Softcover. Condizione: Fine. Leichte Gebrauchsspuren. The holy city to three religions, Jerusalem has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands of years. It has been razed and rebuilt repeatedly, each time by a different culture with different ideas about what a city should be. As a result, the city of Jerusalem is a glorious - and gloriously confusing - mosaic of religious shrines, historic sites, tourism facilities, and cultural monuments. This handbook and guide provide the background information needed - from history and geography to where to eat and shop - to understand this 3,000-year-old city and to make the most of a visit to it. The guide provides an in depth introduction for geography, history, touring routes, historic sites, pilgrimage sites, museums, cultural attractions, shopping, dining, accommodations, the Old City, the German Colony, the Russian Compound, Rehavia, Yemin Moshe, Nahlaot, Mea Shearim, East Jerusalem, Ein Karem, the Mount of Olives, the National Center, Western Neighborhoods.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. In Hebrew. 302 pages. 245 x 172 mm. Elias Auerbach (the brother of Israel Auerbach (the husband of Bertha Datnowsky) was born in 1882 in Ritschenwalde, in the former Prussian province of Posen (today Ryczywol in Poland) and in 1890 his family moved to Berlin, where he attended school and studied medicine (1905, with final thesis). He was a physician and a Bible scholar and author. He was active in the Zionist movement, was a member of the Jüdische Humanitätsgesellschaft, of the Bar Kochba Athletic Association. He participated in the Zionist congresses of 1903, 1905 and 1907. He immigrated to Eretz Israel, then part of the Ottoman Empire, in late 1909 and he founded the first modern hospital in Haifa. There his name was Hebraicized to "Or" (his eldest son was named Daniel Or). He claimed to have been the first German Zionist to settle in the land of Israel out of personal motivation (two men had gone to Palestine because of their work in administrative posts, one for the World Zionist Organization, and the other for the Jewish Colonization Association) See Zionism in Germany 1897-1933, by Stephen Poppel). Elias Auerbach was one of the founders of a Jewish Athletic Association in Palestine. In 1914, during WWI, he returned to Germany with his family to serve as a military doctor. According to Amos Elon ("The Pity of it All"), Elias Auerbach decided to return to Germany to "do his duty" in the German army medical corps at the outbreak of WW1. He wrote in the Jüdische Rundschau: "We came back joyfully. It was not only our duty, it was mostly love for the country of our birth." But according to his grand-nephew Dr. Gilad Rosenberg, this quote is actually misleading, since in his journal Auerbach wrote that he didn't enlist but was drafted into the German army, like all German citizens from Palestine - Christians (Templars) and Jews. In October 1919 his wife Rachel died in Wronke (now Wronki in Poland) of the Spanish flu, and in 1920 he and his two children returned to Haifa, where he founded the first Jewish hospital in 1925. Between 1930 and 1933, Auerbach was again in Berlin because of an illness of his second wife. During this time he taught Bible studies at the College of Jewish Studies. Auerbach published numerous books and essays on Jewish culture and history. He is known especially for his contributions to Jewish biblical scholarship. His two-volume magnum opus "Wilderness and Promised Land" appeared in 1936. From 1950 he lectured on biblical subjects and the history of Israel at various European universities. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, a volume of essays was published in his honor by the Hevrah le-Heker ha-Mikra be-Yisrael, "Sefer Auerbach", ed. by A. Biram (1955). In 1969, "Pionier der Verwirklichung", the first part of his autobiography covering his life up to 1918, was published. He died two years later, in 1971 in Israel.…

Israel Aharoni 1882 - 1946) was a zoologist in Ottoman and British Mandatory Palestine widely known as the "first Hebrew zoologist." Aharoni is best known for collecting a litter of Syrian hamsters on an expedition to Aleppo, Syria. The hamsters were bred as laboratory animals in Jerusalem, but some escaped through a hole in the floor. The majority of hamsters in Israel today are thus said to be descended from this one litter. Israel Aharoni was born in Vidzy, Kovno Governorate, Russian Empire (in present-day Belarus). His father, Avraham Yossef Aharonovich, was the Rosh yeshiva of Vidzy and died before his son Israel was born. Israel lost his mother as well when he was two years old. Being an orphan, he lived with his grandmother and studied at a Cheder and later on at the Telshe yeshiva. At the age of 13, Israel ran away from his home to Prague, where he attended school and later on continued to learn zoology at Charles University. He immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1901, which was then under Turkish rule. His early zoological expeditions took place under the protection of the local ruler, for whom he obtained butterfly specimens. Many of his collected specimens can still be viewed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Aharoni discovered 30 previously unknown species of animals, insects and birds, and is credited with giving them Hebrew names. In 1930, Aharoni set off to look for Syrian hamsters at the request of his colleague Saul Adler, a parasitologist who was looking for an easily breedable alternative to the Chinese hamster for research on the disease Leishmaniasis. Syrian hamsters had been discovered and named by George Robert Waterhouse in 1839 but had not been sighted since. Together with a Syrian guide named Georgius Khalil Tah'an, Aharoni managed to discover a nest containing a female and eleven young in the Aleppo region. However, cannibalism of one of the litter by the mother, and the subsequent death of the mother, meant that Aharoni had to hand-rear the pups during the journey back. The four that made it were bred successfully and used extensively in laboratories, before being introduced to the pet market in the 1940s. …

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. (6), 192 pages. 23 x 160 cm. Ben-Zion Dinaburg (later Dinur) (January 1884 Khorol in the Russian Empire (now Poltava Oblast, Ukraine - 8 July 1973 Israel) was a Zionist activist, educator, historian and Israeli politician. He received his education in Lithuanian yeshivot. He studied under Shimon Shkop in the Telz Yeshiva, and became interested in the Haskalah through Rosh Yeshiva Eliezer Gordon's polemics. In 1898 he moved to the Slabodka yeshiva and in 1900 he traveled to Vilnius and was certified a Rabbi. He then went to Lyubavichi to witness the Chabad-Lubavitch branch of Hasidic Judaism. Between 1902 and 1911 he was engaged in Zionist activism and teaching, which at one point resulted in a brief arrest. In 1910 he married Bilhah Feingold, a teacher who had worked with him in a girls' trade school in Poltava. In 1911, he left his wife and son for two years to attend Berlin University, where he studied under Michael Rostovtzeff and Eugen Täubler. He then spent two more years at the University of Bern, where he began his dissertation under Rostovzev, on the Jews in the Land of Israel under the Roman Empire. The break of World War I forced him to move to the University of Petrograd. However, due to the October Revolution, he did not receive his PhD. He was a lecturer at the University of Odessa from 1920 to 1921. In 1921, he immigrated to Eretz Israel and from 1923 to 1948 served as a teacher and later as head of the Jewish Teachers' Training College, Jerusalem. In 1936, he was appointed lecturer in modern Jewish history at the Hebrew University and became professor in 1948 and professor emeritus in 1952. As a historian he described Zionism in the diaspora as "a huge river into which flowed all the smaller streams and tributaries of the Jewish struggle down the ages", and tracing its origins to 1700, when history records a first wave of Polish Jews immigrating to Jerusalem. He believed "messianic ferment" played a crucial role in Jewish history, and introduced the idea of mered hagalut ("Revolt of the Diaspora"). He was elected to the first Knesset on the Mapai list and served as Minister of Education and Culture in the third to sixth governments (1951 to 1955). From 1953 to 1959 he was president of Yad Vashem. Dinur was twice a recipient of the Israel Prize, which was established at his initiative when he was Minister of Education. He was a recipient of the Yakir Yerushalayim (Worthy Citizen of Jerusalem) award in 1967, the year of the award's inauguration.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. 22 x 14 cm. (6), xxxi, 201 pages. Micha Josef Berdyczewski, or Mikhah Yosef Bin-Gorion (August 7, 1865 - November 18, 1921) (also written Berdichevsky), was born in Little Russia. He was a writer of Hebrew, a journalist, and a scholar. He appealed to Jews to move away from religion, tradition and history, but is also known for his work with pre-modern Jewish myths and legends. He wrote in Hebrew, Yiddish and German. He was born in the town Medzhybizh in western Ukraine, to a family of Hasidic Rabbis. His father was the town Rabbi. In his youth he began to read works from the Jewish Enlightenment, and their influence is noticeable in his works. Berdyczewski was forced to divorce his first wife following her family's objection to his involvement with secular literature. He then moved to the Volozhin Yeshiva, but there too his pursuit of unconventional literature stirred anger and objection. One of his earliest publications was about this period of his life, an article titled "Hetzitz V'nifga" (= peeked and was hurt), meaning "gone to heresy", published in 1888 in the newspaper Ha-Melitz. Most of his works from this period were polemic, and his emotional style became his trademark throughout his writing career. In 1890 he went to Germany and Switzerland, studied at the universities of Berlin, Breslau and Bern, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree. In this period Berdyczewski studied the works of Nietzsche and Hegel, and was deeply influenced by them. In the ten years until his return to Ukraine he published many articles and stories in Hebrew journals. Up to 1900, the year in which he married Rahel Ramberg, he had published ten books. Upon his return to Ukraine, Berdyczewski encountered the harsh reality of the Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement, and subsequently the subject of many of his stories is the deterioration of the traditional way of life. After a short stay in Warsaw, he returned to Germany in 1911, where he lived until his death in 1921. He is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Weißensee, Berlin. Berdyczewski adopted the surname Bin-Gorion, first used to sign a collection of his works that he published in Berlin in 1914. The name Bin-Gorion is also inscribed on his tombstone. His last years were spent in intensive writing and research, collecting Jewish legends and folktales and publishing in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German. After his death, his wife and their son Emanuel Bin-Gorion translated some of his works into German, among them Die Sagen der Juden ("The Legends of the Jews", 1935) and Der Born Judas ("The Well of Judah"), published in six volumes. Berdyczewski's popularity among the Jews of his age is attributed to his success in expressing their ambivalent attitude towards the traditional Jewish world, and to the secular European culture.…
