The Centre for Science and Technology of the Non Aligned and other Developing Countries (NAM S&T) Centre) has brought out a publication entitled Management of Natural Disaster in Developing Countries based on the proceedings of the International Workshop on the above subject held in Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Bangkok Thailand 24 27 January 2000. Natural hazards are naturally occurring processes forming an experience to human being depending on where one lives. Floods volcanoes tornadoes bushfires and hurricanes are the possible threats which affect the environment and thus our lives. To find out the outcome of the problem it requires exploring the reason of its origin and the possible antidotes so that it can dwindle to some extent. Planning managing and implementing environmentally sound strategies are the supreme measures in this concern. Also organizing a series of workshops / trainings on management of natural disaster could be an aid in consecutive steps. Hence the above workshop was organised and the proceedings of the workshop have been arranged in a sequential manner. The volume contents mainly aim at identifying areas of mitigating flood cyclone and storm surge disaster. The status reports from well know experts from different countries namely Bangladesh India Indonesia Malaysia Mauritius Nepal Pakistan Syria Thailand and Vietnam are also included in this volume. 202 pp.

Materials and methods. iii. Results and discussion. References. Index. The biological action of plant extracts has led epidemiologists to investigate a number of interesting observations in cases of lung liver breast and oral cancers. However the literature pertaining to the role of Trianthema portulacastrum extracts in liver. Cancer is scanty or else is non existent. The objective of the work incorporated in this book is an outcome of the lacunae in the existing scientific knowledge regarding the possible role of the various fractions of T. Portulacastrum in hepatocellular carcinogenesis. The chemopreventive efficacy of the plant was tested in a defined experimental carcinogenesis model. The book has been divided into six chapters. The first phase of experimentation was confined to morphometric evaluation of hepatic lesions. In the second phase of experimentation antioxidant defence enzymes (GSH GST) and drug metabolizing enzymes (Cyt P 450 monoxygenase and UDPGT) were assayed in all experimental and control groups to assess the anti carcinogenic potential of T. Portulacastrum. Lipid peroxidation cytosolic and microsomal were included in the study. The third phase of experimentation involved histopathological and histochemical evaluation of tissue samples. PAS and reticulin patterns were evaluated. The fourth phase of experimentation was confined to electron microscopic study (TEM) to gain ultrastructural insight into the changes brought about by carcinogen and the ability of the extract to restore the tissue to the normal state. In the fifth phase genetic parameters such as chromosomal aberrations G banding patterns of rats were considered to understand the ability of the extract to combat the genotoxic effect of the carcinogen. The outcome of the incorporated in this book is that T. Portulacastrum could prevent neoplastic transformation in rat liver by reduction of nodule incidence reduction of altered foci alteration of patterns of antioxidant and drug metabolizing enzymes accompanied by diminished lipid peroxidation. Moreover at the histopathological and ultrastructural level the plant could maintain nearly normal tissue architecture. Further it could prevent the advent of neoplasia by limiting chromosomal aberrations without any toxic manifestation. 164 pp.

While stock taking the life time achievements of Professor Hiralal Chaudhuri in the domain of research teaching and training one has to go through the editor's write up detailed in preface and introduction. Three manuals viz. aquaculture limnology and ichthyology form an integral and interrelated chain of activities and may be taken as a single unit. In fact the success of the Professor in various facets of aquaculture promoted Central Government to get hundreds of budding aquaculturists of all ranks to be trained under him and the manuals aided in his lectures. In fact the Professor's various national and international assignments and responsibilities with FAO/UNDP ESCAP SEAFDEC NACA/IDRC and others involved him in coordinated research training and teaching activities. Hundreds of officers were trained and even the high valued Ph.D and M.S. degree researchers had to be guided by him in their researches. Besides his experience in teaching since 1943 promoted him to draw outlines for presentation of various multiple details of subjects to the students through lecture notes transparencies for over head projector colour slides and herbarium sheets. The three manuals provide all such data and information. His command over the languages of English French German and Latin helped him to explain various scientific terms and significance to the students very lucidly and convincingly. The students undergraduate and post graduate assessed the quality of his teaching as the best among all the groups of lecturers in evaluating their performances which was a system in the university of the Philippines at Los Banos. As such the manuals have immense value. In preparation of this treatise on manuals the editor had to col.

Evaluation research a theoretical view. 4. Methodology for formative evaluation. 5. Evaluation of the insecticide resistance management programme. 6. Summary and conclusion. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. There is scanty information available about the impact of different Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes implemented in India since 1974 75 and whatever information is documented is based on the project reports of the implementing agencies which lack rigorousness of social science research based on scientific methods to measure the implementation and outcome of IPM Programmes for decision making purposes. The importance of evaluation research to determine the merit and worth of agricultural programmes in general and IPM programme in particular has not caught the attention of programme planners and programme implementing agencies in India as is the case with developed countries of the world. Programme evaluation evolved primarily in the United States of America and became a semi professional discipline. The book Evaluation of Insecticide Resistance Management Programme Theory and Practice is about Insecticide Resistance Management (IRM) based IPM programme. The methodologies for evaluation of IPM programmes are documented in the book. It covers the content and process areas of IRM programme implemented in ten cotton growing states of India by the Ministry of Agriculture Government of India under the Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC) Mini Mission (MM II) programme since 2002. The development implementation and impact of IPM programmes is discussed in the book. The book gives an overview of cotton growing scenario in India and the losses caused by insect pests. The outcome of formative evaluation of IRM programme in Punjab is presented as a case study. The book shall serve the biological scientists (entomologists) and social scientists (extension educationists anthropologists and economists) associated with IPM innovation development process. It will provide the feedback to agriculture policy planners about the worth of IPM programmes at farmers level and the role of evaluation research in agricultural programmes. The book is a significant contribution of the extension education discipline to the multidisciplinary field of IPM. At post graduate level the students will find the book as a useful guide for planning and conducting diffusion and evaluation research in the dynamic field of IPM. 278 pp.

Acarines are prominent pests of field crops granaries warehouses and animals (arthropods birds) causing heavy financial losses. House dust acarines are notorious agents of allergic reactions in human beings and other mammals. Acarines because of their small size and cryptic habitat are difficult to detect and hence most of the time infestations are overlooked. Once established in a new area certain biological characteristics like high fecundity various modes of reproduction short life cycles a myriad of dispersal techniques and adaptability to diverse ecological conditions allow rapid escalation to pest status. On the other hand acarines are among the major resources for biological control of various classes of pests including insects nematodes and weeds. These widely distributed microscopic animals ranging from free living to parasitic forms and terrestrial to aquatic forms require specialized techniques for handling. The literature regarding their biodiversity collection rearing biology etc. are scattered and most of the time unavailable to scientists interested to work on them. Hence a comprehensive book on agricultural acarology is prepared which covers all aspects of acarine biodiversity acarological techniques and their role as bio control agent in an abridged form. The book is divided into three sections. Acarine biodiversity contains six chapters one each on plant stored soil house dust parasitic and water mites. In second section details on techniques of collection and extraction preparation and mounting labeling and housing the collection culturing counting and bioassay are given in individual chapters. Information related to predatory potential of acarines against insects nematodes and weeds is included in third section in three chapters. The book has been liberally furnished with illustrations for better understanding. An extensive list of references and glossary are also provided at the end of the book. 356 pp.
