Peter Zimmermann's paintings reinterpret the traditional art of painting in relation with modernism and Color Field Movement. Working process of the artist begins with gathering the visuals collected by the artist physically or by scanning, and then evolves by deforming these visuals at computer. Images that become unrecognizable are transferred on canvas and given a form by means of colorful resin poured on them. It can be said that these compositions of Zimmermann, famous for the use of epoxy for more than twenty years, in a kind of alchemical interaction, are the products of his talent on the perception of color and light. Neshat's "Mourners" from her The Book of Kings series, inspired by the epic Shahnameh by Ferdowsi (940-1020), are based on portraits of individuals residing in the slums of Cairo, where the promise of freedom and democracy following the uprising against the Mubarak regime failed to materialize. Inscribed with Persian handwriting, the artist's black and white portraits confront the viewer with human bodies that face a struggle against hegemony in this overly politicized region marked by covert violence and suppression. Schwerfel writes, "This art, beyond the political engagement of Iran's Green Movement and the mystique of the Arab Spring, is shaped by two opposing rhetorical systems that currently feud with each other on a global scale." A group of paintings are made with a wide brush on which he put the seven colors next to each other. He then moved the brush around, creating patterns that are reminiscent of a kaleidoscope. Another group bears a woven compositional pattern created through crossing four vertical and three horizontal bands of color. What connects the paintings is rather a compositional scheme. As for color, those ten paintings produce very different results in terms of atmosphere, brightness, and accessibility. Bernard Frize is not a painter who likes to be visible within his paintings. The subjective gesture that connects the painting with its maker seems far away from his approach. The painter is rather skeptical about the possibilities of expression. Despite this, there is an active painter's hand visible--the works do not appear neutral, or as if no human being was involved in making them. Color is a paradox: it does "not particularly interest" him, despite its being a vital raw material for his work. By using color in a non-hierarchical, experimental, technical-mechanical manner, Frize lends his works a certain dynamic through contradictions. Concentrating on the process of production of the painting rather than the elements like color, composition, and symbols offers a nice challenge to the viewer: the challenge of seeing/ hearing the "pictorial score." Kneffel engages with the legacies of three exiled figures who lived in Istanbul: architect Bruno Taut, sculptor Rudolf Belling, and designer Margarete Schuette-Lihotzky. Their iconic works-the Bosphorus house designed by Taut, Belling's Inoenue sculpture and Skulptur 49, and Schuette-Lihotzky's pioneering Frankfurter Kueche-reappear under Kneffel's painterly veil of drops, bubbles, and brushstrokes, questioning whether the world is ever truly familiar. Enriched with an essay by Julia Voss, along with studio and installation views, the catalogue situates Haymatlos within Kneffel's broader practice and her celebrated retrospective STILL in Germany. Views of the Theory of Evolution, 1837-1874", she received fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Akademie Schloss Solitude from 2001 onward. From 2007 to 2017, she headed the art department of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and from 2014 to 2017 she also became deputy head of the arts section. She taught art criticism at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at Philipps University in Marburg. After 10 years of newspaper work, she returned to academia. Her work has been awarded prestigious prizes, including the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society and the Sigmund Freud Prize for scientific prose of the German Academy for Language and Poetry. In 2013, she curated the exhibition "1938. Art, Artists, Politics" at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt. Her research focuses on the history of abstraction, the connections between evolutionary theory and culture, restitution and provenance, theory and history of the art market and art criticism. Combining arts of Sarkis, the conceptual artist and Bu]lent Erkmen, the pioneer of graphic design in Turkey, it features a text by the co-curator Ceren Erdem. In Mirror, a space for refractions, proliferations, screams, and silence opens as the artist's timeless works from different periods that mark the time encounter the new works for this exhibition. Placing the theory of memory at the core of his practice, Sarkis is introducing a layered critical view to today's social and political issues by inviting witnesses from history. The works transform the art's faculty of bringing the traces of the past to the present into the competence in conjuring up the future through artistic production. A battle scene from the 15th century and the responding lightning provoke the space as they transmute into neon installations. In this space, golden rainbows, images of which histories are touched by Kintsugi technique, moments captured and enlightened by stained glasses, spoils of war coated with lipstick convene and live in a mirror. AUTHORS: Albert Bitran (b. 1931, Istanbul; d. 2018, Paris) forged his identity as an artist in Paris, where he arrived at the age of 17 to study architecture. Clotilde Scordia is a Paris-based art historian, art critic and curator, graduated in Art history from Paris-Sorbonne. She mainly works about Turkish art and non-European avant-garde (especially from MENA area). She is the author of Istanbul-Montparnasse. Les Peintres Turcs de l'Ecole de Paris (Paris, Declinaison, 2021) and her monograph about Turkish artist Nejad Devrim, former resident at Cite Falguiere in the 1950s, was published in 2022. Titled 100…Screams: After Munch, this powerful series draws inspiration from the iconic figure in Edvard Munch's The Scream, an image that has haunted Sarkis since childhood and echoed throughout his oeuvre. Eschewing brushes, the artist applies white and red oil paints directly from the tube to paper, capturing the raw immediacy and velocity of a scream. Produced shortly after the works were made, the photographic reproduction by the artist emphasise their shifting presence over time and across geographies. Spanning the years from Sarkis' birth in 1938 to the present and beyond, this autobiographical publication offers a visceral reflection on artistic memory, trauma, and transformation through one of modern art's most enduring motifs. Text in English and Turkish. AUTHOR: Starting his journey with painting, Sarkis expanded his interest to include sculpture and audiovisual installations. He uses a variety of techniques and material from photography, video, to painting, sculpture, stained glass, and neon lights. In his hand, a neon sign may take the shape of letters, sometimes a poem or a watchword, in other cases an angel or just its wings. He combines the intellectual tradition of Western and Eastern cultures which have been historically excluded, addressing issues of time, memory, and identity. Many of his works refer to a dramatic moment in the history of humankind such as war. Kriegsschatz is a key concept in his art, a German term referring to war spoils; as an act of irony, he de-contextualises and gives new meanings to objects such as a cut hand or a bullet: Those objects are transformed to reflect memory opening to future and related feeling of triumph, suffering, and perhaps shame. Sarkis is awarded the 1967 Prix de la Peinture a la Biennale de Paris and the 1991 Grand Prix National de Sculpture.
