Vier Kontingente sind daher seit Mitte 2017 in diesem Teil Europas stationiert. Außerdem wurde 2015 eine Schnelle Eingreiftruppe (Very High Readiness Joint Task Force) aufgestellt, die bei Bedarf rasch in die Region verlegt werden kann. Das Zentrum für Militärgeschichte und Sozialwissenschaften fügt vor diesem Hintergrund den bereits für zahlreiche Länder und Regionen vorliegenden Bänden der Reihe 'Wegweiser zur Geschichte' eine weitere Publikation hinzu. Dieses Buch versammelt zahlreiche Beiträge von renommierten Experten aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Fachdisziplinen.
