Paperback. Condizione: New. Revised Edition. 'Admirably brief and necessarily brutal. Highly recommended.' - NICK COHEN, THE SPECTATOR 'Compact and easily digestible. I'd encourage anyone who is confused, fascinated or frustrated by Brexit to read this book - you'll be far wiser by the end of it.' - CAROLINE LUCAS MP 'I would st…rongly recommend Ian Dunt's excellent guide. Dunt has taken the extraordinary step of asking a set of experts what they think. I learnt a lot.' - PHILIP COLLINS, PROSPECT Britain's departure from the European Union is riddled with myth and misinformation - yet the risks are very real. Brexit could diminish the UK's power, throw its legal system into turmoil, and lower the standard of living of 65m citizens. In this revised bestseller, Ian Dunt explains why leaving the world's largest trading bloc will leave Britain poorer and key industries like finance and pharma struggling to operate. He argues that Brexit is unlikely to cause a big economic implosion, but will instead act like a slow puncture in the UK's national prosperity and global influence. Based on extensive interviews with trade and legal experts, Brexit: What the Hell Happens Now? is a searching exploration of Brexit shorn of the wishful thinking of its supporters in the British media and Parliament. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ian Dunt is a columnist for the I newspaper and appears as a pundit on BBC TV, Sky News and Al-Jazeera. With Dorian Lynskey, he presents the Origin Story podcast and is a regular contributor to the Oh God, What Now? podcast. His most recent book, How To Be A Liberal (Canbury, 2020), is an epic history of the spread of the ideas underpinning personal freedom. EXTRACT What is the European project? Britain has always been deeply ignorant of the motivation behind the European project. The most common British response to European politicians is indifference, followed by frustration, followed by mockery. But without understanding Europe, you can't effectively negotiate with Europe. Ultimately, the European Union arose out of the ashes of the Second World War. In 1951, to prevent future disputes over resources, six nations agreed to trade freely in steel and coal. In 1957, the nations of the Coal and Steel Community (France, West Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg) signed the Treaty of Rome, founding the European Economic Community, which created a bigger common market and a customs union. Over time this common market attracted more nations and became the European Union. For years Britain stood outside this club. In 1951, Prime Minister Clement Attlee declined an invitation to join the Coal and Steel Community, dismissing it as 'six nations, four of whom we had to rescue from the other two.' Britain also spurned the European Economic Community in 1958. While the European states looked to each other for peace and prosperity, the UK, with its still large empire and its special relationship with the United States, gazed overseas. Britain and the Continent were divided not just by geog.

Paperback. Condizione: New. In 1646 in Newgate Gaol in London, a political activist, Richard Overton, penned a pamphlet that contained dangerous ideas. An Arrow Against All Tyrants asserted the inalienable rights of the individual.'No man has power over my rights and liberties, and I over no man's. For by natural birth all men a…re equally and alike born to like propriety, liberty and freedom.'The thoughts contained within were radical at a time of historic upheaval in England. This book reprints Overton's bold, declamatory pamphlet, carefully typeset from the original at the British Library. It is introduced by Ian Gadd, Professor of English Literature at Bath Spa University, who sets Overton's work into its literary and historical context. An Arrow Against All Tyrants is deal for anyone interested in the tumult of radical ideas during the English civil wars and the both of human rights.Introduction by Ian Gadd (excerpt)In October 1646, somewhere on the streets of London, the bookseller George Thomason picked up a scruffily printed work entitled An Arrow Against all Tyrants and Tyranny by Richard Overton (fl. 1640-63) and, as was his habit, noted the date of his latest acquisition on its title-page. Thomason had been systematically collecting all sorts of printed items since 1640 and An Arrow was just the latest example of what he and his contemporaries would have called a pamphlet - a word that, of course, still has currency today but that lacks much of the potency and meaning that it had for Overton's first readers.First of all, a pamphlet was not a book. This may seem a curious thing to say, especially as you're currently holding this book in your hands, but a 17th Century reader would have understood the distinction. For a start, a pamphlet was not bound. Many printed works in England in this period were sold unbound - as folded, printed sheets ó in the expectation that a purchaser would get them bound, but some kinds of printed items, including pamphlets, were never intended for binding. Instead, a pamphlet like An Arrowwould have been 'stab stitched': simply held together by coarse thread that had been stabbed through the left-hand margin when the pamphlet was closed. In contrast to the careful, precise, and hidden sewing of a book binding, stab-stitching signalled a pamphlet's sense of urgency and directness - and also its likely ephemerality.More in book.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The true story by a teenager with OCD 'Extremely compelling' - THE GUARDIAN 'Remarkable' - WASHINGTON POST 'A beautifully-rendered memoir' - PUBLISHERS WEEKLYBecause We Are Bad is a gripping, fast-paced non-fiction memoir that takes you inside the invisible war of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) -… where a single intrusive thought can feel like a verdict, and where the mind insists that certainty is the only form of safety. From the outside, Lily is a bright, capable girl navigating school, friendships, and family life. On the inside, her days are governed by dread: unwanted images, taboo thoughts, sudden spikes of anxiety, and the persistent fear that thinking something "bad" means being bad. OCD is not neat, quirky, or harmless in this story. It is urgent, intelligent, and exhausting - an illness that hijacks logic, steals time, and makes ordinary moments feel dangerous. Written with razor-sharp clarity and literary elegance, Because We Are Bad has the pace of a thriller: a page-turning true story of rituals and mental compulsions, of moral panic and secret rules, of the desperate bargains made to keep disaster away. Lily Bailey captures the looping nature of obsession - the way intrusive thoughts return, mutate, and demand new answers - while showing how shame and silence can tighten the trap. This is narrative nonfiction at its most intimate: an OCD memoir that turns a private disorder into a vivid, cinematic reading experience. Yet this is not only a story of suffering. It is also a story of survival, insight, and recovery - the hard-won shift from fear-driven obedience to the possibility of freedom. With compassion and hard truth, Bailey traces how OCD distorts identity ("because we are bad"), and how naming the disorder can become the first step toward reclaiming the self. If you have ever lived with anxiety, panic, depression, perfectionism, rumination, or the crushing need to "get it right," you will recognise the emotional squeeze of a brain that refuses to let go. Inside this unforgettable mental health memoir, you'll find: A vivid, honest portrait of life with OCD and intrusive thoughts, including the isolating pressure to appear "fine." The hidden mechanics of compulsions - checking, reassurance seeking, avoidance, mental reviewing - and how they can escalate in secret. A moving coming-of-age journey through fear, courage, family, and the complicated work of growing up with mental illness. A voice that is intelligent, humane, and fiercely readable: candid, darkly funny at times, and always compassionate. Because We Are Bad is essential reading for anyone searching for an OCD memoir, an obsessive-compulsive disorder autobiography, or a powerful mental health book that combines literary nonfiction with real-life urgency. It's also a valuable read for partners, parents, friends, teachers, therapists, and caregivers - anyone who wants to understand what OCD can look like beyond stereotypes, and why reassurance and "just stop thin.

Extract In April 2019, Volodymyr Zelensky was elected as the sixth President of Ukraine, with nearly three-quarters of the vote. One month later, the Russian President attended the World Economic Forum in St. Petersburg. It had been five years since Russia's annexation of Crimea but daily skirmishes between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists were still commonplace in eastern Ukraine. 'Why did you not congratulate Volodymyr Zelenksy when he became President?' asked the interviewer. Putin breathed a heavy sigh. The Russian officials and business magnates in the room playfully nudged one another: this was going to be good. Putin gave the enormous hall an almost pitying look and waited until the sniggering had.

The science of pain. John Walsh One night in May, my wife sat up in bed and said, 'I've got this awful pain just here.' She prodded her abdomen and made a face. 'It feels like something's really wrong.' Woozily noting that it was 2am, I asked what kind of pain it was. 'Like something's biting into me and won't stop,' she said. 'Hold on,' I said blearily, 'help is at hand.' I brought her a couple of ibuprofen with some water, which she downed, clutching my hand and waiting for the ache to subside. An hour later, she was sitting up in bed again, in real distress. 'It's worse now,' she said, 'really nasty. Can you phone thedoctor?' Miraculously, the family doctor answered the phone at 3am, listened to her recital of symptoms and concluded, 'It might be your appendix. Have you had yours taken out?' No, she hadn't. 'It could be appendicitis,' he surmised, 'but if it was dangerous you'd be in much worse pain than you're in. Go to the hospital in the morning, but for now, take some paracetamol and try to sleep.' Barely half an hour later, the balloon went up. She was awakened for the third time, but now with a pain so savage and uncontainable it made her howl like a tortured witch face down on a bonfire. The time for murmured assurances and spousal procrastination was over. I rang a local minicab, struggled into my clothes, bundled her into a dressing gown, and we sped to St Mary's Paddington at just before 4am. The flurry of action made the pain subside, if only through distraction, and we sat for hours while doctors brought forms to be filled, took her blood pressure and ran tests. A re.

Paperback. Condizione: New. A true story of courage, exile and the making of a refugee in the shadow of World War Two On the night of 30 September 1938, as German troops cross the border into Czechoslovakia, Jewish businessman Harry Lewy has only hours to decide: stay and risk persecution, or leave behind everything he knows. Wh…at follows is a perilous journey from the Sudetenland across Nazi Germany and war-torn Europe, in search of safety and a future that is far from guaranteed. In Flight From Prague, Harry's son Michael Lewis reconstructs Harry's flight and the fragile new life he builds in Belfast, drawing on family memories, interviews, letters and archival records. This deeply researched non-fiction narrative brings to life the tramlines and stations of Central Europe, the quiet terror of border crossings, and the small acts of kindness that keep hope alive. As Harry rebuilds his world in a foreign country - later reunited with his childhood sweetheart, dancer and Holocaust survivor Helen Lewis (née Helena Katz) - he must come to terms with what has been lost and what it means to be labelled a "refugee" forever. Elegant and unsentimental, Flight From Prague is both an intimate Jewish refugee memoir and a vivid work of World War Two history, inviting us to see beyond statistics and categories to the singular human being behind each journey. Perfect for readers who enjoy: True stories from World War Two and European historyJewish biography and Holocaust non-fiction that centre individual livesLiterary narrative non-fiction in the tradition of family memoirThought-provoking books that illuminate today's refugee and migration crises For book clubs, students of modern history, and anyone drawn to powerful true stories of escape, resilience and moral courage, Flight From Prague offers an unforgettable journey from fear towards a new life. Reviews Michael Lewis captures perfectly the mix of terror, determination and sheer exhaustion that his Jewish father experienced as he fled for his life from his Czechoslovakian homeland, eventually crossing Nazi Germany to safety in Belfast shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. While it is the unique story of one refugee who loses everything, risks everything and starts again in a foreign country, it will surely help us understand better the plight of those who continue to make such perilous journeys in our own time, and perhaps deepen our compassion for them as well. The Revd Canon Dr Alan Billings Harry's story is richly informative about historical events that should never be forgotten. At the same time, its human details engage our current predicament. It narrates an individual as we hope they would be treated in law and policy - not labelled as 'refugee', 'asylum seeker' or 'migrant', but recognised as a person with dignity, needs and rights. John Birtwhistle.

Sometimes they'll keep the clothing, the strips of shirt or trousers that weren't cut away and discarded by the doctors and nurses. They'll tell and retell their story at family gatherings and online, sharing pictures and news reports of survivals like their own or far bigger tragedies. The video of a tourist hit on a Brazilian beach or the Texan struck dead while out running. The 65 people killed during four stormy days in Bangladesh. Only by piecing together the bystander reports, the singed clothing and the burnt skin can survivors start to construct their own picture of the possible trajectory of the electrical current, one that can approach 200 million volts and travel at one-third of the speed of light. In this way, Jaime Santana's family have stitched together some of what happened that Saturday afternoon in April 2016, through his injuries, burnt clothing and, most of all, his shredded broad-brimmed straw hat. "It looks like somebody threw a cannonball through it," says Sydney Vail, a trauma surgeon in Phoenix, Arizona, who helped care for Jaime after he arrived by ambulance, his heart having been shocked several times along the way as paramedics struggled to stabilise its rhythm. Jaime had been horse-riding with his brother-in-law and two others in the mountains behind his brother-in-law's home outside Phoenix, a frequent weekend pastime. Dark clouds had formed, heading in their direction, so the group had started back. They had nearly reached the house when it happened, says Alejandro Torres, Jaime's brother-in-law. He paces out the area involved, t.

Fast-paced business book that explains TikTok 'It is rare for a business analysis to read like a thriller - this one does.' - Azeem Azhar, Exponential View 'A must-read for students, scholars, and policymakers.' - David Craig, Professor, USC Annenberg TikTok didn't just arrive - it detonated. In a han…dful of years, a short-video app from ByteDance, a Chinese tech company few people outside the industry had heard of, surged past entrenched platforms and reshaped what the internet looks like: how we watch, how we shop, how music breaks, how language evolves, and how fame is manufactured at scale. In TikTok Boom, journalist Chris Stokel-Walker takes you behind the screen to reveal how the world's favourite app became a global force. This is the rare business and technology story that reads with the pace of a thriller -because the stakes are real. TikTok isn't only entertainment; it's a platform powered by an astonishing recommendation algorithm, a fast-moving creator economy, and a company operating at the centre of an East-meets-West superpower contest. Whether you're a creator trying to go viral, a marketer building a smarter social media strategy, a founder studying product growth, or simply curious about how your "For You" page seems to know you better than you do, TikTok Boom is your essential guide to understanding what makes TikTok tick - and why it matters for culture, commerce, and power. What you'll discover inside: The origin story: how TikTok evolved, scaled, and outmanoeuvred rivals in the attention war. The engine under the scroll: how TikTok's algorithm, data signals, and feedback loops shape what you see-minute by minute-and why it feels so addictive. The new rules of influence: how trends are engineered, remixed, and amplified, and how creators turn seconds of video into careers. TikTok for business, without the buzzwords: what brands can learn from the platform's style of storytelling, community, and discovery. The hidden hand of moderation: content guidelines, enforcement, and the subtle ways they can change what becomes visible (and what disappears). The ByteDance ambition: the people who built the machine, the company culture behind it, and the friction that followed as TikTok expanded worldwide. The geopolitical tension around Chinese tech: scrutiny, bans, and political flashpoints that turned a social app into an international headline. Stokel-Walker draws on deep reporting and interviews with people connected to TikTok - from company insiders to creators in front of the camera - bringing clarity to the myths, controversies, and hype. You'll come away with a sharper understanding of why TikTok feels different from Instagram, YouTube, or Snapchat; why "going viral" on TikTok follows a distinct logic; and how algorithmic discovery has changed the value of followers, fame, and attention. And because this is written by a journalist - not a hype merchant - you'll also see the bigger picture: how platforms police speech, how.

Paperback. Condizione: New. GUARDIAN'S TOP BOOK ON THE UK HOUSING CRISIS 'An essential read about a broken housing market.' - Peter Apps, Inside Housing If paying rent feels like a second tax - and saving for a deposit feels impossible - you're not imagining it. Across the UK housing market, millions of people are stuck in the r…ent trap: high rents that can exceed mortgage payments, tiny and poorly maintained flats, insecure tenancies, deposit battles, and the constant stress of being forced to move with little notice. Generation Rent is Chloe Timperley's razor-sharp, eye-opening investigation into Britain's housing crisis and the death of the homeownership dream. It shows how we went from a post-war era of affordable council housing and rising ownership to an economy where homes became financial assets, property investment vehicles, pension pots and "wealth machines" - while a whole generation haemorrhages cash to landlords. This book tackles the big questions renters, first-time buyers, parents and policymakers keep asking: Why are house prices so high? Why is renting so expensive? Why can't a reliable tenant get a mortgage? Who benefits from the current system - banks, developers, buy-to-let investors, letting agents, freeholders - and who is being squeezed out? Inside you'll uncover: . The real mechanics behind runaway house prices: land scarcity, planning permission politics, mortgage credit, money creation, low interest rates and quantitative easing . How Right to Buy, the sell-off of council homes, and the shrinkage of social housing reshaped affordability and security . The rise of buy-to-let and the "House of Landlords" - and why renters and investors end up bidding on the same starter homes . The hidden pitfalls of modern "solutions": Help to Buy, shared ownership, leasehold flats and leasehold houses, ground rent clauses, service charges and the "mortgaged tenant" reality . The lived experience of private renting: poor standards, repairs ignored, overcrowding, homelessness pressure, housing benefit gaps, and the fear of no-fault eviction Most importantly, Generation Rent doesn't stop at diagnosis. It sets out realistic, radical action to restore common sense and decency: stronger tenant rights, better regulation of the rental market, genuine affordable housing at scale, a renewed social housebuilding programme, and the hard conversations Britain avoids about land, taxation, and land value (including the case for land reform and a land value tax). Perfect for readers searching for: UK housing crisis, housing affordability, rent crisis, generation rent, private rented sector, renting in Britain, tenant rights, renters reform, rent control, rent caps, no-fault eviction, deposits, letting agents, buy-to-let, buy-to-let mortgage, property market economics, house price inflation, housing bubble, property ladder, first-time buyer, saving for a deposit, mortgage affordability, interest-only, Bank of England policy, quantitative easing, planning permission, green belt.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The true story of a footballer who paid the ultimate price 'A heartbreaking but still inspiring insight into the real-life impact of the biggest issue facing the world's biggest sport.' Jeremy Wilson, Chief Sports Reporter, The Telegraph 'Beautifully written, immaculately researched and pulls no punch…es.' Ian Herbert, Daily Mail This is the extraordinary true story of the 'real' Bill Gates: a famous footballer and millionaire businessman, who fell victim to football's guilty secret and who, in his final years, made a commitment to use his brain to save the next generation of football players. Born in a mining village in northern England, Bill was Britain's first £50-a-week teenage superstar. He played 333 games for Middlesbrough before becoming the first entrepreneur to turn sports shops into high-street fashion, making millions of pounds. With his wife Judith, he lived a life of luxury on a Caribbean island, far from his humble roots. But in 2017 his life changed when he was diagnosed with football's best-kept secret, probable Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, caused by repetitive head impacts - mostly from heading the ball. Award-winning journalist Mike Amos perfectly captures the twists and turns of Bill's career, from the coal mining village of Ferryhill in the 1950s, his footballing career in the 60s and 70s, a chain of sports shops in the 80s, to an exotic lifestyle on Grand Cayman in the 90s, to the difficult journey to safeguard the future of football. The ground-breaking charity Bill and Judith set up, Head Safe Football, has supported families of players with CTE - and educates players, coaches, sports scientists, and parents to recognise that CTE begins in young footballers and can be prevented with common-sense policies and training. If you have ever headed a football, if your child or grandchild heads footballs, this is a book you need to read. Acclaimed in the national media Reviews "A heartbreaking but still inspiring insight into the real-life impact of the biggest issue facing the world's biggest sport. But does football care enough about its former heroes to take sufficient action?" Jeremy Wilson, Chief Sports Reporter, The Telegraph "A must-read, not only for the light-hearted reminiscing of football anecdotes and memories, but to learn the startling truth behind a game touching so many lives, and the devastation it can cause." Hilary Maddren, widow of Willie Maddren, Middlesbrough player and manager who died of neurodegenerative disease "Not just an important read for football fans, but for anyone whose life has been touched by the slowly unfolding despair of dementia." Harry Pearson, author of The Far Corner "No Brainer is a meticulous and moving read that exposes the cost of football's collective failure to protect players. One day, football will thank women like Dr Judith Gates who fought to spare future generations the pain they suffered as they watched their loved ones slowly succumb to diseases like CTE." Warren Manger.

Hardback. Condizione: New. 'Most books on persuasion teach the few how to sway the many. With wit and vim, Guy has given us something else: an X-ray into the tactics of those trying to change our minds and behaviour.' - Stephen Krupin, former speechwriter for Barack Obama How to Apologise for Killing a Cat is an illustrated, mod…ern guide to rhetoric, persuasive language and critical thinking. It's for anyone who wants to understand how words shape decisions in politics, business and everyday life - and for anyone who wants to become a clearer, more confident communicator. Guy Doza takes the "dark art" of persuasion (from Aristotle and Cicero to today's media and social platforms) and explains it in plain English with humour, sharp examples and practical takeaways. Rhetoric isn't just for parliament, courtrooms and keynote stages. It lives in meetings, texts, emails, adverts, interviews, speeches, debates, dating apps, pub arguments and those tense moments when you have to say sorry and make it stick. If you've ever felt talked into something, talked over, or talked around, this book is your toolbox. You'll learn how influence works, why certain arguments feel "true" even when they're built on shaky logic, and how skilled speakers use style, structure, emotion and credibility to win an audience. You'll also learn how to defend yourself against manipulation, spin, propaganda and fake-news "evidence" without losing your cool. What you'll learn and practise: . The three pillars of classical rhetoric: logos (logic), ethos (authority/credibility) and pathos (emotion) and how to balance them in persuasive writing and public speaking . Speechwriting and presentation skills: audience analysis, framing, emphasis, rhythm, tone, storytelling, rhetorical questions and memorable phrasing . Rhetorical devices and figures of speech that make messages stick: such as repetition, the rule of three (tricolon), anaphora, and epistrophe . How arguments work under the hood: syllogisms, informal logic, evidence, and how "walls of logic" can be built from bad assumptions . The classic dirty tricks of persuasion: character attacks, reputation management, comprobatio (strategic flattery), occultatio (saying something by pretending you won't) and more . Logical fallacies, misleading statistics and rhetorical sleight of hand - plus how to spot them in marketing, advertising, political rhetoric and workplace debate . How to apologise: sincere apologies, strategic apologies, public apologies, crisis communication, reputation repair and what makes an apology backfire . Persuasion in real life: negotiations, leadership communication, sales and pitching, conflict resolution, office politics, and the often messy rhetoric of sex, flirting and relationships This is the ideal rhetoric book for readers of communication skills, debate, argumentation, psychology, media literacy and public speaking. It's a smart companion for students, writers, marketers, managers, entrepreneurs, teachers, lawyers and anyone who n.
