referred to Bronstein as 'an exceptionally brilliant and promising' theoretician [268]. 208 pp. Englisch.

Most of them are directly related to lectures presented at the Inter national Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held at the University of Groningen (IWOTA-98) in Groningen, the Netherlands, from June 30-July 3, 1998. The workshop was attended by 97 mathematicians-of which 12 were PhD or postdoctoral students-from 19 countries. The program consisted of 19 plenary lectures of 40 minutes and 72 lectures of 30 minutes in 4 parallell sessions. The present volume reflects the wide range and rich variety of topics presented and discussed at the workshop. The papers deal with operator polynomials and analytic operator functions, with spectral problems of (partial) differential oper ators and related operator matrices, with interpolation, completion and extension problems, with commutant lifting and dilation, with Ricatti equations and real ization problems, with scattering theory, with problems from harmonic analysis, and with topics in the theory of reproducing kernel spaces and of spaces with an indefinite metric. All papers underwent the usual refereeing process. 558 pp. Englisch.
