Paperback. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows just a hint of wear to the extremities; very mild rubbing to the wrapper covers; a crease top to bottom at the backstrip (does not result in a broken binding); a former owner's rather lengthy gift inscription at the front endpaper; the the pages are bright and crisp; the binding leans somewhat, but remains secure. Nearly new: structurally sound and tightly bound, would make a very handsome reading copy. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (6.85 x 4.35 x 0.55 inches). 166 pages. Coleccion Austral, Number 99. Language: Spanish. Weight: 6 ounces. First Edition [1939]; Twentieth Edition [1984]; first published in 1914. Mass Market Paperback. Contains twenty-three short essays. Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864 1936) was a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, and Greek professor and later rector at the University of Salamanca. Miguel de Unamuno was born in Bilbao, a port city of Basque Country, the son of Félix de Unamuno and Salomé Jugo. As a young man, he was interested in the Basque language and competed for a teaching position in the Instituto de Bilbao against Sabino Arana. The contest was finally won by the Basque scholar Resurrección María de Azkue. Unamuno worked in all major genres: the essay, the novel, poetry, and theater, and, as a modernist, contributed greatly to dissolving the boundaries between genres. There is some debate as to whether Unamuno was in fact a member of the Generation of '98, an ex post facto literary group of Spanish intellectuals and philosophers that was the creation of José Martínez Ruiz a group that includes Antonio Machado, Azorín, Pío Baroja, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ramiro de Maeztu, and Ángel Ganivet, among others.Unamuno would have preferred to be a philosophy professor, but was unable to get an academic appointment; philosophy was in Spain somewhat politicized. Instead he became a Greek professor. His major philosophical essay was The Tragic Sense of Life (1913), and his most famous novel was Abel Sánchez: The History of a Passion (1917), a modern exploration of the Cain and Abel story. First Edition [1939]; Twentieth Edition [1984]; later impression thus [1914].

Edited by Jose Antonio Perez Bowie. Language: Spanish. Weight: 8.9 ounces. Mass Market Paperback. Pío Baroja y Nessi (1872 1956) was a Spanish writer, one of the key novelists of the Generation of '98. In keeping with the dominant Spanish literary tradition, Baroja often wrote in a pessimistic, picaresque style. His deft portrayal of the characters and settings brought the Basque region to life much as Benito Pérez Galdós' works offered an insight into Madrid. Baroja's works were often lively but could be lacking in plot. They are written in an abrupt, vivid, yet impersonal style. Ernest Hemingway was greatly influenced by Baroja and told him when he visited him in October 1956, "Allow me to pay this small tribute to you who taught so much to those of us who wanted to be writers when we were young. I deplore the fact that you have not yet received a Nobel Prize, especially when it was given to so many who deserved it less, like me, who am only an adventurer."[ First Edition Thus (1990), unstated. First published in 1943.

Far from the romantic exaltations, it is the nudity, the restraint, the delicate intimacy, the balance between passion and intelligence, the predominance of suggestions, the recreation of daily experiences after a period of sedimentation, that make Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer ( 1836-1870) the most timeless poet of the entire Spanish 19th century and explain his decisive influence on numerous later poets.
