Chemicals used within the aquaculture industry are identified and for each chemical a brief summary of information is provided when available on its intended purpose scale of application the aquacultural sectors and geographic locations of principal use and potential impacts on the environment and human health. Environmental issues arising from the properties of aquacultural chemicals are discussed. The use of most chemicals in aquaculture if carried out properly can be regarded as wholly beneficial with no attendant adverse environmental effects or increased risks to the health of aquacultural workers. Concerns appear warranted however regarding the over use and misuse of certain chemicals for which proper risk assessments with respect to the marine environment have not been conducted. A further legitimate concern and a barrier to conducting an exhaustive review of these practices is the lack of availability of quantitative data on contemporary chemical use in the aquaculture industry. The viability of contemporary aquaculture is contingent on the use of chemicals. Accordingly while the overriding consideration should be minimizing the quantities of chemicals applied most current uses of chemicals are essential. Recognising that chemotherapeutants and pesticides in current use are of varying effectiveness and hazard recommendations are provided to promote the safe and effective use of chemicals in coastal aquaculture. Governmental authorities the scientific community and the aquacultural and pharmaceutical industries all have important roles to play to ensure that chemical use is consistent with protection of environmental quality and human health. In particular mechanisms need to be put in place and enforced for the registration and control of aquacultural chemicals to protect the environment and human health and to ensure the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry. 45 pp.

Quarantine programmes form part of a first time of defence against possible adverse effects resulting from the transboundary movement of aquatic species. Although codes of practice for the international movement of aquatic animals have been developed by various international organisations in many countries they have rarely been applied. Nevertheless they provide a starting point for designing national and regional fish health regulations as well as international agreements aimed at preventing the spread of aquatic animal pathogens. To assist the countries of Asia in formulating technical guidelines on health certification and quarantine for the responsible transboundary movement of aquatic animals FAO in collaboration with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia Pacific (NACA) the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute of the Thai Department of Fisheries (AAHRI) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) conducted a workshop in January 1996 in Bangkok Thailand to review the existing knowledge on aquatic animal quarantine and health certification in Asia and to develop an agreed upon strategy for the formulation of technical guidelines. This document contains ten country papers presented at the workshop some technical background information on general principles of aquatic animal quarantine existing codes of practice the agreed upon strategy and the recommendations of the workshop. 153 pp.

The Centre for Science and Technology of the Non Aligned and other Developing Countries (NAM S&T) Centre) has brought out a publication entitled Management of Natural Disaster in Developing Countries based on the proceedings of the International Workshop on the above subject held in Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Bangkok Thailand 24 27 January 2000. Natural hazards are naturally occurring processes forming an experience to human being depending on where one lives. Floods volcanoes tornadoes bushfires and hurricanes are the possible threats which affect the environment and thus our lives. To find out the outcome of the problem it requires exploring the reason of its origin and the possible antidotes so that it can dwindle to some extent. Planning managing and implementing environmentally sound strategies are the supreme measures in this concern. Also organizing a series of workshops / trainings on management of natural disaster could be an aid in consecutive steps. Hence the above workshop was organised and the proceedings of the workshop have been arranged in a sequential manner. The volume contents mainly aim at identifying areas of mitigating flood cyclone and storm surge disaster. The status reports from well know experts from different countries namely Bangladesh India Indonesia Malaysia Mauritius Nepal Pakistan Syria Thailand and Vietnam are also included in this volume. 202 pp.

The biological action of plant extracts has led epidemiologists to investigate a number of interesting observations in cases of lung liver breast and oral cancers. However the literature pertaining to the role of Trianthema portulacastrum extracts in liver. Cancer is scanty or else is non existent. The objective of the work incorporated in this book is an outcome of the lacunae in the existing scientific knowledge regarding the possible role of the various fractions of T. Portulacastrum in hepatocellular carcinogenesis. The chemopreventive efficacy of the plant was tested in a defined experimental carcinogenesis model. The book has been divided into six chapters. The first phase of experimentation was confined to morphometric evaluation of hepatic lesions. In the second phase of experimentation antioxidant defence enzymes (GSH GST) and drug metabolizing enzymes (Cyt P 450 monoxygenase and UDPGT) were assayed in all experimental and control groups to assess the anti carcinogenic potential of T. Portulacastrum. Lipid peroxidation cytosolic and microsomal were included in the study. The third phase of experimentation involved histopathological and histochemical evaluation of tissue samples. PAS and reticulin patterns were evaluated. The fourth phase of experimentation was confined to electron microscopic study (TEM) to gain ultrastructural insight into the changes brought about by carcinogen and the ability of the extract to restore the tissue to the normal state. In the fifth phase genetic parameters such as chromosomal aberrations G banding patterns of rats were considered to understand the ability of the extract to combat the genotoxic effect of the carcinogen. The outcome of the incorporated in this book is that T. Portulacastrum could prevent neoplastic transformation in rat liver by reduction of nodule incidence reduction of altered foci alteration of patterns of antioxidant and drug metabolizing enzymes accompanied by diminished lipid peroxidation. Moreover at the histopathological and ultrastructural level the plant could maintain nearly normal tissue architecture. Further it could prevent the advent of neoplasia by limiting chromosomal aberrations without any toxic manifestation. 164 pp.

The increase in commercial fisheries production over the last 50 years has been accompanied by an increase in the level of incidental catch and discarding of a number of species. Approximately one quarter of the marine commercial catch destined for human consumption is discarded at sea. This has aroused the concern of a number of groups in society including environmentalists humanitarians and fisheries themselves. This paper examines the economic incentives to discard fish as well as the effects of different management policies on these incentives. The concept of an optimal level of discarding of discussed taking into account the externalities that can be created by discarding. For a fishery manager it is important to understand the role of aquatic macrophytes in inland waters as this will assist in adjusting strategies for optimising capture fisheries. Fish crayfish some mammals and birds and some other organisms use macrophytes to their benefit such as spawning nursery feeding grounds and as a refuge. Macrophytes play an important role in the fish food chain especially as a substrate for aquatic organisms on which the fish feed. Aquatic plants have a controlling effect on prey predator interrelationship have an important function in water quality and hence can be used in biomanipulation for improving fish stocks. Special plant communities such as floating meadows of varzea and igapo are essential for fish and fisheries in the Amazon basin while sudd formation may lead to the reduction in fish stocks. Invasive and nuisance aquatic plants both floating and submersed also interfere when present on a large scale. Fish can be used for controlling aquatic macrophytes and through their control also for the control of hosts and vectors of human water borne diseases.
