Aggiungi al carrelloSecond, enlarged, edition. Small octavo. 48 pp. including four woodcut illustrations (pp. 8, 14, 28. 41, 44) showing the declining arc of Trask's life. Publisher's blue wrappers, lettering and an image of Trask within a floriate border on front. Small white spot on front cover and some negligible nibbling to the middle of the fo…re-edge of the first four leaves, else a very clean and bright copy.Leonard Trask was a very enterprising individual. Born in 1905 in Hartford [ME] he suffered a terrible blow in 1833 when his horse threw him. This event laid Trask low and soon the effects of it showed up as a gradual curving of the spine. He went to numerous doctors but to no avail. Adding to his woes were two further accidents both of which exacerbated his back problems. His injury caused him great pain and a serious loss of income. With seven children and a wife dependent upon him he finally published this book, a history of his decline and infirmity, as a way to make some money. At least three editions were issued. When he died a postmortem was done and it showed him to have suffered from ankylosing spondylitis. His book is actually the first published America account of this illness that causes the vertebrae in one's spine to fuse together over time. The extra material in this edition deals with Trask's difficulty with leverage. According to the book. the cover image and its repeat on pp. 44 were from a daguerrotype taken in 1857.

Aggiungi al carrelloA curious account of the life of Leonard Trask (18051861), who suffered serious spinal injury and subsequent deformity following a fall from a horse: "About the year 1833, while Mr. T. was riding on horseback through a neighboring town, a 'luckless hog,' in the highway, hearing the approach of a horseman, took fright, and as is…often the case with that perverse animal, to flee from danger took the opposite direction from a place of safety, and rushed directly under the horse's feet. The affrightened horse, as a matter of course, stumbled and plunged, throwing his rider directly over his head. Mr. T. was thrown with great force upon the ground, receiving the full force of the fall upon his neck and shoulders" (pp.14-15). In the years that followed, his neck and spine began to curve and he began to bow forward, a condition now known as ankylosing spondylitis, which was exacerbated by further accidents in 1840 and 1853. Trask's condition stymied doctors, and the present pamphlet details an array of torturous treatments, such as blistering, cupping, and bleeding. "Being tired of enduring the treatment of physicians of the 'regular practice,' which was only adding pain and torture to the suffering he already endured.Mr. T. had recourse to Dr. J.W. Smith, alias J.W. Kittridge, of the Thompsonian mode of practice." This is almost certainly a reference to the Thomsonian movement, an alternative practice founded by Samuel Thomson in Vermont in the early 19th century. Thomson and his followers spoke of the dangers of bloodletting, advocating instead for botanical remedies that raised the temperature and induced perspiration. Trask's Thomsonian treatment included "a bed full of boiled potatoes, jugs of hot water and bountiful potations of gin and lobelia" (p.20). Trask published works such as this pamphlet in order to supplement his income, and it is now considered the first published work on ankylosing spondylitis, a rare form of arthritis that affects the spine. Scarce in commerce. We can trace just four copies in the auction record since 1946. Not in SABIN. Original yellow wrappers, featuring a wood-engraving of Leonard Trask within a decorative border. Wrappers lightly soiled, chipping to extremities, corners bumped, old folds. Occasional spotting to contents. Overall very good.
