Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Fluctuating parameters appear in a variety of physical systems and phenomena. They typically come either as random forces/sources, or advecting velocities, or media (material) parameters, like refraction index, conductivity, diffusivity, etc. The well known example of Brownian particle suspended in fluid and subjected to random molecular bombardment laid the foundation for modern stochastic calculus and statistical physics. Other important examples include turbulent transport and diffusion of particle-tracers (pollutants), or continuous densities (''oil slicks''), wave propagation and scattering in randomly inhomogeneous media, for instance light or sound propagating in the turbulent atmosphere. Such models naturally render to statistical description, where the input parameters and solutions are expressed by random processes and fields. The fundamental problem of stochastic dynamics is to identify the essential characteristics of system (its state and evolution), and relate those to the input parameters of the system and initial data. This raises a host of challenging mathematical issues. One could rarely solve such systems exactly (or approximately) in a closed analytic form, and their solutions depend in a complicated implicit manner on the initial-boundary data, forcing and system's (media) parameters . In mathematical terms such solution becomes a complicated nonlinear functional of random fields and processes. Part I gives mathematical formulation for the basic physical models of transport, diffusion, propagation and develops some analytic tools. Part II sets up and applies the techniques of variational calculus and stochastic analysis, like Fokker-Plank equation to those models, to produce exact or approximate solutions, or in worst case numeric procedures. The exposition is motivated and demonstrated with numerous examples. Part III takes up issues for the coherent phenomena in stochastic dynamical systems, described by ordinary and partial differential equations, like wave propagation in randomly layered media (localization), turbulent advection of passive tracers (clustering). Each chapter is appended with problems the reader to solve by himself (herself), which will be a good training for independent investigations.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - While extensive research has been performed on many technological aspects of permeable reactive barriers and a number of contaminants have so far been successfully treated by PRB systems, long-term performance has not been extensively considered and little is known about the processes influencing long-term behaviour. This gap in our knowledge is all the more disadvantageous as design life has a decisive influence on the economic viability of PRBs. The book describes methods for evaluation and enhancement of the long-term performance of PRB systems, especially of those targeting heavy metals, specifically uranium, and organic contaminants by sorption and/or precipitation mechanisms. Major topics in the book are: - Selection and characterisation of suitable reactive materials - Characterisation of the relevant contaminant attenuation processes - Developing new contaminant-binding chemical compounds ('ligands') - Accelerated testing methods to assess the long-term performance of the attenuation mechanisms in PRBs - Evaluation of the influence of site characteristics on PRB performance - Monitoring of existing and new field installations - Coupling of electrokinetic techniques and PRB systems - Large-scale laboratory and field tests and their results It addresses the long-term performance of PRBs, an important feature of this novel remediation technology, systematically. It deals extensively with heavy metal removal, with special emphasis on uranium. A number of case studies, experiences with large-scale modelling and test site experiments provide insight into the practical application of the results. This volume will contribute to the science underpinning groundwater remediation, and this will result in the improvement of quality of life and health and safety.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This monograph is the first and an initial introduction to the theory of bitopological spaces and its applications. In particular, different families of subsets of bitopological spaces are introduced and various relations between two topologies are analyzed on one and the same set; the theory of dimension of bitopological spaces and the theory of Baire bitopological spaces are constructed, and various classes of mappings of bitopological spaces are studied. The previously known results as well the results obtained in this monograph are applied in analysis, potential theory, general topology, and theory of ordered topological spaces. Moreover, a high level of modern knowledge of bitopological spaces theory has made it possible to introduce and study algebra of new type, the corresponding representation of which brings one to the special class of bitopological spaces. It is beyond any doubt that in the nearest future the areas of essential applications will be the theories of linear topological spaces and topological groups, algebraic and differential topologies, the homotopy theory, not to mention other fundamental areas of modern mathematics such as geometry, mathematical logic, the probability theory and many other areas, including those of applied nature. Key Features:- First monograph is 'Generalized Lattices'.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Surface activity is present in living systems; for example in body fluid or cell soup and molecules of surface-active nature are crucial to living matter and its organization. Surface Activity in Drug Action proposes 'a liquid membrane hypothesis of drug action' for surface-active drugs. Chapters 1-7 contains an account of the hypothesis and chapter 8 contains a general account of the application of surface activity in therapeutics. The methodology and presentation of the information makes Surface Activity in Drug Action valuable reading for students and researchers interested in surface activity.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The book is intended to provide in-depth reviews of the recent advances in major areas of metabolism in growing domestic animals. The study of metabolism represents a nexus of biological phenomenon that integrates the impact of nutrition, physiology, endocrinology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology in an organism. The development of new methodological techniques and experimental approaches have provide scientists with a greater understanding of how key nutrients or substrates are metabolized at the cellular, organ, and whole animal level. This book presents contributions from leading scientists in nutrition and physiology that highlight important new developments in interorgan and tissue-specific metabolism of protein and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, and carbohydrates in monogastric and runinant species. Authors will describe the impact of specific biochemical pathways and expression of critical enzymes, routes of nutrient or substrate input, and anatomical or structural influences on the rates of metabolism in a given tissue or cell type. Major substrates/ fuels for oxidative metabolism, key signaling pathways, and intracellular molecules that regulate the major metabolic processes will be described. Also included is how the metabolism of growing animals is influenced by ontogeny, stage of differentiation, and major changes in diet, or the environment. The concepts and specific findings in each area are discussed in the context of their impact on the nutrient requirements, growth, environmental impact, healt and well-being of animals. The book will be a useful reference for research scientists, teachers and students interested in and advanced understanding of metabolism in growing animals.- The book is written by leading experts and highlights some of the most recent advances in the field of metabolism.- It is a useful reference for researchers and advanced level graduate students in nutrition, physiology and animal science.- Presents recent advances in the field of metabolism. …
