Cloth, 8vo, 192 pp. From the blurb: "In the wake of the success of his first evocative anthology, Brian Martin has tracked down a further distinguished group of country folk who here recall their lives in surprisingly sharp detail. In their own colourful words, we learn of their personal trials and triumphs, from fighting in the trenches during the Great War to receiving the long-service medal from HM The Queen. Along the way these entertaining characters have met the rich and famous and been party to great sporting occasions, but above all they have been fired by a love of the outdoor life. Their observations of nature are second to none, and they share here their remarkable encounters with wildlife. Through record-breaking cold, drought and even hurricanes, they have seen the sun set on many seasons which might have broken lesser men. They also remember family life as it used to be, with few luxuries but a real sense of community in the countryside. Throughout these tales their character and sense of humour never waver. The collection is profusely illustrated with Philip Murphy's superb, specially commissioned colour paintings as well as the keepers' treasured photographs and letters, none of which has been published before. This book will appeal to the social historian, the naturalist and the country lover; most of all, it will delight anyone who enjoys a good yarn." Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.…

Aggiungi al carrelloCloth, small 8vo, 128, 36 pp. This is a facsimile reprint of the first substantial catalogue of British railway books, which was originally issued in 1893 and sold at one shilling a copy . It includes also the title and subject index which appeared in an 1895 supplement. The catalogue itemizes some 500 works on trains, railways, and railway engineering dating back to the days of the earliest steam locomotives, with most entries being very interestingly annotated by the compiler to place them in their historical context so that, for example, a description of an early prospectus might include a comment on the subsequent fortunes of the railway company concerned. Very interesting not just for the descriptions of the early railway rarities and the sidelights on train and transport history, but also for the prices the books and pamphlets were commanding by the end of the nineteenth century. Very Good in dustwrapper, save for two numbers on front panel of dustwrapper, and stamp and number on front free endpaper.…

Cloth, 8vo, 33 cm, xi, [1], 279, [1] pp, 80 plates. From the blurb - "While many reference books are useful in establishing the date and maker of a piece of gold or silver ware, it is still difficult to trace details about goldsmiths themselves - their place of business, the shop-signs they used, the date they moved from one address to another, or whom they succeeded or followed. Even to find the dates when a particular goldsmith was working is not easy. The main feature of this extraordinarily rich book - first published in a limited edition in 1935 - is an alphabetical list of nearly seven thousand goldsmiths who worked in the City of London between 1200 and 1800. Eighty trade cards are reproduced, and the author explains the meaning of many signs and customs of the goldsmith's trade. Trade cards were primarily used as advertisements, to call attention to the name and whereabouts of the shopkeeper. They are the only contemporary sources which give us some idea of the goldsmiths' signs, the articles made and sold and sometimes even the lay- out of the shop itself. " Chip to head of spine, otherwise Good in a used dustwrapper. …
