It is the most important production sector, but its competitiveness and innovativeness are under pressure. This book reports on a legal research into the question if there is a connection between the sector's declining innovativeness and competitiveness on the one hand and the increasing regulatory burden on the other hand. The aim is to indicate opportunities to remove avoidable obstacles for the food industry in general and small and medium enterprises in particular. The book brings to light several shortcomings in the regulatory framework and makes concrete recommendations for simplifying and improving EU food legislation. The findings are based on fundamental legal analyses. They are combined with the following three empirical case studies: -premarket approval schemes, for novel foods in particular; -the application of the EU food hygiene package in the dairy sector in selected regions in Italy and France; and -private standards in the Dutch dairy sector. The book shows that compliance by the EU legislator and authorities with EU food law principles and requirements is key to improving the position of food businesses.

These challenges stimulate the management of many F&B companies to become innovative. Innovation managers have to deal with questions concerning the product innovation strategy, the partners with whom they can co-innovate and the management of the innovation process. Four studies have been carried out that all use empirical data on 129 products of the Dutch F&B industry. Data were collected in 2000 and in 2005. The studies focus on the innovative product itself, rather than on the companies. They provide empirical evidence of the relationships between factors dealing with the product innovation process, the innovation strategy, the innovation network and the market performance of the products. Where most studies only deal with short term performance, these studies also deal with the market performance in the long term (seven years after product launch). This book contributes to a better understanding of the key factors in product innovation in the F&B industry that are related to and explain the product's successful market performance in the short and long term.

Through an exploration of geographical regions that are relatively little known to an English reading public, it argues that late sixteenth-century East Central Europe was culturally thriving and intellectually open in the period between Copernicus and Galileo. Humanism was a dominant cluster of shared intellectual practices and cultural values that brought a number of concrete benefits both to the social-climber intellectual and to the social elite. Two exemplary case studies illustrate this thesis in substantive detail, and highlight the ambivalences and difficulties court humanists routinely faced. The protagonists Johannes Sambucus and Andreas Dudith, both born in the Kingdom of Hungary, were two of the major humanists of the Habsburg court, central figures in cosmopolitan networks of men learning and characteristic representatives of an Erasmian spirit that was struggling for survival in the face of confessionalisation. Through an analysis of their careers at court and a presentation of their self-fashioning as savants and courtiers, the book explores the social and political significance of their humanist learning and intellectual strategies.
