On October 5 1929, Upfield, Ritchie and Snowy Rowles, the northern boundary rider for the fence, all met at the Camel Station and discussed the murder method in the forthcoming book. This is Upfields own account of the Snowy Rowles murder case, augmented by police photographs and Upfields evidence, colourised for the first time. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1818, Thomas Wells wrote the first work of general literature published in Australia, describing the life of British highwayman, convicted to Van Diemens Land; the bushranger Michael Howe (1787-1818). Howe and his gang plundered the New Norfolk and other early settled areas in Tasmania. Also included in this volume - Van Diemen's Land Warriors, the first verse published in Tasmania in 1827. This satire on the military forces for their failure to put an end to bushranging was suppressed by Government Order, and all copies burnt, except one. Both volumes were originally republished by historian, George Mackaness, who also introduces and contributes an essay on Mathew Brady (1799 1826) not the first but definitely the last of the Tasmanian bushrangers. Best known for his 'Australian Slanguage', Hornadge this time writes of all those from settlement to the present who have sought their own idea of Paradise, either on our shores or on such famous expeditions as those to Paraguay. This is a bible of beachcombers and Paradise hunters, from Mary Gilmore to Cedar Bay Bill. This book covers over three centuries of Australian history from the earliest explorations to modern times. Bill Hornadge has drawn together a resource of government, group settlement and individual dreams. Terra Australia, Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, Van Demon's Land. Hornadge outlines all the key 19th Century experiments in communes and collectives, including Utopian colonies in Paraguay, New Italy in New South Wales, the Queensland Co-operatives and the Village Settlements of South Australia. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Arthur Roberts was a schoolmaster in country NSW (1861 to 1894) and it was education and the changing educational system that shaped his life. Born in the hop-growing region of Kent, England, his life and prospects were transformed by a wave of educational reform that carried him far from family, class and country. Roberts found himself on the frontier of attempts to establish a national school system in Australia. With a swiftly growing family - one with a severe disability - he was moved from one struggling district to another, fighting insolvency, ignorance, natural disaster and bitter sectarian divides. His letters requesting schoolroom furniture, upgrades to buildings and teaching assistants give some insight into his plight. Photographs and family folklore reveal a taciturn, deeply flawed man while the evidence of writings (as Scone correspondent for The Maitland Mercury) suggests a fiery intelligence and defiant pride. This is amplified by a portrait of Roberts in Havelock Ellis' autobiographical novel, Kanga Creek. The schoolmaster, Mr Williams, is portrayed as an educated and passionate agnostic who uses the pen name Anti-Humbug when writing letters to The Stockwhip, a journal possibly modeled on publications like The Bulletin. This narrative presents these contradictions and hopefully gives the reader some sense of this teacher's journey. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This is a remarkable book as it is a translation of an account written by the author Ernst Raubitschek soon after World War Two. As the title suggests it tells of his journey to Dachau concentration camp, his stay there and subsequent journey to Buchenwald concentration camp after Kristallnacht and before the outbreak of war. It has been translated by Ernst's daughter Renate Yates. She has included a preface telling of a happy and full life prior to these traumatic events and a postscript describing their emigration to Australia and the new life this family made for themselves in a new country. The detailed descriptions written in this account stand as testament to the abhorrent behaviour, cruelty and antisemitism to which Austrian Jews were subjected even before the start of the war. Lasseter claims in his diary that he had rediscovered the reef and had pegged and claimed the area (but gave no date or no location); however, suffering from starvation and sandy blight he recorded his thoughts, what good a reef worth millions? I would give it all for a loaf of bread. The diary was found after his body was discovered, and further expeditions have failed to solve the mystery. This is the first time the diary has been fully transcribed and contains all of Lasster's own mud-maps. The diary was purchased by Ion Idriess from Lasseter's widow in 1931, and from it he wrote the best-seller Lasseter's Last Ride. Here is the transcription of the diary with its original mud-maps and drawings. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Originally published in 1894 and one of the rarest of all Kellyana, this has been out of print in any form for over 100 years. Fully illustrated with contemporary engravings and photographs, for the 140th anniversary of the events at Stringybark Creek. When Kennedy and Scanlon were gone the other two set about camp work. McIntyre, who had the cooking for the day in hand, had disembarrassed himself of his weapons, so when suddenly confronted by the Kelly Gang, and ordered to throw up his hands, he had no resource but obey. Lonergan, who was armed, instead of doing so, started running with apparently the idea of getting some vantage ground from which to shot. He had only covered four or five yards when he was shot down, and expired a few minutes afterwards. That he meant to show fight was evident by the attempt to get out his revolver when running. According to the evidence given at the trial, the gang manifested some regret at having to shoot down so plucky a fellow. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The World Is Round is a lively novel, which tells the story of Jean a lovely and likeable Sydney woman with literary aspirations. First published in London in 1896 before My Brilliant Career the vitality and immediacy of this Australian classic are as startling and attractive as the charm and exuberance of the heroines personality. This tragicomic novel is witty, vibrant and ultimately a powerful drama of a womans path to self-knowledge. Introduced by Nancy Phelan. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. From life in small New South Wales country towns to the glitter of Sydney, this memoir explores life in a changing Australia, from age 7 to 17. Especially written and recorded for ABC Radio, this book evokes an innocent Australia through a quietly comic delivery, where we witness again holidays in quiet seaside villages, the days when newspapers were king, Decimal Currency Day was a big thing and Beatles haircuts were all the rage. When teenagers were inspired by pop music to a fresh idealism, protest and groovy gear. When man walked on the moon. A journey through the drama and excitement of an Australia now known only by memory. This is the first publication of Growing Up in the Sixties as broadcast on ABCs Nitelife several times, and on many ABC regional stations including Broken Hill, Wagga Wagga, Canberra, Upper Hunter, Tamworth and Darwin. "If you remember UV lights, if you loved Easy Rider, if you still know the words to Norwegian Wood and once had a poster of Che Guevara on your bedroom wall - in other words, if you grew up in Australia in the 1960s - you will get a lot of fun with Tom Thompson's book. It is funny and astute and wonderfully nostalgic." - Jane Cadzow, The Australia Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Thompson's city is Sydney, and perhaps the most impressive feature of his writing is the way the physical reality of the city is caught throughout the prose, and the power with which Thompson draws the skin of human relationships over this brutal and jagged landscape that cuts and moulds them. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Glugs of Gosh is a book of satirical verse written by Australian author C. J. Dennis, published by Angus & Robertson in 1917. The book's 13 poems are vignettes of life in a fictional kingdom called Gosh, inhabited by an arboreal race (that is to say, climbers) known as Glugs. Dennis describes the Glugs as a "stupid race of docile folk". The illustrations, by Dennis's regular collaborator Hal Gye, depict the Glugs as short humanoids with large heads. Written in the style of children's nonsense poetry, the work attacks free trade, along with what Dennis saw as Australia's social conformity, intellectual cowardice and rampant bureaucracy. With an introduction by John Derum. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In the year 1890, Stevenson was living at Apia in Samoa, where he had purchased some three hundred acres in the bush, two miles behind and six hundred feet above the level of the town, and on which he proposed to build a cottage for himself and his family. Why did he almost immediately leave Samoa to pay his first visit to Sydney? The answer, as he tells us himself, was not '' for the purpose of spying out the land,'' but first because he was seeking health, and secondly because he wished to consult an architect regarding the plans for his new home to be built at Vailima. So begins historian George Mackaness in this classic monograph detailing the author's four visits to Sydney between 1890 and 1894, touching his writings here of Father Damien and The Wrecker. Introduced by Robert Darroch Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
