Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Al-Ghazali's Kitab adab al-'uzla (The Properties of Retreat) is the sixth book in the Rub' al-'adat (Quarter of Customary Practices) in his monumental work known as Ihya' 'ulum al-din (Revival of the Religious Sciences). Focusing on the issue of seclusion, or retreat from society, the main discussion in this book is the question of whether it is better to engage in social intercourse (al-mukhalata) or remove oneself from society to focus on perfecting one's relation to God. As he addresses this issue, al-Ghazali takes us through the numerous benefits and dangers of seclusion while laying out the rules to guide the one who chooses this option. He explains that although it depends on many factors, the most important is the person's intention and purpose for going into seclusion. If it is not done for the sole purpose of drawing near to God, seclusion becomes a harmful path of self-deceit. Although Kitab adab al-'uzla is premised on approaching the issue of spiritual fulfillment in the Islamic context, al-Ghazali presents to us his deep insight into the human condition that relates to Muslims and non- Muslims alike. This is perhaps one of the great appealing aspects of al-Ghazali, for he delves into the human psyche to explain the behavior of his fellow Muslims. As such, the reader is invited to embark on this journey through the heart and mind of a spiritual traveler.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Barks recalls that 'in June of 1976, Robert Bly gave me a writing assignment: He handed me a copy of A.J. Arberry's translations of Rumi's poems and he said, 'These poems need to be released from their cages' That 'releasing' has taken the form of several books: The Essential Rumi, Unseen Rain, Like This, The Big Red Book, and others. So those poems found a new freedom, a new sky to move in. Now this new 'Sky' for some Rumi poems. Rumi was a great master of the short poem. We should let our souls learn new ways of gliding and soaring in his exalted sky. Thank you, Robert.' What makes this collection of Rumi poems by Coleman Barks special and different from his previous volumes is its personal touch. Included are his own reflections on a selection of these poems. His explanation of how the title was chosen and the gratitude he expresses to all who have inspired him is touching.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Fools Friday is the story of one man's life as an educator, of the unique independent school he founded and led for twenty-six years, and of the hundreds of young adults who touched his life. In episodes ranging from senior pranks, counterfeiting rings, and the New Lunar Society to trauma and tragedy, Tom Pike explores the two qualities he found equally present in his teenaged students: the carnival spirit of Fools Friday and the essential Quaker belief that each of us has the sacred within us. In teenagers, he shows, both qualities are close to the surface and can burst forth at any moment. The goal of education, he argues, is to find a way to let this happen while initiating young adults into a world that forbids both. Fools Friday recounts moments when this worked and moments when it did not, learning as much from negotiating failure as from celebrating success. Fools Friday: An Educator's Journey shows how the often baffling, sometimes tragic, and always heartfelt choices made by teenagers in these crucial years come from this emerging sense of engagement with the world, and the different roles educators, parents, and peers can play in this process.…
