Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First. A charming story of love and perseverance in the face of World War II. Bill Cook was a newly ordained Anglican priest who became a chaplain attached to a British Armored Division that fought in North Africa and Italy. Just before he left for his assignment, he became engaged to Helen, who was the daughter of a bishop. They ended up writing letters to each other nearly every day until Bill came home for good after the war in 1946. Approximately 6,000 letters in all! They did get finally get married during a leave soon after the war ended, but Bill still had to return to his unit in Italy until it was finally demobilized. This book is a selection from the letters that follows their lives, both at the fighting front and at the home front while they were apart. This copy is fine in dark green cloth with gilt titles on the spine. No marks or damage at all. The unclipped DJ is also fine. It is inscribed by both Helen and Bill on the title page. There is a gift inscription as well, which may be in their hand on the ffep. Also there are ink signatures at the bottom of both the foreward and the preface by their respective authors. However, it is difficult to determine whether they are original signatures or facsimiles. . CH. Signed.
