When they first met at the Cornish School in Seattle in the 1930s, Cage was 26 to Cunningham's 19, their relationship was purely that of teacher and student, and Cage was also very much married.It was in Chicago that their romantic relationship would begin. Cage was teaching at Moholy-Nagy's School of Design when Cunningham passed through town as a dancer with the Martha Graham Company on March 14, 1942. The letters begin in January, but a week after Cunningham's performance, the essential correspondence begins. Cage's letters to Cunningham are passionate, distraught, romantic and confused, occasionally containing snippets of poetry and song. They are also more than love letters, with intimations that resonate with our experience of the later John Cage.Love, Icebox takes its shape from these letters transcribed, chronologically ordered and in some instances reproduced in facsimile. Laura Kuhn, Cage's assistant from 1986 to 1992 and now longtime director of the John Cage Trust, adds an introduction, postscript and running commentary. Photographic illustrations of their final 18th St loft, as well as personal and household objects left behind, remind us of the substance and rituals of a long-shared life.

A career retrospective on the conceptually complex sculpture of the Canadian PostminimalistCompiling documentation of nearly 40 abstract steel sculptures, as well as drawings and paintings, this monograph introduces the work of Canadian sculptor Royden Rabinowitch (born 1943). Rabinowitch's approach t…o sculpture is inspired by his admiration for mathematician Henri Poincaré and his distinction between abstract space and the space of ordinary human experience. Though the forms of his abstract metal and wooden sculptures recall the work of Minimalists such as Richard Serra, his aims greatly diverge from theirs. Grease Cone, reproduced here, consists of a black metal cone covered in grease. The cone itself recalls the purity of form of the Minimalists, but the unevenly applied grease expresses Rabinowitch's concern with human space insofar as it alters the shape of the sculpture, as a whole, into a messier, asymmetrical form.

Matta-Clark used discarded, scaveng…ed materials-old pieces of wood, doors-to subdivide the space inside the dumpster, creating corridors and small rooms within the container. Dancers and artists moved around the space, their pedestrian movements activating the sculpture and captured in a Super-8 film of the piece. Matta-Clark is best known for his building cuts and architectural interventions. Because of the nature of this work and its context-sited in spaces abandoned or slated for demolition-Matta-Clark's "anarchitecture" was almost necessarily ephemeral, surviving as only documentation and sculptural sections. Open House (1972) is the only still-extant architectural piece by Matta-Clark. Gordon Matta-Clark: Open House is the first publication to focus on this crucial piece by the artist, using it as a way into his complex body of work. Walther's "Werklager" has been on display at MAMCO Geneva almost without interruption since the museum opened more than 20 years ago. At the heart of this collection is Walther's 1. Werksatz, or First Work Set, series of wearable fabric objects from 1963-69. Walther described these objects as "instruments for processes"; activated by bodies (pulled through openings, connected by straps, tied and fastened in) or while they lay dormant, they constitute a form of participatory minimal sculpture. Emphasizing process and activation, these pieces circumvent "the seemingly inviolable contract that a work is an object produced by an artist," as the artist put it.
