Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Longlisted for the 2020 Laurel Prize for Ecopoetry. A 2017 Poetry Book Society Recommendation. Set against a backdrop of ecological, political and emotional turbulence, Seasonal Disturbances is a charged yet meditative exploration of the relationship between nature, the city and the self in the 21st century. An interrupted zuihitsu written on board a Dutch barge on the Thames explores the elemental properties of water, repositioning the river as sacred space in a rapidly gentrifying London. A sinister CEO, presides, demigod-like, over a dystopian hinterland, where private detectives are hired to investigate crimes against hollyhocks; Halcyon is discovered as a dead kingfisher, washed up on an Italian beach and Odysseus is the archetypal migrant reimagined as a late night mini-cab driver. Lyrical, and at the same time technically inventive, the book includes new forms such as the golden shovel and gram of &s as well as prose/poetry hybrids, found sonnets and landays. As the daughter of a Jamaican émigré, McCarthy Woolf also employs a variety of linguistic disruptions and reversals that critique the rhetoric, as in 'Tatler's People Who Really Matter', which 'lifts the breathlessly worshipful language of a real-life society power list and applies it to immigrants.to offer a witty and nuanced take on a complex subject.' (Bidisha, BBC Arts). Political as they may be, these poems are not journalistic reportage but instead aim to inspire what the author describes as an 'activism of the heart as well as the mind, where we connect to and express forces of love and renewal'.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Wales Book of the Year 2018. Winner of the 2018 Roland Mathias Poetry Award. Shortlisted for the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize. The opening poem sequence, 'Diary of the Last Man,' sets the tone for Robert Minhinnick's book, a celebration of the dwindling Earth, an elegy, a caution. His Wales is a touchstone; other landscapes and cityscapes are tried against it, with its erratic weather, its sudden changes of mood, 'a black tonic.' The sequence remembers all the geographies of his earlier work, old and new world, but now unpeopled and the lonely spirit free to go anywhere, do anything, but meaning with mankind has drained away. Yet still alive, and still with language, registering. The rest of the book is filled with voices: of children, of rivers, terrorists, magicians; and voices translated from the Welsh, and from Turkish and Arabic, shared, enriching with their difference, their other worlds. History washes over and washes up on the strand of this Welsh book. It is seen and recognised, it begins to be transformed. In the long concluding poem, 'The Sand Orchestra,' the poet returns to his own voice, and to the voice of a Bechstein piano abandoned in the open air, played now by nature, its winds and sand. The last man, who has been looking for Ulysses, is the very man he has been looking for.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Winner of the 2020 Gdansk European Poet of Freedom Literary Award. Winner of the 2017 Forward Prize for Best Collection. Set against a backdrop of ecological and economic instability, Sinéad Morrissey's sixth collection, On Balance, revisits some of the great feats of human engineering to reveal the states of balance and inbalance that have shaped our history. The poems also address gender inequality and our inharmonious relationship with the natural world. A poem on Lilian Bland - the first woman to design, build and fly her own aeroplane - celebrates the audacity and ingenuity of a great Irish heroine. Elsewhere, explorers in Greenland set foot on a fjord system accessible to Europeans for the first time in millennia as a result of global warming. But if life is fragile then its traces are persistent, insistent, and in 'Articulation' we are invited to stop and wonder at the reconstructed skeleton of Napoleon's horse, Marengo, 'whose very hooves trod mud at Austerlitz', suspended in time 'for however long he lasts before he crumbles'.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Shortlisted for The Felix Dennis (Forward) Prize for Best First Collection 2017 Raking Light is Eric Langley's début collection of poems. Characterized by his rigorous fascination with language's latent etymologies and semantic layers, Langley's poems take their cue from the art conservation technique of 'raking light', in which an oblique beam is thrown across the surface of a picture to expose its textures and overlays. Under raked light, paint reveals its damage and deterioration, its craquelure and canvas-warp, and discloses a backstory of abandoned intentions. With his attentiveness to resonance and echo, Langley picks up on lost meanings and buried contradictions in language, probing its abandoned significances. Finding traces of obscured sense or inarticulacy, his verse picks at words to test their efficacy and authenticity, feeling out their substance, proving their worth. These are poems - elegies, love lyrics - concerned with miscommunication, with intentions gone astray, with loss and the uncertainties inherent in interaction. They are excited and exciting, defusing and detonating by turns the 'hectic honeyed hand-grenades / in amongst your alphabets'.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Set Thy Love in Order: New & Selected Poems gathers the work of some thirty years, taken from Stephen Romer's four previous collections, along with a substantial selection of new poems. Stephen Romer has been described as 'one of our finest poets of thwarted or impossible love' (Adam Thorpe in the Guardian) and the title of this New & Selected is a Dantescan objurgation as old as the Trecento: Ordina qu'est amore, o tu che m'ami - set thy love in order, o thou who lovest me. Romer's central theme is encapsulated by these words, and his prolonged and painstaking exploration of the 'intermittences of the heart', frequently carried out with a Francophile self-consciousness and a rueful wit, constitute so many variations on the theme.…
