The Royal Military Canal runs along the inner South Coast from Shorncliffe in Kent( East of Hythe), to Cliff End ,to the West of Rye in Sussex. It was banked by a military road, which has disappeared in places. Intended as a barrier against invasion by Napoleon, it turned out to be more useful in helping to drain Romney Marsh, Water being pumped up into it from the lower land. No longer navigated but it is taken care of, and fished.
