Octavo, brown cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 189 pp. Fine in a Fair just jacket that has been reinforced with cello tape. From dust jacket: From Jacksonville to St. Augustine, from Key West to Cross Creek, roving Miami Herald reporter Nixon Smiley is familiar with every highway and hidden back road, and with the places and personalities that have played their part in the colorful history of Florida, his native state. Not a travel guide in the conventional sense, this book is rather a theoretical trip around the Florida peninsula, conducted by a student of history and human nature. Through personal interviews and his first-hand research, Nixon Smiley has added a new dimension to the lives of such matchless characters as Henry Flagler; Harriet Beecher Stowe; Thomas Edison; Sadie McLain, the Ox-Woman; architect Addison Mizner, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The fiery Minorcans, Mrs. Fuller's water hyacinths, Fort San Marcos, the Celestial Railroad, the "Millionaires' Club" at Boca Raton, the Singing Tower, and Sexton's "junk mountain" -- all belong to the heritage of this unique and fascinating state. They come to life as never before when described by the author in the intimate, informal style that has made him a favorite of newspaper readers for so many years. Says Mr. Smiley: "The eighteen titles in this volume are built around real places and real people, together with my impressions after nearly a quarter-century of traveling about the state. If I have written with enthusiasm, it is because I have enjoyed my experiences in seeking out the interesting and picturesque and writing about them for newspaper readers. I sought to take them to the scenes and share with them what I saw and felt. This book I have written with the same feeling. Octavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), 159 pp. Very Good, with light soiling to top page edges; in a Very Good+, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear. From dustjacket: Come take a trip through Florida with Hampton Dunn -- a trip that will not just take you to the best-known attractions of the Sunshine State, but rather to some out-of-the-way places where interesting and unusual things can be seen. Hampton Dunn tells in seventy-five vignettes that sparkle like a fresh mountain brook not only of places, but also of the people of the state, and he spans the time from the prehistoric mammoth to modern-day Florida. Whether he talks about General Grant's house in Longwood (That Grant didn't build), the pioneer botantist Alvah Chapman of Apalachicola, the fabulous Boca Raton Hotel & Club, Florida's oldest Baptist Missionary Church in Campbellton, Frederick Delius in Florida, Al Capone in Miami Beach, or a host of other subjects, Dunn is always informative and entertaining. Even as an armchair trip, reading Florida Sketches will be purely enjoyable. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Americana, American History, U. S. History. bslic.

Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), photo. illustrated endpapers,[160] pp. Very Good, with bookplate; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Miami, the "Magic City," was just a settlement near Fort Dallas in Dade County in the early 1890s when Julia Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler to extend his railroad and to start a city at the new end of the line. Flagler's surveyors began work in 1896 -- and Miami was off to a good start. Yesterday's Miami is a photographic chronicle of the city and its sister communities, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, and others. It shows the rapid progress made in such a short period, and portrays vividly the pulsating life of the city. Nixon Smiley tells a fascinating story of Miami and its people in the introduction and explanatory captions -- a story of the mighty and the powerless, the saintly and the crooked, the famous, infamous, and unknown ones. From Fort Dallas to Lemon City to the establishment of the city of Miami, the book covers all important events in its history -- early settlers, World War I, the Boom, the bust, Depression, World War II and beyond; early railroading, aviation, automobiles; politics, education, sports (even the first Orange Bowl game), entertainment, religion, etc.; and all other human activities that make a city a living organism; without which a city would be no more than an accumulation of wood, brick, and stone. Richard Hoit's photographs, supplemented by many other pictures from various sources, form the core of this book which conserves over two hundred and fifty images of the past that otherwise might have been lost or moldered in files and archives, inaccessible to all but a few. For the native, Yesterday's Miami is a nostalgic record of the past; for the newcomer or tourist, it offers the historical background necessary to understand the soul of a city. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Americana, U.S.-iana, Photography, Miami nslic.
