Orphaned at age two, young Aaron Burr was raised by an uncle, was graduated from Princeton at seventeen, and interrupted his law studies for a distinguished military career during the Revolution, attaining the rank of colonel. After the war, he established a successful law practice in Manhattan, where his home, "Richmond Hill," run by the two Theodosias ~his wife and daughter~ became a center of culture and elegance. He entered politics in the New York state assembly, became state attorney general in 1789, U.S. senator in 1791, and Vice President in 1801. His preeminent social advantages, his energy and abilities raise the question: why did the career that rapidly lifted him to "within a hair's breadth of the Presidency of the United States" later plunge him into a treason trial, exile, and disgrace? ~ Much of the disrepute surrounding the name of Aaron Burr derives from the sensational "conspiracy"~for which he was tried and acquitted ~ allegedly to dismember the American union by breaking away lands in the West. Milton Lomask begins by tracing the origins and progress of this "conspiracy," which went forward after Burr's term as Vice President ended in March 1805. A key figure in these plans was the double~dealing Gen. James Wilkinson, secretly in the pay of Spain as "Agent No. 13," whom Jeffer son trusted and who testified against Burr at his trial. Lomask highlights the legal battles at Richmond, Virginia, where Burr was charged with treason and misdemeanor. Startling new material is brought to light.…

Weight: 18 ounces. First Edition Thus (1983); Second Printing (1983). Trade Paperback. Elias Canetti (1905 1994) was a German-language writer, born in Ruse, Bulgaria to a Sephardic family. They moved to Manchester, England, but his father died in 1912, and his mother took her three sons back to continental Europe. They settled in Vienna. Canetti moved to England in 1938 after the Anschluss to escape Nazi persecution. He became a British citizen in 1952. He is known as a modernist novelist, playwright, memoirist, and nonfiction writer. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981, "for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power". He is noted for his nonfiction book Crowds and Power, among other works. In this autobiographical work, Canetti describes his admiration for his first great mentor, the Viennese writer Karl Kraus, and his passion for his first wife, Veza. Canetti seamlessly incorporates a profoundly perceptive portrait of Vienna and Berlin in the 1920s. Here are the voices of Brecht, Isaac Babel, George Grosz, and many others. This is autobiography redefining itself and the book is, indeed, in a class by itself. First Edition Thus (1983); Second Printing (1983). …

A charming 48 pp fable that evokes a life lesson we would all do well to learn: living and loving are time well spent. Once, there was a boy named Charlie. He had a pretty nice life . . . but it wasn't perfect. So one day he packed up all his time- all his round, squishy years and square, mushy months, down to every itsy - bitsy second- in his suitcase and locked it up safe, said goodbye to his parents, and set off to find something better to spend his time on. Charlie traveled all over the world in search of the perfect thing to make him happy, but that turned out to be much harder to find than he thought. In the meantime, his itsy-bitsy seconds and silky, smooth hours and raggedy days ticked away and vanished, and soon they added up to weeks and months and years- so that once Charlie stopped his traveling and realized what he really needed out of life, it was almost too late. Almost. Every so often, a book comes along that seems to capture an important truth for a particular time and generation. This is one of those books: a unique story about the relentless search for perfect happiness that preoccupies so many of us.…

Softcover. Condizione: Fine. Leichte Gebrauchsspuren; Leichte Verformung / umgeknickte Seiten. From a youthful infatuation with a cabinet maker in a small Italian fishing village, to a passionate yet sporadic affair with a woman in New York, to an obsession with a man he meets at a tennis court, Enigma Variations charts one man's path through the great loves of his life. Paul's intense desires, losses and longings draw him closer, not to a defined orientation, but to an understanding that 'heartache, like love, like low-grade fevers, like the longing to reach out and touch a hand across the table, is easy enough to live down'.André Aciman casts a shimmering light over each facet of desire, to probe how we ache, want and waver, and ultimately how we sometimes falter and let go of the very ones we want the most. We may not know what we want. We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others. But sooner or later we discover who we've always known we were. …
