Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Softcover volume, measuring approximately 6.25" x 9.25", is new. xiv/355 pages. "Following World War II, German antifascists and nationalists in Buenos Aires believed theater was crucial to their highly politicized efforts at community-building, and each population devoted considerable resources to competing against its rival onstage. "Competing Germanies" tracks the paths of several stage actors from European theaters to Buenos Aires and explores how two of Argentina's most influential immigrant groups, German nationalists and antifascists (Jewish and non-Jewish), clashed on the city's stages. Covered widely in German- and Spanish-language media, theatrical performances articulated strident Nazi, antifascist, and Zionist platforms. Meanwhile, as their thespian representatives grappled onstage for political leverage among emigrants and Argentines, behind the curtain, conflicts simmered within partisan institutions and among theatergoers. Publicly they projected unity, but offstage nationalist, antifascist, and Zionist populations were rife with infighting on issues of political allegiance, cultural identity and, especially, integration with their Argentine hosts. "Competing Germanies" reveals interchange and even mimicry between antifascist and nationalist German cultural institutions. Furthermore, performances at both theaters also fit into contemporary invocations of diasporas, including taboos and postponements of return to the native country, connections among multiple communities, and forms of longing, memory, and (dis)identification. Sharply divergent at first glance, their shared condition as cultural institutions of emigrant populations caused the antifascist Free German Stage and the nationalist German Theater to adopt parallel tactics in community-building, intercultural relationships, and dramatic performance. Its cross-cultural, polyglot blend of German, Jewish, and Latin American studies gives "Competing Germanies" a wide, interdisciplinary academic appeal and offers a novel intervention in Exile studies through the lens of theater, in which both victims of Nazism and its adherents remain in focus.".

"Karl Philipp Moritz (d. 1793) was one of the most innovative writers of the late Enlightenment in Germany. A novelist, travel writer, editor, and teacher he is probably best known today for his autobiographical novel "Anton Reiser" (1785-90) and for his treatises on aesthetics, foremost among them "Über die bildende Nachahmung des Schönen" ("On the Formative Imitation of the Beautiful"), published in 1788. In this treatise, Moritz develops the concept of aesthetic autonomy, which became widely known after Goethe included a lengthy excerpt of it in his own "Italian Journey" (1816-17). It was one of the foundational texts of Weimar classicism, and it became pivotal for the development of early Romanticism. In "The Topography of Modernity," Elliott Schreiber gives Moritz the credit he deserves as an important thinker beyond his contributions to aesthetic theory. Indeed, he sees Moritz as an incisive early observer and theorist of modernity. Considering a wide range of Moritz's work including his novels, his writings on mythology, prosody, and pedagogy, and his political philosophy and psychology, Schreiber shows how Moritz's thinking developed in response to the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment and paved the way for later social theorists to conceive of modern society as differentiated into multiple, competing value spheres.".

Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: As New. Thin trade paperback book, 8 1/4" tall, this is a reproduction of original 1890 book reproduced by Cornell University Library digital section-- the orighinal 1890 book was privately printed. This copy has lavender paper covers, 54 pages. NEW CONDITION.Regarding the original book: Originally presented to Court of Appeals in the State of NY as an argument in an elevated railroad case then pending, question involving whether the Dutch Roman law prevailed in Manhattan Island before 1664 under which law the railroad claimed that the state absolutely owned the streets and that adjacent owners had no rights or easements therein. The question depended upon the historical question who under the law of nations discovered and settled New York.
