Neuware - A four-volume study of the inter-relation between the theological teaching of Islam and that of the Christian Fathers and of mediaeval theologians. A ground-breaking four-volume study of the inter-relation between the theological teaching of Islam and the theological content in the teaching of the Christian Fathers and of medieval theologians. The first two volumes contain a preparatory historical survey down to the close of Christian ascendancy in the Near East, presenting the student with a complete view of the whole theological position as it was at the end of the period. The second two volumes then comprise a study of the subsequent medieval developments.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A comprehensive narrative history of the various attempts to plant and develop Christianity in Africa from early times to the 20th century. A great four-volume history presenting in comprehensive perspective, within the limits of a single narrative, the various attempts to plant and develop Christianity in Africa. The method of presentation is chronological rather than regional, taking the whole story forward stage by stage rather than dealing completely with one region at a time. As Groves shows in his continental survey, Christianity is now in the midst of its third great attempt to occupy Africa. Volume I (to 1840) deals with the land and its people; Christianity in the Apostolic Age; the early church in North Africa; Islam; slavery; the formation of Missionary Societies and the arrival of David Livingstone.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - two-volume study in the strategy of Christian evangelism as developed by two of its greatest exponents, set in the framework of biographical studies. Volume I covers the life and thought of Blaise Pascal, while Volume II covers the life and thought of Sen Kierkegaard, each volume standing in their own right as scholarly contributions to the literature of their respective subjects. Although far separated in time and tradition, Pascal and Kierkegaard both insisted that self-complacent humanity needs first to be disturbed, and then comforted, by the Gospel. Most of the book is occupied by a thorough review of the lives and works of the two men, in such a way as to ring out their significant place in the spiritual history of modern Europe. But the author's purpose throughout is not merely biographical. He goes on to compare the conception and execution of their evangelistic tasks in a way which brings out the remarkable consensus between them; and in an epilogue he draws conclusions relating this historical study to the tasks and methods of modern evangelism.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The last and most important work of the 17th-century mystic, his wide-ranging interpretation of Genesis and the nature of mystical experience. Boehme was born in 1575. He received little if any formal education and was apprenticed to a shoemaker at Goerlitz in Saxony. From an early age he seems to have been devoted to the study of the Bible as well as having a growing, inner, sense of the reality of God. Walking one day in the fields, when he was twenty-five years old, the mystery of creation was suddenly opened to him, and 'in a quarter of an hour I saw and knew more than if I had been many years at the university . and thereupon I turned my heart to praise God for it.' He puzzled as to why such revelations should be given to him, who sought only the love of God. Ten years later he began to record what he received, and thus was born The Aurora, his first book, finished in 1612. At once his work found both friends and enemies. To the struggles of the former to understand him, we owe the gradual development of his capacity to convey and express more and more of that which he had received. Persecution by the Primate of Goerlitz made him leave home and settle in Dresden, where he died in 1624. Written in 1623, when his powers of expression had developed to their full, Mysterium Magnum is central to his work. Taking the form of an interpretation of Genesis, it outstrips its apparent confines, explaining the popularity of his work among followers as varied as Hegel, Law, Blake and Berdyaev. From the first sentence it leads to the heart of the experience of all mystics: 'When we consider the visible world with its essence, and consider the life of the creatures, then we find therein the likeness of the invisible spiritual world, which is hidden in the visible world as the soul in the body; and we see thereby that the hidden God is nigh unto all and, through all, and yet wholly bidden to the visible essence.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The background to collecting military medals is inseparable from a study of history. The earliest British medals, as befits a nation for so long reliant upon naval strength for its independence, were issued to the Navy, beginning with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The first true campaign medals awarded to the Army followed the Battle of Waterloo, although many had been issued privately and unofficially before this. As one would expect for a country like Britain, with an outstanding imperial history dating to modern times, a vast field of military medals covering service in Africa, India, and China awaits the attention of the collector. There are, too, the collections relating to major wars, including the Crimean War, Boer War and the two World Wars. Colin Narbeth describes the medals awarded, and the actions which gave rise to special bars, ribbons and stars. Orders and decorations, including the Victoria Cross and the George Cross, both awarded for extreme valor, are described as are the naming of medals and display. As well as this wealth of background information, the author also details the aims to which a new collector should aspire, and discusses the pitfalls to guard against, including the problem of identification of forgeries. The volume is illustrated with numerous photographs selected by the author.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The great Reformer's sermons on Isaiah 53, seen as one of the most important prefigurings of the suffering of Christ for the people of God. Originally preached as a series, these seven sermons concerning the critical chapters of the Book Isaiah, demonstrate some of Calvin's most profound thoughts. Christian theologians from the time of the Early Church have seen Isaiah 53 as the most important prefiguring of the suffering of Christ for the people of God, and Calvin's sermons bring out the theological significance of this key chapter for Christians. Calvin began to preach on Isaiah in 1556, and to aid with the comprehension of the text, each sermon is preceded by an abridgement of the relevant passage from the 1559 commentary. The book of Isaiah is one of the three longest books of the Bible and quoted more by Jesus and New Testament prophets than any other Book. It has remained an important and influential text and is as relevant for Christians today as it has been throughout the centuries. Not only does this book illuminate the more difficult elements of the text, but it is done so by one of the greatest Protestant theologians, and is ably translated by T.L.H. Parker.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Studies in the relationship between spirit and tradition in the bible, combining the insights of Orthodox theology with Western biblical scholarship. How deeply is new revelation rooted in and bound by old revelation, and how far does the old determine or contain the newness of the new How does the new grow old, how is the old renewed, and what is the pattern - if any - of this process In this study of the similarities and, equally important, the differences between older and more novel revelation in the Bible, Englezakis analyses these questions and indicates some of the ways in which answers may be found. A wide-ranging study which combines much original thought and sound scholarship with a deep spirituality, New and Old in God's Revelation reflects one of the rare encounters of western Biblical scholarship with eastern Christianity.

The study underlines the questions over the authenticity of the Gospel references to Jesus as the Son of Man and how the early church understood the concept.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book is a close examination of Chinese traditions concerning the ancient Chinese institution known as the Ming T'ang, rendered in the title as the 'Hall of Light', and the sacrificial rituals connected with it. Soothill does not offer a mere summary of the Chinese accounts of the Ming T'ang but an interpretation of those in the light of comparative anthropology and of the history of ancient astronomy. This is the culmination of the life-long study and research on China of a leading British sinologist, The Hall of Light illuminates traditional Chinese ideas about monarchy, religion, worship, ritual, sacrifices, customs, and all aspects of early Chinese culture, which have influenced the thought and behaviour of the Chinese for well over two millennia. This is a study that will be of value to sinologues, anthropologists, and students of comparative astronomy and religion, as well as anyone with an interest in Chinese tradition and thought.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A study of the role of miracles in the Bible and of how changing concepts of faith and of revelation have altered the understanding of the miraculous. An important analysis of the theological views on miracle and revelation in the period from the disintegration of the medieval worldview to the twentieth century. The author discusses the authenticity of revelation, its origins, and its importance throughout this period. He discusses the criticisms levied at revelation in a world dominated by scientific study and logic, and traces the developments and progress of the arguments of its adherents. The author illuminates the theories of the English Deists and their development of modern rationalism, which was to be championed during the Restoration when cynical opinion called for Christianity to be 'reasonable' with plain theological arguments. In response, the men behind the Scientific Renaissance argued that the structure of nature as they now perceived it only supported evidence of a divine being, which injected natural theology with a new lease of life. Lawton establishes the conflict between science and religion early on in this book. He explores the profound effect that these arguments had on the perception of revelation, miracles, and other aspects of Christianity, which relied heavily on faith and were also reappraised unfavourably during this period. He also demonstrates that with regard to life, and revelation in particular, it is a spiritual, not logical response, which is ultimately of value. This book is thoughtfully constructed, and will appeal to scientists and theologians alike, in addition to anyone with an interest in Christian debate.

Orr, whose grasp of the literature was unequalled, saw how doctrine had developed as a reaction to some particular dispute in each era. The book also describes the relationship between the development of doctrinal ideas and the spread of Christianity.
