In this heavily illustrated book both outfits are examined in detail, with fascinating information on their organisation and training, weapons and equipment, and combat operations. The United States Marine Corps' 1st Division 'The Old Breed' is the oldest, largest, and most-decorated division-sized unit in the Corps. Divisional regiments first saw service as early as March 8, 1911, when the 1st Marines was formed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before performing in fifteen major engagements during World War I. In World War II the 1st Division was blooded at Guadalcanal, and then went on to fight throughout the entirety of the Pacific campaign. The Pacific War saw some of the most uncompromising warfare in World War II. Each amphibious landing and bloody battle to take the Pacific islands was a small-scale version of Europe's D-Day, and the USMC was at the heart of the action. The 1st Division would earn three World War II Presidential Unit Citations for its role at Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa each was well deserved. Motor torpedo boat development began in the early 1900s but it was not until the late 1930s that the US Navy seriously took on the challenge to create its own programme. PT-boats first saw action at the outset of World War II at Pearl Harbor and in the Philippines. By the end of the war over 600 had seen service in the Pacific theatre, the English Channel, and Mediterranean Sea. In 1940 the US Navy's PT-boats were organized into Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons, regularly shortened to the nickname of 'Ron' and this book covers the operational history of these. Forty-five Rons were commissioned, of which thirty-seven saw service by war's end, including Ron 2, among whose boats was USS PT-109, commanded by future president Lt (JG) John F. Kennedy, who would win the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroics. Germany's 21st Panzer Division was formed in North Africa in August 1941 from the 5th Leichte Division, and fought in all the major battles of the desert war, including the Afrika Korps' advance to El Alamein, the fighting retreat to Tunisia, and operations against the American forces at Kasserine, until it was destroyed around Tunis in 1943. Reconstituted in France, 21st Panzer went on to fight in Normandy after D-Day until it was again almost completely annihilated in the battle of the Falaise Gap. Again reformed, 21st Panzer would end its days on the Eastern Front, where it surrendered to the Russians at Cottbus, southeast of Berlin, in April 1945. The British Army's 7th Armoured Division, affectionately known as the 'Desert Rats', and distinguished by their red Jerboa shoulder flash, proved masters of desert fighting. As part of O'Connor's Western Desert Force, they helped destroy the Italian forces at Beda Fomm on 57 February 1941; then they fought toe-to-toe with Rommel's Deutsches Afrika Korps in a see-saw campaign that ended in victory for the Allies in May 1943. Next they were involved in the major amphibious landing at Salerno, fighting on in Italy until withdrawn to spearhead British forces in Normandy. The division learnt new skills in the Bocage countryside and from then on was hardly ever out of action, advancing through France and Belgium and on to Germany, where it took the surrender of Hamburg. For centuries land warfare was dominated by foot soldiers and horsemen: from Alexander the Greats army to Napoleon's, mobility and speed were functions of physical endurance for men and horses. Steam power brought a major change. Although it proved an excellent method of moving large numbers of troops quickly, over long distances, as was shown in the American Civil War and World War I, steam power did not prove to be viable on the battlefield itself. The development of the internal combustion engine kick started the mechanization of warfare. On October 19, 1914, British troops moved to the front in London omnibuses requisitioned by the army and during World War I trucks would begin to be used by every army. Tracked vehicles entered combat during the Somme offensive of 1916. And this was the precursor to the more extensive use of armoured fighting vehicles in World War II, the Cold War, and the wars in the Middle East. Mechanized Warfare tells this story from the first armoured cars and lozenge-shaped tanks of World War I, through the developmental 1920s and 1930s, to Blitzkrieg and World War II, when mechanized warfare came of age, even though German successes were backed up by long lines of footsloggers and horses. Full mechanization took place during the Cold War years, when mechanized warfare techniques were developed further on NATO's and the Warsaw Pact's exercise grounds, and on the battlefields of Korea, Vietnam, and in the Middle East. Today's soldiers rarely have to walk to the battlefield: they have armoured taxis to get them to the fight. These armoured personnel carriers have evolved into infantry fighting vehicles, often turreted with heavy support weapons. The tank, hunted by today's helicopters and new-generation antitank guided weapon, is at more risk today, but with new types of armour, improved fire-control systems, and heavier weapons it is still queen of the battlefield.
