In dem Buch wird eine Konzeption vertreten, wonach das Erklären von E darin besteht, aufzuzeigen, dass E Resultat eines nomischen Musters ist, das im konkreten Fall instantiiert wurde. Solche Muster beschreiben intrinsische Dispositionen bestimmter Objekte oder Systeme und weisen eine gewisse Invarianz gegenüber Interventionen auf. Je größer diese (lokale und globale) Invarianz ist, umso besser ist die Erklärung, denn umso zentraler sind die zugrundeliegenden kausalen Mechanismen bzw. strukturellen Zusammenhänge, die das Muster darstellt. It shows that style is a useful category in br…idging the gap between single parameter variation and social identity. Social positioning, i.e., finding one's place in society, is one of its motivating forces. Various aspects of the expression of stylistic features are focused on, from language choice and linguistic variation in a narrow sense to practices of social categorization, pragmatics patterns, preferences for specific communicative genres, rhetorical practices including prosodic features, and aesthetic choices and preferences for specific forms of taste (looks, clothes, music, etc.). These various features of expression are connected to multimodal stylistic indices through talk; thus, styles emerge from discourse. Styles are adapted to changing contexts, and develop in the course of social processes. The analytical perspective chosen proposes an alternative to current approaches to variability under the influence of the so-called variationist paradigm. 524 pp. Englisch.

However, until re…cently, research on sign languages was limited to a number of (Western) sign languages. Before we can truly answer the question of whether modality effects do indeed cause less structural variation, it is necessary to investigate the similarities and differences that exist between sign languages in more detail and, especially, to include in this investigation less studied sign languages. The current research climate is testimony to a surge of interest in the study of a geographically more diverse range of sign languages. The volume reflects that climate and brings together work by scholars engaging in comparative sign linguistics research. The 11 articles discuss data from many different signed and spoken languages and cover a wide range of topics from different areas of grammar including phonology (word pictures), morphology (pronouns, negation, and auxiliaries), syntax (word order, interrogative clauses, auxiliaries, negation, and referential shift) and pragmatics (modal meaning and referential shift). In addition to this, the contributions address psycholinguistic issues, aspects of language change, and issues concerning data collection in sign languages, thereby providing methodological guidelines for further research. Although some papers use a specific theoretical framework for analyzing the data, the volume clearly focuses on empirical and descriptive aspects of sign language variation. 416 pp. Englisch.

Die erstmals vollständig…e, quellenkritische Edition der historischen amerikanischen Verfassungen, beginnend am 5. Januar 1776 mit der Verfassung von New Hampshire und endend wenige Wochen vor Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges, 1860, ist ein Meilenstein für die Geschichtswissenschaft und Verfassungsgeschichte. Die siebenbändige Ausgabe enthält rund 500 originalsprachige Verfassungstexte, Verfassungszusätze, gescheiterte Verfassungen und Verfassungsentwürfe. Die Texte wurden auf der Grundlage der mitunter seltenen Originaldrucke der offiziellen Staats- oder Konventsdrucker unter Hinzuziehung der Originalmanuskripte, soweit noch vorhanden, ediert und annotiert. Die erstmals in eine derartige Sammlung aufgenommenen gescheiterten Verfassungen und Verfassungszusätze waren in der Regel durch einen Konvent zustande gekommen. Teilweise wurden sie durch das Volk oder die nachfolgende Legislative zurückgewiesen, teilweise wurde der fragliche Staat nie oder nicht zu diesem Zeitpunkt in die Union aufgenommen, so etwa Deseret 1849, Franklin/ Frankland 1784/85, New Ireland 1780, New Mexico 1850 oder (West-)Florida 1810. Etliche Dokumente wurden zusätzlich in nicht-englischen Sprachen (Deutsch, Französisch, Spanisch, aber auch Holländisch, Norwegisch und Walisisch) veröffentlicht, um den ethnischen Minderheiten des jeweiligen Staates oder der Union die Möglichkeit zu geben, sich mit der Verfassung vertraut zu machen. So sind beispielsweise die deutsche Fassung der 'Articles of Confederation' von 1777, der ersten nationalen Verfassung, und die spanische Fassung der 'Constitution of California' von 1849 in der Edition enthalten. Neben der authentischen Reproduktion der verfassungsrelevanten Texte wird der umfangreiche Amendierungsprozess dokumentiert. Erst das Studium der Verfassungsänderungen und Verfassungsergänzungen vervollständigt die Kenntnis der Verfassungsentwicklung der amerikanischen Bundesstaaten. Mit diesen Bänden werden die zahlreichen Verfassungszusätze, die in keiner früheren Sammlung komplett veröffentlicht worden sind, erstmals ediert.
