Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The theatre is the central theme of this fourth volume in our series titled 'Art Brut - The Collection', published to coincide with the fourth Art Brut Biennale. After exploring architecture, vehicles, and bodies, attention turns to the theatre, a theme that is developed in its various aspects. The simplest example is the depiction of theatrical architecture, as in the work of Eugen Gabritschevsky or Victorien Sardou. Other artists create works that are intimately connected to the world of theatre, however without necessarily being a part of it. For example, for Giovanni Battista Podesta or Vahan Poladian, a public stage is a place where they put on a 'performance' that responds to a society that consigns them to its margins. Their intrinsically ephemeral approach uses clothing or accessories as a means of communication and to have their voices or protestations heard. Other artists conceive whole cosmogonies that take the form of a gigantic staging of a fanciful, phantasmagoric world, as in the case of Aloise Corbaz, whose work is to be viewed as a 'Theatre of the universe', or in that of Marguerite Burnat-Provins, with her graphic work titled 'Ma Ville'. The book includes over 100 illustrations, many of which are published for the first time, carefully chosen to enable the reader to explore the theme of the theatre in Outsider Art, or Art Brut. Also available in the series: Vehicles ISBN 9788874396580 Architecture ISBN 9788874397105 Body ISBN 9788874397884 130 colour images The theatre is the central theme of this fourth volume in our series titled 'Art Brut - The Collection', published to coincide with the fourth Art Brut Biennale. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The volume accompanying an exhibition at Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne, from 8 December 2023 to 28 April 2024 invites us to reflect on the role a face can play in mediating communication through the gaze. We are all aware of how powerful it can be when eyes meet, as well as their crucial role in giving dignity to people through caring. But the face can also be considered from another, almost conflicting, point of view, as a visible surface masking the invisible aspects of the human being: it can either reveal or conceal feelings and emotions, thoughts and concerns The subject of faces deserves to be explored here in all its anthropological depth. In Art Brut, its production marked as it is by a powerful creative urge, this exploration takes on a singular dimension, with the presentation of works whose figurative content facilitates the encounter with this inalienable aspect of humanity, which becomes somehow inevitable, regardless of the marginality of the social and cultural acknowledgement of the artists. These faces, whether withdrawn or seeking, with their attentive, questioning, communicative, absent, or empty expressions, reflect a manner of relating to the world that interrogates, through a mise en abyme of sorts, our very encounter with humanity. AUTHORS: Pascal Roman is a professor of Clinical Psychology, Psychopathology, and Psychoanalysis. Marco Decimo is a professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Paris Ouest-Nanterre and director of the College de Pataphysique. SELLING POINTS: . The theme of the sixth Biennale de l'Art Brut (20232024) is faces, a distinctive feature of human beings, which, thanks to their expression, can encompass the complexity of the entire person-their body and their spirit . Published to accompany an exhibition at Collection de l'Art Brut, Lausanne, from 8 December 2023 to 28 April 2024 125 colour illustrations The volume invites us to reflect on the role a face can play in mediating communication through the gaze. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Globalisation has forced us to stop thinking that art only exists in the West. The very notion of art was invented by the West and refers to the learned version of its material culture. It was then projected onto other civilisations, particularly Asian ones, and finally onto the preliterate societies of Africa and Oceania. Whether or not these cultures possess the concept of art is of little importance, because when they honour their gods, they inevitably address what they consider to be the acme of beauty. For a long time, this openness to other aesthetics was based on the arts of the past, until it was finally accepted that there were living creators in these distant lands, and that today's means of communication have brought them closer to us. These others who appeared in the 1980s are by no means a homogenous group. Without stretching this analysis too far, they can be regarded as falling into two categories: those who have opted for modernity and submit to the demands of the market and Western based institutions, and those who concentrate on giving visual expression to their communities and beliefs, ignoring the demands of the art market. Australian Aboriginal art represents an intermediate situation, since alongside art of a sacred nature, there are works deliberately produced for sale, initially encouraged by missionaries. Nothing too beautiful for the gods aims to show the variety of works connected with the spiritual impulse, from those used in religious rites to contemporary artworks that refer to them. These hybrid works are often the result of accommodations with modernity. The exhibition and accompanying book bring together altars from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, works by artists invested with religious responsibilities (Didi, Shiraga), works by religious artists (Ramoun) and others by artists who refer explicitly to religions and spirituality (Sooja Kim, El Anatsui, Vasquez de la Horra, Bedia, Boltanski, Viola). Text in English and French. AUTHOR: Jean Hubert Martin is an art historian of international standing. He is known especially for his remarkable contribution to the Francis Picabia exhibition held in the Grand Palais in 1976, as well as for the innovations he introduced into the field of museology in the 1980s. JeanHubert Martin also played a key role in organising the Magiciens de la Terre exhibition (1989) at the Centre GeorgesPompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette, reflecting the growing interest in primitive art. SELLING POINTS: . Explores the concept of art and the sacred across different cultures . Nothing too beautiful for the gods brings together religious artifacts, contemporary art that references religion, and works by artists who are invested in religious traditions . Artists featured in the book include Didi, Shiraga, Ramoun, Sooja Kim, El Anatsui, Vasquez de la Horra, Bedia, Boltanski, and Viola 90 colour illustrations This book argues that globalisation challenges the Western idea of art and explores how different cultures express spirituality through art. Text in English and French. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Maria Lai (Ulassai, September 27, 1919 - Cardedu, April 16, 2013) is without doubt one of the leading figures in the history of contemporary Italian art. Not only on account of the content of her works, but also thanks to the diversity of her artistic approach, ranging as it does across many media - public art, embroidery, weaving, sculpture, drawing, and writing: all are grist for her poetics. The book is published to coincide with the exhibition at the MAXXI Museum in Rome, which is presenting to the general public over one hundred works by the Sardinian artist, from the early 1960s to her very last works, and explores the various themes dear to the artist with the contributions of experts in their fields: the locations, the creation, and publication of art books, her public art events and her relationship with the written word and her own writing. Her entire oeuvre is distinguished by its powerful visual impact, revealing a 'way of doing art' that is nothing other than an instrument of thought. The book's structure reflects the exhibition's own sections, arranged by theme, whose titles are paradigmatic of Lai's oeuvre as a whole: Essere e tessere. Cucire e ricucire; L'arte e il gioco degli adulti. Giocare e raccontare; Disseminare e condividere; Il viaggiatore astrale. Immaginare l'altrove; L'arte ci prende per mano. Incontrare e partecipare. Text in English and Italian. Published to accompany an exhibition at the MAXXI Museum, Rome, 19 June 2019-12 January 2020. AUTHORS: Maria Alicata is an art historian and exhibition organiser. She was head of the Art, Architecture, and Town Planning section at the Olivetti Foundation. Antonella Anedda trained as an art historian and has worked in the field of literature and translation. She writes essays and poetry. Franco Farinelli is a geographer and has taught in some of the world's most illustrious universities: Geneva University; UCLA - University of California, Los Angeles; UCB - University of California, Berkeley; and at the Sorbonne in Paris. He is Professor of Geography at Bologna University and has been president of Associazione Geografi italiani (Society of Italian Geographers). Davide Mariani is an art historian and director of the Stazione dell'Arte in Ulassai (Nuoro). Elena Pontiggia is an art historian with a particular interest in Italian and international art between the wars. She teaches at the Accademia di Brera and at the Politecnico di Milano. 80 colour images The book's structure reflects the exhibition's own sections, arranged by theme, whose titles are paradigmatic of Lai's oeuvre as a whole. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This volume is a continuation of the first instalment of the editorial project Canova | In Four Tempos, ISBN 9788874399215, born in co-edition with the Pallavicino Foundation in Genoa with the goal of collecting in a refined publication the photographic research of Luigi Spina focused on the plaster models by Antonio Canova almost entirely preserved at the plaster cast gallery in Possagno. This project accompanying the four-year Canovian celebrations (20192022) is structured in four publications, each focused on a specific nucleus of plaster models. Its aim is to give new dignity to Antonio Canova's creative process while highlighting the fundamental role of the bronze nails (reperes) that made the metamorphoses from plaster model to marble sculpture possible. The first volume is devoted to the dialogue of Myth and Faith, illustrated by Spina with photographs of Cupid and Psyche, Paolina Borghese Bonaparte, Venus and Mars, the Lying Magdalen, Peace, and the Lamentation of Christ, while this, the second volume, revolves mainly around Myth. The sculptures on which the visual narrative focuses are: Dancer with Finger on Chin, Dedalus and Icarus, Theseus Defeats the Centaur, Naiad, Pius VII Praying, Venus and Adonis, and Sleeping Nymph. AUTHORS: Prince Domenico Antonio Pallavicino (Stresa 1944) is the scion of one of the oldest and most prominent families in Genoa. After a classical education, he chose to study foreign languages and later joined his father in the management of the family's assets. From 1980 he was Consul General of the Principality of Monaco in Genoa and Liguria. In 2018, his cosmopolitan vision and refined culture, as well as his love for art and history, led him to establish the Fondazione Pallavicino ETS, of which he is president. Luigi Spina is a photographer. His work focuses on amphitheatres and the civic dimension of the sacred, the links between art and faith, the search for ancient cultural roots, and the physical impact of classical sculpture. His published works include L'Ora incerta (2014), The Buchner Boxes (2014), Hemba (2017), and Mythical Diary (2017). Spina has collaborated with Valeria Sampaolo and 5 Continents Editions to create the series Oggetti rari e preziosi al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, whose titles to date embrace Memorie del Vaso blu (2016), Amazzonomachia (2017), Centauri (2017), Sette sapienti (2018), and Zefiro e Clori (2018). He has also published The Dancers at the Villa of the Papyri for 5 Continents Editions's Tailormade series. Vittorio Sgarbi (Ferrara 1952) is an art critic, the curator of exhibitions with international relevance, a refined collector, and the author of several popular volumes on the importance of culture and art. Among his most recent publications, Dall'ombra alla luce. Da Caravaggio a Tiepolo; Dal mito alla favola bella. Da Canaletto a Boldini (La Nave di Teseo, 2019), instalments of the "Treasures of Italy" series. He is also a politician and an independent free thinker. 61 b/w illustrations This volume is a continuation of the first instalment of the editorial project Canova | In Four Tempos. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The art of Jackie Giles is a bridge between Aboriginal cosmology and the modern world. His paintings reveal the profundity of Dreamtime and the wisdom possessed by traditional healers. For a large part of his life, Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri (ca 1935-2010) led a nomadic existence, travelling across large tracts of and later spending time in small communities in Australia's vast Western Desert region. Jackie Giles was renowned as a man of great erudition and a powerful healer, Maparnjarra in his native Ngaanyatjarra language. The powers of these traditional healers include the gift of seeing into the bodies and even the spirits of others. In the 1990s, Jackie Giles started painting with acrylic on canvas. Mr Giles, as he was often called, combined an intimate knowledge of his land with his own oneiric visions to build what became a significant personal oeuvre. These paintings celebrate the Tjukurpa (Dreaming), which pervades the land and is a cornerstone of its identity. Built around labyrinthine patterns and monumental shapes, these dynamic, rhythmical compositions allude to the esoteric, sacred subject matter of the Dreaming. The intense, striking works that make up this awe-inspiring oeuvre manage to link two dimensions: Ngaanyatjarra cosmology and the rapidly changing modern world. Text in English and French. AUTHORS: Hetti Kemarre Perkins, daughter of Aboriginal rights activist Charles Perkins, is an Arrernte and Kalkadoon art curator and writer. From 1989 until 2011 Perkins worked at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), including thirteen years as senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. She co-organised the Australian entry for the 1997 Venice Biennale. In 2010, she organised the project art + soul: a journey into the world of Aboriginal art, which incorporated a significant exhibition, an accompanying book and a three-part television documentary made by ABC Television. Hetti Kemarre Perkins has organised several major exhibitions and projects, as well as co-organising a major retrospective of Emily Kam Kngwarray's oeuvre held at the National Gallery of Australia in 2023/2024. Georges Petitjean is an art historian whose PhD thesis at La Trobe University in Melbourne examined the art of the Western Desert. He has lived and worked in Australia for many years and has closely followed the work of many artists in central Australia and in the Kimberley since 1992. He was curator of the Aboriginal Art Museum Utrecht (AAMU), Netherlands, from 2005 to 2017, when he was appointed curator of the Collection Berengere Primat. Georges Petitjean's main area of interest is the trajectory Australian Aboriginal art has followed from its origins to the world of international contemporary art. He has acted as a consultant or organiser for numerous Aboriginal art exhibitions in Europe and Australia, and continues to write about Aboriginal art and culture. Michael Stitfold was a field officer for Papunya Tula Artists in the Communities of Kintore and Kiwirrkurra between 2002 and 2004. In 2005 he was appointed manager of Kayili Artists, an art centre located in Patjarr, a small Aboriginal Community in a remote part of the Gibson Desert in Western Australia. While there, he worked with Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri and travelled with him to Sydney in 2009. From 2012 until 2020, he worked with Munupi Arts in the Tiwi Islands and was briefly involved with the Tennant Creek Brio (Nyinkka Nyunyu Arts and Cultural Centre). Through these experiences he gained extensive knowledge about managing art centres in remote Communities, acting as an intermediary between the artists and the broader art world. He has also acted as manager for Injalak Arts in northwest Arnhem Land. SELLING POINTS: . Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles (ca 1935-2010) began painting in acrylic on canvas in the 1990s Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Discover an example of striking and spiritual graphic art that takes its cue from messages from the hereafter to produce unique creations. Laure Pigeon (1882-1965) is one of the leading figures in Art Brut (Outsider Art), along with Aloise Corbaz and Adolf Woelfli. The Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne probably possesses her entire oeuvre, amounting to over 400 works, including writings, notebooks, small-scale drawings and an extensive series of large compositions in blue ink. These are all part of the corpus of works acquired by Jean Dubuffet, the historic collection around which the museum was founded. In 1978, the Collection de l'Art Brut held the first and only monographic exhibition dedicated to this artist. A new exhibition in 2025 has now been devoted to her exclusively. It offers a representative selection of her striking graphic work, spanning a period of 30 years. Like Madge Gill, Jeanne Tripier, Augustin Lesage and Raphael Lonne, Laure Pigeon too was a member of the spiritualist fraternity men and women who feel selected to receive messages from the hereafter and claim the deceased are responsible for their creations. The spiritualist's hand is therefore guided and merely executes what the spirits dictate. The catalogue, in French and English, includes essays by several authors and a large number of colour illustrations. AUTHORS: Anic Zanzi has been a curator at the Collection de l'Art Brut since 2003. An art historian with a degree in Public Relations, she is in charge of editing the various works published by the institution and organises exhibitions, such as People (2016), Henriette Zephir (2017), Ernst Kolb (2018), Carlo Zinelli, recto verso (2019) and Michel Nedjar (2023), as well as two Art Brut biennials, Vehicules (2013) and Croyances (2022). Flavie Beuvin is a visual artist with a degree in Art and Aesthetics. Her art and theoretical work focus on the echoes between the creating body and the body of the work. The concept of vegetality, which she developed as part of her academic research and published by Presses Universitaires du Septentrion as Vegetalite, Art Brut et feminins, lies at the heart of her aesthetics. She is also extremely keen on drawing, combining it with various other media, such as embroidery and collage. Vania Freitas holds a BA in Conservation-Restoration from the Haute Ecole Arc in Neuchatel. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in Museum Studies at the University of Neuchatel. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Paul Starosta is a French nature photographer, famous for finding and highlighting the artistic beauties of nature. The 200 superb photographs in this book illustrate the splendour and complexity of seeds, including the very smallest specimens. Drawing on the collections of Jean Laty and the La Voie des Fleurs society in Draveil (France), they showcase the infinite shapes, colours and stunning details to be found in objects often ignored: some seeds look like flowers, others stones or sculptures, while still others suggest jewels fashioned by some imaginary goldsmith. The almost magical beauty of these little masterpieces, which enclose the mystery of life in both the infinitely small and the infinitely large, is brought out by the play of light and shadow. These little wonders conjure up others and are reminiscent of works of art or architectural features. Human beings are themselves nature and have found inspiration in it to create their own bold and curious works. At the end of the volume, miniature photographs are accompanied by scientific information on the seeds, their life, characteristics and different families. AUTHOR: Paul Starosta is a biologist and photographer. Combining his twin passions of nature and photography, he has published over 40 award-winning books on plants and animals. He is the subject of issue 129 (2010) of Photo Poche, a series created by Robert Delpire and published by Actes Sud, which has become a yardstick in its field throughout the world. SELLING POINTS: . Although seeds are often overlooked, the book reveals their surprising resemblance to flowers, stones, sculptures, and even jewels . Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Molluscs are extraordinary builders; indeed, their architectural skills are almost unparalleled in the animal world. Who among us has failed to marvel at the wonderful structure of the smallest shell picked up on the beach? Some enthusiasts collect them throughout their lives attracted by their beauty if they are aesthetes, or sought out for scientific purposes, as in the case of Jacques Senders. In this book, Paul Starosta's spectacular photographs take the reader on a journey through this astounding collection, first started 50 years ago. These shells, marvels of nature as they are, naturally suggest exotic or futuristic architecture, ancient or Art Nouveau vases, or even precious stones or volcanic rocks, and reaffirm the importance of nature as a source of inspiration for artists and architects. By celebrating the extraordinary variety and architectural refinement of the shells in Jacques and Rita Senders's collection, the book reveals a world where nature far surpasses human imagination and invention. At the end of the volume, miniature photographs are accompanied by scientific information on shells, their life, characteristics and different families. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Probably no artist was more prolific among 18th-century topographers than Grimm in recording the landscapes and historic buildings of Great Britain, and none played a more important role. Born near Bern in Switzerland, Samuel Hieronymus Grimm studied under various teachers before deciding to move to London in 1768, where he remained for the rest of his life. A talented watercolour artist, he earned an impressive reputation among his clients as a quick, accurate painter. The most important of his patrons was Sir Richard Kaye, who retained Grimm's services for nearly two decades and during this period accumulated over 2,600 drawings and watercolours. Grimm was a tireless traveller, ranging far and wide over Britain and creating works of various kinds, from simple landscapes to highly detailed and now invaluable scenes of daily rural life. While in London, Grimm also revealed an unexpectedly sharp, witty side to his talent, publishing a series of political caricatures and drawings satirising the society of the time and its fashions. Some of Grimm's most conspicuous commissions came from the Society of Antiquaries, which was keen to build a visual record of historical monuments at risk of being destroyed. In spite of the considerable success he enjoyed during his lifetime, his reputation quickly faded thereafter and the exhibition held in the Kunstmuseum in Bern in 2014 was the first show devoted entirely to his work. The accompanying monograph by Dr. William Hauptman restores Grimm to his rightful place in the history of British painting. AUTHOR: William Hauptman is the author of several books on 18th- and 19th-century painting, the catalogue raisonne of the oeuvre of Charles Gleyre (1806-74), and other scholarly works. He has also organised around ten exhibitions. 75 colour images Accompanying the first exhibition devoted entirely to Grimm's work and held in the Kunstmuseum in Bern in 2014, this monograph restores Grimm to his rightful place in history of British painting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Venezuelan painter and sculptor Alejandro Otero (1921-1990) was one of the most significant artists in the history of abstraction. Between 1955 and 1960, he developed an extraordinary series of 75 paintings called Coloritmos (Colourhythms), one of his major contribu--tions to the field of painting. Painted with Duco, a shiny industrial lacquer applied with a spray gun or roller, the Colourhythms are large-scale compositional modules executed on rectangular support structures. In these works, Otero succeeded in emphasising rhythm and colour over form; as a consequence of optical intensity, chromatic vibration and the suggestion of rhythmic movement, the pictures seem to expand dynamically outward. This illuminating book, the first dedicated to Colourhythms, evaluates their place in Otero's practice and in the context of international geometric abstraction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Jivya Soma Mashe, a Warli artist, created unique, animist-inspired paintings. His work gained international acclaim, exhibited at prestigious venues like the Centre Pompidou. This is the first book to be entirely dedicated to the artwork of Jivya Soma Mashe. Through the quality of his work, Jivya Soma Mashe stands comparison with other outstanding enigmatic artists, such as Bill Traylor or Frederic Bruly Bouabre, who broaden our understanding of the diversity of forms and cultures. Jivya Soma Mashe (19342018) is a legendary figure among his people, the Warli, a tribe of around 300,000 inhabiting an area 150 km north of Mumbai (Maharashtra, India). Its members are animists and speak a language that has never developed a written form. To the best of human memory, it is Warli women who have always painted ritual and ephemeral paintings directly on the walls of their huts. The Warli have developed an extremely basic pictography based on circles, triangles, and squares to express their animist culture and represent their only deity, the mother goddess Palghatta, at the centre of each painting. After losing his mother at a young age, Jivya Soma Mashe took refuge in drawing, immersing himself in a personal style that first elicited the admiration of his peers and later that of regional, national, and international authorities. Jivya Soma Mashe received his first national award in 1976 from Indira Gandhi herself. His works featured prominently in the Magiciens de la terre exhibition (Centre Pompidou, Paris 1989) and in the exhibition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Cartier Foundation (Paris 2014). Text in English and French. AUTHOR: Herve Perdriolle is an art critic and exhibition organiser. After co-ordinating the first show of the French Figuration Libre movement (Blanchard, Boisrond, Combas, Di Rosa, Viollet) in Paris (1981), he organised the first exhibitions of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring at Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1984). Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Bruno Sassarone reveals an abstract and radical Paris. Playing with the effects of light and shadow, his photographs offer a new vision, transforming the way we view the city. Paris a photographic book with the city as its theme takes an abstract approach to depicting the city, while retaining a direct relationship with reality. It is part of the tradition of modernist photography, but it distinguishes itself by the perfect appearance of digitally retouched images. Shadows play a key role in simplifying reality, dissociating locations from their classical visual representation. The economy of form thus created enables the depiction of Paris to be radically transformed, going beyond the customary descriptive task of photography. At first glance, the viewer perceives the overall contrast of the image, with only the light lines standing out against the shadows. As the eye gradually adapts, the details in the shadows become apparent, introducing a second way of reading the photograph and enriching the way it is perceived. Paris is thus viewed anew, moving from shadow to abstraction. Text in English and French. AUTHORS: Bruno Sassarone, born in 1975, lives and works in Paris. He holds a master's degree in law, but interrupted his legal career after winning Photo magazine's 2005 Canon Prize and the Front Cover Prize of the January/February 2006 issue. As a competition winner, his work was included in exhibitions in Paris, at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in 2008 (SFR Jeunes Talents), and in Saint-Tropez in 2019 (Fondation Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque). Studio Harcourt Paris held an exhibition featuring more than sixty of his photographs, in 2022. Aurore Clement is a French film and theatre actress. This book is put together like a jewel and contains a carefully chosen selection of around 100 West African combs from one of the world's largest and finest private collections of sub-Saharan African art. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Pont-Aven has lent its name to one of the most famous schools of painting in modern art and is now automatically associated with Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. In 1888, in this Breton village in southern Finistere, the two painters set about inventing the features of a completely new style of painting: Synthetism. Breaking with academic orthodoxy and heavily influenced by Japanese prints, they introduced novel aesthetic principles distinguished especially by a belief in simple forms and the use of colour applied in large patches edged by a dark line. This approach further distanced itself from the art that preceded it in its taste for matt tones and the rejection of traditional perspective. This new book reveals to a wider public the important collection that Alexandre Mouradian amassed in only a few years. The collection reflects its creator's great passion for the artists of the Pont-Aven group, as well as others in Brittany and beyond who embraced the new ideas of Bernard and Gauguin without ever losing their individuality. Whether in painting or printmaking, each of these was able to move beyond the imitation of observed reality to express the deepest aspect of his personality: his emotions. The works selected by the collector eloquently show the international reach of what was not strictly speaking a school, in the full sense of the term. Since the private Paris academies were closed during the summer, artists from all over Europe went to Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu to seek inspiration and 'to dare' like Gauguin. AUTHORS: Estelle Guille des Buttes obtained her diploma from the Institut National du Patrimoine in Paris and is Chief Curator of Pont-Aven Museum. Estelle Guille des Buttes is also the author of numerous articles and other publications on the Pont-Aven school. Adrien Goetz is a member of the Institute (Academy of Fine Arts), a former student of the ecole Normale Superieure, and holds an agregation in History and a PhD in the History of Art. 28 colour images Pont-Aven has lent its name to one of the most famous schools of painting in modern art and is now automatically associated with Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. This new book reveals to a wider public the important collection that Alexandre Mouradian amassed in only a few years. Although many societies in the Congo were once renowned for vibrant masquerades and architectural sculpture, these phenomena have only been studied as living traditions among a handful of peoples, most notably the Pende. Building on the extended fieldwork of numerous researchers since the 1950s, this text offers a unique window into the dynamic performance contexts of both masquerade and architecture in Central Africa. As much as possible, it privileges Pende voices and seeks to understand the inter-relationship between ritual practice and aesthetic form. Attentive to history, the text also shows these artistic practices have responded (sometimes unpredictably) to both colonial and post-colonial pressure. Lavish illustrations feature both iconic and hitherto unpublished masterworks, which have been selected to evoke the full range of Pende expression. AUTHOR: Zoe S. Strother is Associate Professor of African Art at Columbia University in New York. She studied History of Art at Yale University, where she earned a Ph.D. in 1992. Her research is based on thirty-two months of work in eastern Pende and central Pende. She has written extensively on Pende including Inventing Masks: Agency and History in the Art of the Central Pende which received the 'Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award'. 46 colour, 9 b/w images Building on the extended fieldwork of numerous researchers since the 1950s, this text offers a unique window into the dynamic performance contexts of both masquerade and architecture in Central Africa. The full-size plaster models that represented the passage from a preliminary designing phase to the production of the marble sculpture were of great significance to Italian sculptor Antonio Canova's creative process. As the subtitle emphasises, the temporal dimension holds great importance in the neoclassic sculptor's creative and productive phases: the plaster artefact posits a before and an after. Before comes the preparatory study; after is the finished work. Plaster stands in between, it is central. The plaster forms are not the finished works, however they contain all their power and potential. This volume explores this meaningful and little-known phase in the creative process of Antonio Canova, along with quality close-up photo sequences that expose the plaster surfaces, bringing a greater focus and appreciation to the plaster form. Vittorio Sgarbi (Ferrara 1952) is an art critic, the curator of exhibitions with international relevance, a refined collector, and the author of several popular volumes on the importance of culture and art. Among his most recent publications, Dall ombra alla luce. Da Caravaggio a Tiepolo; Dal mito alla favola bella. Da Canaletto a Boldini (La Nave di Teseo, 2019), instalments of the Treasures of Italy series. He is also a politician and an independent free thinker. SELLING POINTS: . Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Jaime Fernandes was born in 1899, in a small village, near one of the most unspoiled and rebellious rivers of Portugal, the River Ze^zere. He grew up in an idyllic rural landscape, a crossing site with a geography of fertile lands, where gold, wolfram, and tin were extracted from its entrails. A small rural landowner, he married and watched over his five children up to 38 years of age, when he entered Miguel Bombarda Lunatic Asylum in Lisbon, 300 km from his village. He is the most important Portuguese author of art invented in a psychiatric asylum context. About ninety drawings in ink, lead pencil, and ballpoint pen on paper, of varied sizes and quality, are known. His artistic activity, entirely lacking the supervision of any visual art atelier, was encouraged by his hospital psychiatrist, who collected most drawings by Jaime. The crudeness of these drawings impresses the unwitting observer: they are anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations - cattle, goats, elephants, fish, and birds. The human figures burst through as bodies are placed on hold, arms in the air, eyes wide open that observe, others, sometimes, appear merged with animals. Jaime practiced drawing and wrote lengthy semantically indecipherable texts, in a singular calligraphy, where time is set in long numbers. He did this solely motivated by the pure pleasure gained from this slow exercise of revisiting his memories. In that pleasure, he would have acquired a taste for the imaginary, the world of dreams and fantasies of creation, of being cherished by all who participated in the portraits that he gave us to observe. Jaime died in Lisbon in 1969. Text in English and French. AUTHORS: Joa~o Pedro Frois was born in Lisbon in 1957. University professor and researcher, he is currently a guest researcher at the School of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. He worked as a psychologist in the area of mental healthcare and rehabilitation of children and young people. He coordinated the Gulbenkian Programme on Aesthetic Research and Development and several research projects concerning Education in Art Museums, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Author and co-author of various books on education and the visual arts, two of which published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has published studies on the aesthetic theory of Lev S. Vygotsky, and translated two of his books. He regularly publishes in the area of the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and Visual Arts. He worked on the biography of Jaime Fernandes and studied his visual artwork for over a decade, which gave rise to several articles published in international journals. He was vice-chair of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics (IAEA). He is an affiliated researcher at the Center for Phenomenological Psychology and Aesthetics (CPPA) at the University of Copenhagen. Currently a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health (SPPSM). Michel Thevoz was a conservator at the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne from 1960 to 1975. Following his contacts with Jean Dubuffet, he initiated the creation of the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne (Switzerland), of which he assumed the direction from its foundation in 1976 until 2001. Professor of Art History and Museology at the University of Lausanne from 1977 to 2001, he published about 20 books. 100 colour illustrations Jaime Fernandes (1899) is the most important Portuguese author of art invented in a psychiatric asylum context.
