Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. [PHILOSOPHY]. Willard Van Orman Quine (1908-2000). "The Time of My Life: An Autobiography." Cambridge, MA: Bradford Books, The MIT Press. Printed by Halliday Lithograph in the USA, 1985. English language. Hardcover with purple cloth boards with white titling on spine in glossy pictorial dust jacket. Nonfiction autobiography about the philosopher Quine in eighty-three chapters with preface, indices, and black-and-white illustrations. 9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches. 37 oz. xiv, 500 pp. Small blue dot on inside back board. Dust jacket with light leeching, wear, creasing, and chipping. Text clean. Near Fine in Good jacket. ISBN: 0262170035. "Willard Van Orman Quine sets out to spin the yarn of his life so far. And it is a gift indeed to see one of the world's most famous philosophers as no one else has seen him before. To catch an intimate glimpse of his seminal and controversial theories of philosophy, logic, and language as they evolved, and to hear his warm and often amusing comments on famous contemporary philosophers. From his beginnings in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1900s, Quine takes us on a tour of over one hundred countries over three-quarters of a century, including close observations of the Depression and two world wars. Far from a philosophical tract, it is an ebullient, folksy account of a richly varied and rounded life. When he does dip into philosophy, it is generally of the armchair sort, and laced with a gentle good humor.".

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Third Printng 2002. 268 Pages Indexed. Words, Thoughts, and Theories articulates and defends the "theory theory" of cognitive and semantic development, the idea that infants and young children, like scientists, learn about the world by forming and revising theories, a view of the origins of knowledge and meaning that has broad implications for cognitive science.Gopnik and Meltzoff interweave philosophical arguments and empirical data from their own and other's research. Both the philosophy and the psychology, the arguments and the data, address the same fundamental epistemological question: How do we come to understand the world around us? Recently, the theory theory has led to much interesting research. However, this is the first book to look at the theory in extensive detail and to systematically contrast it with other theories. It is also the first to apply the theory to infancy and early childhood, to use the theory to provide a framework for understanding semantic development, and to demonstrate that language acquisition influences theory change in children. The authors show that children just beginning to talk are engaged in profound restructurings of several domains of knowledge. These restructurings are similar to theory changes in science, and they influence children's early semantic development, since children's cognitive concerns shape and motivate their use of very early words. But, in addition, children pay attention to the language they hear around them and this too reshapes their cognition, and causes them to reorganize their theories.

Hardcover. First Ed; later printing. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ: Both book and DJ show only minute indications of use. Book shows a slight waviness to the top edge of the text block, due no doubt to exposure of a moist environment, but no dampstaining, mildew, odor or other negative indication of same; the binding shows the slightest lean, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. DJ shows just a hint of wear to the extemities; else flawless; mylar-protected. Overall, very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 200pp. First Ed; later printing. Hardback with DJ. I've always regarded Ray Jackendoff as an anti-Chomsky Chomskian. Like Chomsky he believes in innate structure but unlike Chomsky he uses meaning rather than parts of speech to formulate his arguments. He also sits a bit uncomfortably, particularly in chapters 5 and 8, on the fence between philosophical and and psychological linguistics, which does make for good discussion. The language used in the book is not heavily laid with jargon though Jackendoff can be wordy and the level of presentation is aimed at an academic rather than a popular audience. "Languages" consists of 8 essays, some revised just for the book, which argue for the existence of underlying more primitive representations for thought. In chapters 2 and 3 Jackendoff reflects on the idea of concept, expressing his own approach and comparing it to Chomsky, Piaget and Fodor. He regards concepts as partially innate, partially learned and notes analogies of inference in different domains such as in ownership and spatial reasoning. Chapter 4 asks if there is a separate facility for social cognition and if so what are it's features and components. Aspects considered include face recognition, ideas of social structure and the differences between an internal (i-language/i-social) representations and external (e-language/e-social) verbalization; the ideas of transaction, ownership and property rights are considered - the transmission of ideas taken as a special case as transferring an idea does not entail loss of ownership by the giver. Chapter6 "Spatial Language and Spatial Cognition" is a comprehensive look at the limited number of English terms referring to the placement and orientation of objects and finds that with some differences other languages have more or less the same descriptive power. The completeness allowed by the small number of words makes this analysis more into a scientific analysis than philosophic discussion. There is a mismatch between language's ability to describe and visual cognition suggesting that different representations are at play. Chapter 7 "Musical Parsing and Musical Affect" promised to do the same for music. Alas, I'm a bit of an illiterate when it comes to recognizing and labeling musical patterns. I found the theorizing about internal musical parsers interesting but I didn't follow all of the specific examples - one of my limitations and your mileage may vary. Jackendoff is one of the great lights of modern linguistics. Readers should find that this book to be a reasonable exposure to his ideas. He also makes frequent references to Miller & Johnson-Laird's 1976 classic Language and Perception, a favorite of mine, which treated the ontology of language as a systematic program of observation and categorization rather than a series of anecdotes to support a theory of mind.

This book critiques the assumptions of modern neuroimaging, arguing that attempts to localize mental functions in specific brain regions repeat the errors of 19th-century phrenology. William R. Uttal was a professor of psychology and electrical engineering who published widely on perception, cognition, and neuroscience. This is one of his major works on cognitive science and philosophy of mind.
