Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. Very rare, Very Good condition, minimal wear to spine, 96 pages, partially in colour. Limited edition. Around 2013, British artist Ryan Humphrey, working through a scene from Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, found himself instinctively casting Bart Simpson as Akira and Mil…house as the dying Takashi. He posted the pages online. Comics artist James Harvey saw them and proposed something considerably less reasonable: redraw every page of all six volumes of Akira, panel for panel, using the full cast of The Simpsons. It would require 768 artists, each contributing five pages in their own style against Otomo's original compositions. The project ran online between 2014 and 2015, free to all. This exhibition book is the manifestation in print of the project. Curated by Frans Boukas with design by Matt Deans, the soft cover comic gathers 80 pages from across the project alongside a 16-page full-colour gallery. Contributors range from Cameron Stewart, Erica Henderson, Jacob Chabot, Richie Pope to first-time comics artists. On the question of Otomo himself: a source close to the creator confirmed that he saw the project, laughed, and got on with his life. His son, the artist Shohei Otomo, loved it and was for a period actively interested in contributing to the project himself. Kodansha, the publisher and the rights holder on Akira, eventually communicated in writing that they could never formally endorse Bartkira but were aware of its existence. A printed book was permissible, with one condition: the pages could not appear in their original sequential order, which would constitute a direct reproduction of Akira and create a competing edition. Harvey accepted the condition. It's why the Exhibition Book is a curated selection rather than a readable volume. That the project directed its proceeds toward Otomo's own home region, still recovering from one of modern Japan's defining disasters, adds a layer of meaning that sits comfortably alongside Akira's own preoccupations.
