Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In this biography of her mother ("Red Saint") and autobiography ("Pink Daughter") Silvia Rodgers gives an account of her off-centre life, always in the wrong place at the most perilous time, and in difficult company, whether Polish child in the German capital, or Jewish child in a German school.… Rodgers's mother was a Polish Jewish Communist in the Weimar Republic as the storm gathered. She was a "political" saint - as a mother she was not so saintly. Race and politics became problems as the Nazis rose: she remembers book burnings, the marauding Brownshirts, knocks at the door. She also offers an account of her family's flight from Berlin. Arriving in a less than hospitable England, the culture shock of war- and post-war Britain is recalled; also the loss of friends and relatives killed in the concentration camps. Rodgers gradually made her own life, marrying the Labour politician Bill Rodgers of the "Gang of Four", and becoming a writer. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Patricia Beer's "Friend of Heraclitus" is made up of 50 poems written since the publication of her "Collected Poems" in 1988. The book is in three parts. "Wessex Calendar" is a sequence of 12 sonnets, following the months of the year, each focusing on a building or landscape in her native South…West, including Stourhead, Clouds Hill and the woods at Wordsworth's Alfoxden. "Observations" is a set of modern imagist verses. The third and largest part of the book consists of poems on diverse themes: reflections on childhood and middle age, reading, travel, and reactions to happenings in the world around us, past and present. Patricia Beer works in many forms, from blank verse to syllabics and the freer metres of today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Sophie Hannah's sharp pen dissects modern life and relationships with insouciant honesty and ruthless wit, and her love poems evoke timeless feelings with a shrewd simplicity that deepens her range. An edge of desolation, tenderness - an occasional flash of cruelty - and an ebullient delight in…language make this a book of bittersweet pleasures. "Pessimism for Beginners" includes an extract from the opening chapter of Sophie Hannah's second psychological thriller, "Hurting Distance", published by Hodder and Stoughton, described by "The Times" as 'a superbly creepy, twisty thriller about obsessive love, psychological torture and the darkest chambers of the human heart'. In poetry and prose, Sophie Hannah is compellingly readable. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In his poem 'Modern Painters' Dan Burt looks at the twentieth century and its aftermath through the shattered lens of Ruskin's famous book and the work of certain modern painters. 'We look like this after things fall apart;/The painting is the autopsy report,' reflecting on two World Wars, stepp…ing over the corpse of the Enlightenment. His poems are steady, hard, truth-telling in the way of the painters he most admires, and proof against sentiment. He matches the scale of his concerns with a substantial large- and small-scale poetic architecture, lyrical, philosophical, elegiac or satirical as appropriate. Dan Burt, a master of traditional forms, has published two chapbooks and an art book. This is his first full collection and includes poems, sequences and his celebrated prose memoir 'Certain Windows'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Shortlisted for the Writers' Prize 2024 Shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize 2024 Longlisted for the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature 2024 Winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize 2023 Winner of the Forward Prize for Best Collection 2023 The Poetry Book Society Spring Choice 2023 A Guardian and The Ir…ish Times Book of the Year Jason Allen-Paisant's debut collection Thinking With Trees won the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for poetry and was an Irish Times and White Review Book of the Year 2021. In Poetry London Maryam Hessavi wrote, 'Jason Allen-Paisant is uncompromising when digging down through the undergrowth of our imperialist past and yet he succeeds in replanting new narratives in the same soil where these toxic ideologies used to, and still, reside.' The interlocking poems of his second collection, Self-Portrait as Othello, imagine Othello in the urban landscapes of modern London, Paris and Venice and invent the kinds of narrative he might tell about his intersecting identities. Poetic memoir and ekphrastic experiment, Self-Portrait as Othello focuses on a character at once fictional and real. Othello here represents a structure of feeling that was emerging in seventeenth-century Venice, and is still with us. Portraiting himself as Othello, Allen-Paisant refracts his European travels and considers the Black male body, its presence, transgressiveness and vulnerabilities. Othello's intertwined identities as 'immigrant' and 'Black', which often operate as mutually reinforcing vectors, speak to us in the landscape of twenty-first-century Europe. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. From the first New Poetries anthology, published in 1994, through to this seventh volume, the series has showcased some of the most engaging and inventive new poets writing in English from around the world. Many have gone on to achieve notable success: Kei Miller, Sinead Morrissey, Caroline Bird…, Sophie Hannah, Tara Bergin and Vahni Capildeo among them. The New Poetries anthologies have never sought to identify a `school, much less a `generation: the poets included employ a wide range of styles, forms and approaches, and `new need not be taken to imply `young. Many of the poets in the anthology have arrived via the pages of PN Review. FEATURING Luke Allan, Zohar Atkins, Rowland Bagnall, Sumita Chakraborty, Mary Jean Chan, Helen Charman, Rebecca Cullen, Ned Denny, Neil Fleming , Isabel Galleymore, Katherine Horrex, Lisa Kelly, Theophilus Kwek, Andrew Latimer, Toby Litt, Rachel Mann, James Leo McAskill, Jamie Osborn, Andrew Wynn Owen, Phoebe Power, Laura Scott, and Vala Thorodds. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Winner of the Costa Poetry Award 2020 A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year 2020 A Guardian Book of the Year 2020 A Sunday Independent Book of the Year 2020 An Irish Times Book of the Year 2020 A forceful and moving final volume from one of the most masterful poets of the twentieth centur…y. Throughout her nearly sixty-year career, acclaimed poet Eavan Boland came to be known for her exquisite ability to weave myth, history, and the life of an ordinary woman into mesmerizing poetry. She was an essential voice in both feminist and Irish literature, praised for her 'edgy precision, an uncanny sympathy and warmth, an unsettling sense of history' ( J.D. McClatchy). Her final volume, The Historians, is the culmination of her signature themes, exploring the ways in which the hidden, sometimes all-but-erased stories of women's lives can powerfully revise our sense of the past. Two women burning letters in a back garden. A poet who died too young. A mother's parable to her daughter. Boland listens to women who have long had no agency in the way their stories were told; in the title poem, she writes: 'Say the word history: I see / your mother, mine. / . Their hands are full of words.' Addressing Irish suffragettes in the final poem, Boland promises: 'We will not leave you behind', a promise that animates each poem in this radiant collection. These extraordinary, intimate narratives cling to the future through memory, anger, and love in ways that rebuke the official record we call history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This authoritative edition of Baudelaire's "Complete Verse" contains "Les Fleurs du mal" (1861), the first great modern work of poetry and one of the few books of poems to become an international bestseller, with "Nouvelles Fleurs du mal" (1868), "Les Aepaves" (1866) and all of Baudelaire's othe…r poetry in verse. The French text is given at the head of the page, while Francis Scarfe's scrupulous and inventive prose translations appear at the foot, making this an ideal edition both for the advanced student and the general reader wishing to tackle the French original with a reliable prose prompt to hand. The companion volume, "The Poems in Prose", contains Baudelaire's prose poems ("Petits Poemes en prose", 1869) and the short novel "La Fanfarlo" (1847), an "extravaganza" written in his early twenties. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The imprisoned species of pigs use their slum language; ravens, cuttlefish, sunflowers and a shell-back tick are among those non-verbal members of our natural world which find distinctive voices in this new collection of…poems by Les Murray. Few poets could achieve such variety of approach to express character and feelings and to give us their vision of the universe. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Edward Thomas is one of the best-loved of English poets, and a model of integrity for many of his successors. His poetry was written during the space of just two years, before he was killed in the First World War. Those years lie at the heart of Edward Thomas's Poets: Judy Kendall's gathering of… poems and letters embeds that brief period of intense poetic creativity within the wider narrative of Thomas's life. For the first time, letters by Thomas about writing and publishing are set alongside his poems, revealing the occasions of their composition, illuminating the processes of recollection, revision and development that transformed him into a poet. Interleaved with Thomas's own poems and letters are works by the literary friends whom he criticised and admired, and whose influence he absorbed: Walter de la Mare, W.H. Hudson, Robert Frost, Eleanor Farjeon and others. Many of the letters included here have not been collected before or are out of print. Enhanced by Judy Kendall's detailed notes and bibliographies, Edward Thomas's Poets provides a new perspective on Thomas's reading and writing of poetry, illuminating specific poems and revealing the complex sources of his mature verse. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Ach! I misspoke. What I mean to say is this In Long Pass, Joey Connollys first collection, the poet in love, in puzzlement, in frustration or in elegy keeps catching himself out, starting again. He wants to speak truthfully. He wants to say things simply. But nothing is as simple as it seems at…first. Nothing strikes the interlocutor quite as he intends. Ach! He goes back. Deflections, tangents: the long pass, the long unfolding sentence, the growing sequence, move away from what they intend to say in order at last, wittily, angrily, ironically, to swerve in and say it. Translation, too, is hard. There are often competing versions of Lorca, for example, and Cavafy. The painter is frustrated to be always / painting onto something, to be / concealing precisely as he displays. Words reveal and at the same time conceal, yet what they conceal is part of what they want to say. The poet throws the poem for someone who isnt always there to catch. The fortunate reader intercepts. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This is an anthology celebrating 100 years of one of the UK's leading poetry magazines. "Poetry Review" was founded in 1909. Its first editor was Harold Monro who, in refusing the editorship of the Poetry Society's in-house "Poetical Gazette" and holding out instead for editorial independence, s…et the standard for today's journal. It is the UK's poetry magazine of record and its editors have included Muriel Spark, Adrian Henri, Douglas Dunn, and Andrew Motion. Among its contributors are many of the twentieth century's greatest poets. The current editor is Fiona Sampson. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This volume of verse by Jane Austen and her family contains all the known poems by Jane herself and a selection of work by her sister Cassandra, four of her brothers, her uncle James, her nieces Anna and Fanny and her nephew James Edward. It is clear that her mother influenced her verse writing:… Mrs Austen was a skilful, witty practitioner, and all her extant poems are included. Three generations' work can be found within the covers of this volume. Verse-making was a social activity, a game of greeting, or charades, or bouts-rimes. Generally the poems in this volume are arranged by author, but David Selwyn has included three sets of verse arranged in their playful sequence. He provides an introduction and full explanetory notes and takes texts from autograph manuscripts or from the earliest copy. His transcriptions are precise in terms of spelling, punctuation and layout. Textual notes draw attention to significant variants. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. "Yellow Studio", Stephen Romer's fourth book of poems, is furnished with the poems of that middle of the life where amorous bewilderment, rueful satire and the bitter-sweet memory conduct their urgent dialogue. Exploring the mystifying link between sacred and erotic love, Romer identifies the so…urce of art itself, a place of creation and refuge, the yellow studio of the title poem. It is the lighted room of childhood, a vulnerable private place the adult tries to recreate. Formal acts of remembrance are attempts to identify what lies ahead as much as to preserve the shadows. Here Romer, with innocence and urbanity, takes stock of past and future. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Tripping Over Clouds issues a bold challenge to Ezra Pounds maxim to go in fear of abstractions. Underpinning this is a re-imagining of abstraction as a prior state of possibility and potential from which the world and ourselves are constantly re-emerging as abstraction to, not from. Both philos…ophical and fresh, the poetry trips off and back onto the page, like the fellrunner in its opening section: to talk about / the pleasure principle / of falling downhill fastly. Lucy Burnetts second collection explores how we fetch up with the world in all its variety, difficulty and beauty, ranging across encounters with mountains, love, contemporary politics and visual art. Ultimately this is a poetry which asserts hope, and playfulness, as strategies for navigating an inherently changeable sense of now. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A New Statesman Book of the Year 2021 A White Review Book of the Year 2021 In this remarkable first collection, Parwana Fayyaz evokes events in the lives of Afghan women, past and present their endurance and achievements, told from their points of view. John McAuliffe writes of the 'remarkable l…itanies, which haunt her poems' occasions' and the title poem, with which she won the 2019 Forward Prize for Best Single Poem, is such a litany, conjuring and commemorating. The poems are not judgmental: they witness. The reader infers the contexts. As well as the human stories there is a spectacular landscape, unfamiliar villages and cities, and a rich history which the Western press in reporting contemporary news foreshortens and diminishes. 'Storytelling has a long tradition in Afghan culture. Stories are passed down orally. Every woman even or especially those who are illiterate knows and has memorized a few important stories to share [.] I grew up among women who never went to school my grandmothers, my mother, my aunts.' As the poet grew away from that tradition, in which patience was the chief virtue, she lost patience and began her resistance, their resistance, in her poems which hover between cultures and languages, thinking in one and understanding in another. Each language has its history and value systems: 'it was learning English that gave me my voice as a poet, enabling me to distance myself as well as to comprehend the connection with the tradition I was brought up in.'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
