It was in fact the object of ferocious fighting from 9 to 13 June 1944 with two elite units confronting each other: the American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne and the Fallschirmjager of the FJR 6. General Maxwell Taylor, commanding the 101st Airborne used the whole of his division with its four airborne regiments but also all the supporting units, its four airborne artillery batteries, its medical units and its logistics to encircle the town and to chase out the German paratroopers under Major Freiherr von der Heydte; they left after fierce fighting during the night of 11-12 June only to return the next day with the 17. SS-Pz-Gren-Div. "Goetz von Berlinchingen". The German losses as well as those of the Americans were very heavy, as were those of the civilians (the town centre still bears the signs). This book gives a detailed account of the Battle of Carentan. The accounts given by the participants in the battle enable the feats of arms to be recorded; they are always poignant, moving even. In a few hours on 6 June 1944, 150 000 Allied soldiers had set foot on Norman soil. Facing them, an equivalent number of German soldiers, but of whom only a third were operational on this front. Thus passed away the last male scion of the noble line of the Beauvalets, ennobled in 1702 by Louis XIV, and who in 1686 founded a the little domain at Durecu, which did not at the time bear that name. For three generations, the Beauvalets struggled using their wealth to hang on to this so dearly acquired nobility. The Lord of Durecu's grand-daughter, Caroline Avice de Sortosville, inherited the Durecu domain, and during the Terreur, married a young Republican officer, Francois Clement Boyer de Choisy, who came from a typically old noble family, since it had always been devoted to serving in the army. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment landed on drop zone C near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, and the 82nd Airborne Division landed at Sainte-Mere-Eglise. A group of about 100 men gathered under General Taylor, who commanded the division at drop zone C, and Lieutenant-Colonel Ewell, who commanded the 3rd battalion of the 506th Regiment, and they moved towards Utah Beach to take control of the exit. On the way they neutralised a German strong point near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. Another group of parachutists destroyed a battery west of the town. Meanwhile at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, 12km north of Carentan, the 82nd Airborne Division took the Germans by surprise. The planes that carried the men of the 82nd American Airborne Division were fired upon when they approached the western coast of Cotentin; some were damaged and others slightly scattered. Around 1am a house was burning and as the alarm bell rang, people of Sainte-Mere-Eglise attempted to put out the fire. The first parachutists fell on the town in a total chaos. Civilians sheltered in their houses and the Germans shot several parachutists. Outside the town Lieutenant-Colonel Krause, who commanded the 3rd Battalion of the 505th Pachutist Infantry Regiment, gathered 158 men, but the Americans encircled the town and captured Sainte-Mere-Eglise at dawn, taking about 30 prisoners. Il a declare que desormais leur epopee appartenait a l'Histoire. Le general Risso nous a quitte le 24 novembre 2005 et le commandant Lorillon le 17 fevrier 2013. Il restait alors deux survivants des pilotes du Normandie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : Jean Sauvage et Gael Taburet. Jean Sauvage est decede le 22 aout 2014 et Gael Taburet le 10 fevrier 2017. Ce jour-la, avec sa disparition, une page de gloire de l'Armee de l'Air a ete tournee. Ces 96 heros appartiennent desormais a l'Histoire. Francois Robinard a recueilli les souvenirs de cinq d'entre eux, sauves par l'histoire, principalement ceux du General Risso. Ils constituent la base de cet ouvrage.
