Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. p/b 348 pages, condition is very good. PREFACE. Workers in the field of Russian and Soviet studies have long seen the need for a book on the Soviet Union written by experts but addressed to the general reader. This book aims to fill that need. Twenty-five experts in their respective…branches of the field have contributed chapters on major aspects of Soviet life combining fact and interpretation in ways designed to attract both students and the wider lay public. This is a book for anyone wanting to understand the Soviet Union today. Perhaps I should stress what the book is not. It is not a textbook - not in the comprehensive and mainly factual sense of the term. It is more personal than that - more interpretive, more varied in approach, concerned less with "covering" the subject than with responding to the questions most commonly asked of experts. Nor is this book a scholarly monograph, written by specialists for other specialists. The notes appended to the chapters are there only to identify the source of a particular fact or quotation, to indicate where dedicated investigators might look further in the matter at hand, or to provide a little supplementary information. Most readers, therefore, will quickly pass over the notes. Although the chapters were written by different authors and can be read as self-contained essays, they are arranged in chronological and then thematic order, and so are perhaps better read in succession, as presented. A selection of both textbooks and more specialized works in the field of Soviet studies will be found at the book's end. These "Further Reading Suggestions," carefully prepared with the advice of the authors, are meant to assist students and others determined to know more. We hope that this may be everybody. Understanding the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the biggest country in the world and one of its two most powerful, is no easy task.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 254 pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Tables. Charts. Notes. Tabular Data. Cover has some wear and soiling. Ruth Salzman Adams (1921-2005) was an arms-control activist and a former longtime editor of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, who devoted most of h…er life to ensuring that a broad array of scientists and scholars focused on solutions for world peace. Ruth Adams became assistant editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1953 and worked closely with the editor, Eugene Rabinowitch. Adams was an early participant in the Pugwash peace movement, which brought together American and Soviet scientists concerned about the nuclear threat. She was the only woman present in 1957 at the first Pugwash conference in Nova Scotia, sponsored by such eminent scientists as Albert Einstein and Linus Pauling. In the later decades of the Cold War she "frequently had a facilitating role in maintaining the flow of policy-oriented communication and understanding on nuclear issues between senior Western and Soviet scientists". Ruth Adams was a Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, her edited and co-edited books include works on human migrations, the anti-ballistic missile, and contemporary China. "Collection of papers presented at a series of symposia on the medical consequences of nuclear weapons and nuclear war."--Introduction. Among the participants were Robert Jay Lifton, John Kenneth Galbraith, Herbert Scoville, Kosta Tsipis, Carson Mark, and Joseph Rotblat. Among the topics address are Arms Race, Nuclear Weapons, Radioactive Fallout, Atomic Bomb, Survivors, Burn Casualties, Infection, and Communicable Diseases. Robert Jay Lifton (Drawings) (illustratore).

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very Good; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science,1988. The June, 1988 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, that being Volume 44, Number 5. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover or title page since 1947, two…years after the publication's inception - here shows the time to be six minutes of midnight as of mid-1988. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 56 pp. Near Fine. Only the merest touch of age toning - the page paper was of high quality. No other notable flaws, at all. A handsome example; see all scans. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change,[2] and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. Feature articles in this vintage1988 issue: Third World Missiles; Nunn and ALPS; Gorbachev's Trade Reforms; Perestroika; more. See scan of contents page. The always stunningly pedigreed contributors are shown there as well. Very scarce, in any condition. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box - not a bag. LPR59.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Near Fine; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science,1976. The October, 1976 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, that being Volume 32, Number 8. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover or title page since 1947, t…wo years after the publication's inception - here shows the time to be nine minutes of midnight as of late 1976. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 48 pp. Near Fine; original addressee label on front cover, tiny strip sot on rear cover, no other flaws. Even the inevitable page paper toning is almost nonexistent. Contents immaculate. Feature articles in this vintage 1976 issue: Nuclear Sabotage - with five tables of incidents; Peaceful Explosions; Nuclear Energy Illusions & Realities; Nuclear Responsibility - by President Jimmy Carter; Numbers Game; B-1 Bomber - Still Flying or Defunded?; Congressional Buck-Passing; Public Policy for Solar Heating and Cooling; Britain and the Bomb (bbok). See scan of contents. Contributors include Bernard T. Feld; Jimmy Carter; Fred C. Iklé; F.A. Long; Michael Flood; Alan S. Hirschberg; Samuel H. Day, Jr.; Barry R. Schneider; Elizabeth Young. Very, very scarce as the original monthly softcover issue. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box - not a bag. LPR31.
