Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The current edition is the fifteenth in the series. Over the years the structure of the yearbook has shifted from that of a journal to a thematic anthology. The main editorship as well as the thematic expertise for this volume has been the responsibility of the Danish Institute for Human Rights. As the title of this volume, 'Human Rights and Local/Living Law', indicates, its focus is on the various forms of local, informal and/or customary law and their interaction with human rights. The Human Rights in Development series takes its starting point in a development perspective and aims to be topical, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary, exemplifying the 'cross-fertilization' of theoretical and practical approaches. Contributions are sought from researchers and practitioners in both donor and recipient countries. To ensure an increased focus on Southern perspectives, participation in the editorial work and inclusion of authors from a broad geographical scope has been, and is continuously, sought. The volumes published in the Human Rights in Development series, which for historical reasons still carry the word Yearbook in their title, are the result of a long-term collaboration between human rights research institutes and centres. Currently, the partners in the project include the Christian Michelsen Institute, Bergen; the Danish Institute for Human Rights, Copenhagen; the Icelandic Human Rights Centre, Reykjavik; the Ludwig Boltzman Institute of Human Rights, Vienna; the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, Utrecht; the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, Oslo; the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund; and the Åbo Akademi University Institute for Human Rights, Turku/Åbo.As in previous years, the publication is aimed at a broad audience, including government agencies, donor agencies, embassies, the press, non-governmental organisations, and the academic community.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Much of the previous fifty years of scholarship on Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) has circumscribed his ethical thought either within narrow interpretations of Calvinist theology or the philosophy of the 'moral sense.' The mutually exclusive nature of each perspective has distorted the importance Edwards granted human abilities in the salvation process and the demanding moral standards he thought were uniquely defining of Christians. Building on new interest in Protestant scholasticism, Puritan 'precisionism,' and virtue ethics, Virtue Reformed recalibrates the scholarly stalemate with a comprehensive rereading of both major published treatises and lesser-known discourses. The result is a fresh portrait of a fascinating eighteenth-century figure's struggle to be both a forwarder of the Reformation and a participant in the Enlightenment.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Recomposing German Music illuminates the tangled relationship between music and politics in 20th-century Germany. Focusing on the reconstruction and division of Berlin's musical community after 1945, author Elizabeth Janik demonstrates how military occupation and Cold War rivalry transformed the city's elite musical institutions. Berlin became a crucible for competing interpretations of German musical tradition. Cultural authorities in East and West Berlin disputed the social authority responsible for defining and upholding musical standards, the appropriate relationship between art and the state, the definition of musical progress, and finally, the nature and purpose of music itself. This study is an important contribution to the social history of 20th-century music and the comparative cultural history of the two Cold War Germanys.

New strategies for marketing and advertising to children, the production of gendered subjectivity in maquiladora factories, the racialized economic history of the construction of the Chicago School of sociology, and the normalization of cosmetic plastic surgery in contemporary America--these are some of the crossroads under investigation here, where cultural meanings and practices are set against historical landscapes of power.Included are contributions from William Gamson, Juliet Schor, Stephen Pfohl, Arthur and Marilouise Kroker, Jackie Orr, Leslie Salzinger, Eva Garroutte, Davarian Baldwin, Ramon Grosfoguel, Charlotte Ryan, Danielle Egan, Charles Sarno, Steve Farough, Karen McCorkmack, Abigail Brooks, Aimee Van Wagenen and William Wood.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book deals with the making and the reuses of the divine words which were ascribed to Apollo from the 2nd to the 6th centuries AD and which have now become available in both epigraphical and literary sources. The larger part has been issued by the sanctuaries of Claros and Didyma. This comprehensive and historical approach analyses the oracles of Apollo according to the various contexts ancient authors used to resort to the sacred words. The first part of the book examines, in the context of the Graeco-Roman city-states, the oracular texts in relation to the sanctuaries where they had originally been produced. The second part explores the different ways in which the Apollinian oracles were reappropriated by pagan and Christian authors for philosophical, polemical and apologetic purposes. This study of the sacred texts reveals in an original manner the cultural, political, and religious life of pagans and Christians in the Roman Empire.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Studierende können so selbständig mit den Beweistechniken experimentieren und erhalten unmittelbares Feedback für viele Übungen.'It's as if the teaching of logic moved from black-and-white to Technicolor.' - Tom Burke, University of South Carolina.
