Paperback. Condizione: New. Plymouth is known world-wide because of the Pilgrim story and its considerable significance for the history of the United States. Visitors have made their own pilgrimages to Plymouth for hundreds of years to "see where it all began", gaze at Plymouth Rock, and visit Pilgrim Hall and Plimoth Plantation…. However, Plymouth isn't just the Pilgrims. It is a living community where residents still live on the site of the 1620 settlement as well as throughout the entire 103-square-mile township. The town evolved from a coastal fishing, farming and trading center to become a factory town attracting immigrants who followed the Pilgrims in a search for a better life, and has grown three-fold since 1950 to be a commuting and commercial community that hosts millions of visitors annually. Regrettably, images do not survive from the town's earliest history, but even photographs from the past century or so reveal a very different Plymouth - a Plymouth hard to imagine today. In Plymouth Then and Now, we focus on what has disappeared to compare that vanished landscape with the vibrant community of today.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Like the old soda fountain in the center of town or the local drive-in movie theater, diners evoke nostalgia and are a lasting symbol of the American dream. The hallmarks of the diner-good prices, quick service and comforting food in ample portions-create a melting pot of patrons. It is where friends…and neighbors come to meet, families share memories, and businessmen break bread with tradesmen. They are unpretentious; once you pass through the doors, the warmth and comfort of the diner draws you in and beckons you to stay for a while. Many have great affection for their favorite diner, their home away from home. Through the years, diners have gone through their ups and downs. They have gone in and out of fashion. Some are stylish and chic, while others are homey and traditional. No matter what they look like on the outside, each diner holds a special place in the hearts and memories of New Hampshire residents and visitors. So, let us treat you to a tour of these roadside eateries-to drink the joe, eat the pancakes and home fries, and talk with the counter crew. Your new favorite diner awaits.

Paperback. Condizione: New. From the Civil War to Iraq and Afghanistan, tens of millions of America's sons and daughters have worn a warrior's uniform, yet fewer than 3,500 have been recognized for "valor and intrepidity." Every state in the Union is formally accredited with at least one Medal of Honor recipient--America's highe…st award for bravery in combat. Florida Valor is a history that recognizes the military achievements and social events that played out in the lives of certain soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen before, during, or after their military service. In addition to the formal citations, Florida Valor reveals connections that might encourage the discovery of new relationships by readers. For example, few realize the supply of safe drinking water for Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Rider cruise to Cuba was protected in St. Petersburg by the "most injured soldier" of the Civil War--both men with a Florida connection and destine to be honored. Florida Valor is also a story of an exclusive club, whose living membership might one day reach zero, marking a time when society succeeds in ending war.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Monroe Through Time adds a contemporary dimension to Monroe's optics, revealing the landscape and the buildings as they present themselves today. Most of the graphic images showing what the community looks like now were captured by the intrepid and ubiquitous cameraman John Babina, a retired engineer…and the founder of Monroe's classical music radio station WMNR. His counterpart from yesteryear is the late Frederick P. Sherman, a teacher, horticulturist, town official and relentless captor of the community pictorially when life centered around the farm in the early 1900s and ensuing decades. Working with glass negatives in some instances, Sherman converted his black-and-white visuals into postcards which were sold commercially. Many of them were mailed with a Stepney Depot, Conn., postmark and a green, one-cent US postage stamp bearing the profile of Benjamin Franklin. Aerial specialist Bob Cargill and Stepney historian Joel Leneker also contributed images to Monroe Through Time and Babina added to his graphics as a tenacious interviewer and fact-collector.

Paperback. Condizione: New. "The Shawangunk Mountains -- The Gunks -- are renowned for stunning landscapes on and off the ridge in a region that has remained a favorite destination for visitors since the middle of the nineteenth century. While the mountain elevations are not high -- nowhere exceeding 2,240 feet -- they present r…ugged topography with glistening grey-white escarpments, jumbled boulders at the base of cliffs, deep crevices, as well as precipitation-fed "sky lakes." Arnold Guyot, the first Professor of Geology and Geography at Princeton University, remarked in 1887 that "Few spots on our continent unite so much beauty of scenery, both grand and lovely, within so small a compass, to be enjoyed with so much ease," a sentiment echoed by many today. Framing the Gunks are the valleys of the Rondout Creek and the Wallkill River where one finds New Paltz, which lays claim to being "one of the oldest towns in America" because of the stone houses aligned along Huguenot Street, as well as quaint hamlets like Gardiner, Rosendale,Accord, High Falls, and Marbletown. For the most part, these are lively, even cosmopolitan places, a mixture of old families and newcomers, many of whom arrived as second-homers from new York City."--Back cover.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Johnsonburg has made paper for over 125 years. It was, and is, surrounded by forests. Thus, timber, logging and forest products sustained the town. Located within the Pennsylvania Wilds region, Johnsonburg is a sportsman's paradise. It is also a railroad town, situated at the juncture of the East and…West Branches of the Clarion River; thus, bridges were important and so, unfortunately was flooding. Floods have plagued the town. In 1952, a flood control impoundment was built on the East Branch and has alleviated the frequent flooding. The Johnsonburg paper mill changed with the times, keeping the industrial process modern and providing employment throughout the years to local residents. Logs have funneled into the mill from near and far, and paper has flowed out to enlighten the nation. Paper from Johnsonburg entertained the readers of the Saturday Evening Post. Many of the early residents to the community were Italian-American immigrants. They have retained their ethnic identity and are proud of their heritage. Johnsonburg celebrated its bicentennial in 2010 with a large parade. They look forward to the next hundred years.

Paperback. Condizione: New. "There was a time when you could walk through Connecticut and find schoolhouses scattered across the landscape every few miles. In the mid-1800s, schoolhouses were located in districts so that a child would not have to walk more than two miles to school. The schools were literally everywhere: in the ro…ad, at the edge of the tobacco field, on top of a rocky hill, or next to the meeting house. Each schoolhouse was made for one teacher to "keep school" for all the neighborhood children aged 7-16. In 1852, there was a count of over 1600 schoolhouses. As the population changed, the school district borders changed, new schools were constructed, or old schools were moved to new locations. Now in the 21st century, you can still see old Connecticut schoolhousesand imagine what they would have been like in the old times. Connecticut is blessed with over a hundred renovated and restored schoolhouses which are open to the public thanks to the hard work of the communities and numerous historical societies" --.

Paperback. Condizione: New. The concept of New York City's "Midtown" has evolved a great deal since the first settlers arrived in the early seventeenth century. The center of town moved steadily north over the following centuries. Modern Midtown encompasses everything between 14th Street and 59th Street, and includes three of th…e city's major transportation hubs - Pennsylvania Station, Grand Central Station, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It features the city's finest shopping and entertainment, and most well-known skyscrapers?the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. Midtown also includes such landmarks as the United Nations, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the New York Public Library. The heart of midtown, between Lexington Avenue and Eighth Avenue, has changed the most over the last century, while to the east of Lexington and the west of Eighth, you can still find many original nineteenth century buildings. The writer O. Henry once said about New York City: "It'll be a great place if they ever finish it." Midtown Manhattan is a great place precisely because it is ever a work in progress, a dynamic and vital part of the city that offers a colorful and exciting mixture of old and new.
