Neuware - Insanity-in clinical practice as in the popular imagination-is seen as a state of believing things that are not true and perceiving things that do not exist. Most schizophrenics, however, do not act as if they mistake their delusions for reality. In a work of uncommon insight and empathy, Louis A. Sass shatters conventional thinking about insanity by juxtaposing the narratives of delusional schizophrenics with the philosophical writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - From his first election in 1955 to 1976, Mayor Richard J. Daley dominated Chicago's political landscape. A product of the Irish Catholic working class, Daley never lost touch with his roots as he rose through the Democratic Party machine--whose workings he perfected--to become a powerful and enduring political figure. The story of Daley is also the story of Chicago. Faced with issues confronting many American cities in the twentieth century--civil rights, integration, race riots, fiscal crisis, housing, suburban flight, urban renewal--Daley conducted Chicago's business with a steadfast resolve to withstand the many changes that threatened to engulf his city. 'Richard J. Daley' portrays one of the most prominent American mayors in a balanced perspective and sheds new light on his place in urban history.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Virginia E. Schein shatters the stereotype of mothers on welfare. The women she interviewed in cities, towns, and rural areas talked to her about their deep commitment to the children they are raising in poverty, about the abuse they have endured, about their eagerness for meaningful work, and about their inventiveness in stretching scarce dollars. In a policy debate increasingly dominated by shrill, punitive voices, Schein argues that the experiences and the collective wisdom of these women cannot be ignored.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - John Chrysostom, or 'Golden Mouth', was a famous ascetic and preacher of the fourth/fifth century, a controversial bishop of Constantinople, and a brilliant orator - hence the epithet. This is the first comprehensive study of him in the English language in over a century. In the early chapters John Kelly highlights Chrysostom's youthful experiments with asceticism at Antioch in Syria, his six years as a monk and then a recluse in the nearby mountains, and his influential role as Antioch's leading preacher. The central section of the book shows him as a fearlessly outspoken populist bishop of the capital. Kelly focuses on his authoritarian style, his interventions in political crises, and his clashes with the Empress Eudoxia, as well as his efforts to promote the primacy of the see of Constantinople in the east. The final chapters reconstruct the plots that led to Chrysostom's downfall, the drama of his trial, and his exile and death. Golden Mouth also provides fresh analyses of Chrysostom's principal treatises and public addresses, and discussions of his views on monasticism, sexuality and marriage, education, and suffering.
