Of dat bericht nu per trekschuit, koerier te paard, postkoets, (brom)fiets, vliegtuig, telefoon, of e-mail werd overgebracht, het zal veruit de meeste ontvangers met trots en blijdschap hebben vervuld. Wie waren de geleerden, en eerder ook kunstenaars, wie de eer van een benoeming in dit prestigieuze gezelschap ten deel is gevallen? In dit boek zijn alle namen van leden, zowel de Nederlanders als de buitenlanders terug te vinden, met vermelding van datum en categorie van benoeming en vakgebied. Cultuurhistorisch belangwekkende informatie. Ingegaan wordt bovendien op het vergrijzingsaspect dat voor zoveel verenigingen en organisaties een probleem lijkt te vormen. Daartoe worden de effecten van verschillende rekruteringsstrategieën met elkaar vergeleken. Het boek is instructief voor hen die enige tijd de bestuurlijke verantwoordelijkheid voor een vereniging of genootschap dragen.
